To be fair, you pulled a total Koyabashi Maru on me and although your solution was valid going the route of a notional guitar is a bit of a cheat. After all, the intent of the question was more to get you to think about what you would do as a player if you had to choose but one of your instruments.
Also, I thought I posted this yesterday to your lunch report but must have pressed the wrong button.
My ultimate G&L would be a maple board/alder Legacy with locking tuners, dual fulcrum and triple humbuckers wired for coil tap and phase, etc. à la Jimmy Page.
If I could eliminate a piece of necessary gear, and I have, it would be the amp (for the sake of my ears). I find software sims do a very good job at creating the clear tones that are part of my tonal palette and a good set of in-ear monitors give me the tone and volume I require without having to move massive amounts of air.
No worries I accept your explanation too. I was joking around with the idea of getting snubbed.
Without an avatar the space taken by a shorter post does get lost in a thread. I have sometimes used black dots to add bulk to the post space. I like seeing member guitars in their avatars. I am going to get new pickguards for my guitars. Otherwise I would have taken pictures and made an avatar by now.
I responded to your LR with an ultimate guitar instead because I do not have a collection of guitars to whittle down to one. I only have two. I like one better but that doesn't count as whittling down.
So Jimmy Page has tapped humbuckers on his Les Paul? I admire his body of work but I have not dug into his gear.
I use software for simulated amplification also. My item to eliminate was
cables but I also had headphone wire in mind and anything else that keeps me immobile and can be tripped over or tangled up.
When you said "in-ear monitor" are you describing the things used by pros on stage or something more like earbuds? I would like to find a better solution than the Sennheiser HD580s I use. They are comfortable for headphones but they get uncomfortable eventually. I'd like to have an alternative.
