All My Guitars
I am new to the forum. I had made some post in the introduction forum. I am born and raised in Indiana. I am a die hard Pacer fan. I now live in New Mexico (NBA League Pass). I belong to a Pacer forum. That is my only forum experience and I have not posted much there. I will try and do my best to be a good forum user. I will be 40 years old in December and dont even own a cell phone. But here is my guitar collection. I have 6 rods, 2 spacers, and several screws in my spine. So I have to make sure my guitars are light. Thats why I have two semi hollow with no f-holes. They look like solid bodies but weight far less. I only like f-holes on certain kinds of guitars. ASAT's is not one that I like F-holes on. Chuck Berry style guitars? Yes give me F-Holes!
Lets start with the G&L Blues boy. Circa 1997 I believe. I took the neck off when I very first got it. I could be wrong about the year. It is semi hollow with no F-holes. The weight of this guitar is 4 and a half pounds even. It is my lightest guitar. And the lightest electric I have ever owned.
Sethlover in the neck and a 7 1/2 inch radius. It is a manly radius and adds to the vibe of the guitar for sure. My only guitar with such a radius. All the rest our 12. But I am very happy I own one guitar with a 7 1/2 inch radius. Major vibe

Re: All My Guitars
This is my 1999 G&L Legacy. The following year they put a guitar just like mine on the cover of the catalog. I have a Earvana compensated nut on this. I am a fan of the adjustble ones. But not a fan of the pre molded ones. I like to be able to adjust it. With the size of this nut I can set up the nut action they way I like. It also has enough room to round and curve the slot on the tuner side of the nut. This keeps the string friction low as the string goes back and forth. My intonation and tuning stability increased with this nut.

The Lace Sensor Hot Gold set. They sound amazing with the PTB system. I know the internet knocks the Lace stuff. But a lot of it is regurgitated info without any product experience. I roll the Treble off to 8 and the bass to 3 or 4. This really gives me a nice vintage quacky sound. I have only used Lace in a G&L so maybe the PTB system makes them better. But I have installed Lace in Fender strats for other guys and they loved them as well.

Re: All My Guitars
At the time I got this the orange neck was described as "Civil War Gun Tung Oil". They said Leo had gotten a supply of this at a auction I believe. I know they stuff today looks just like this. And maybe they still have the civil war stuff. But I just thought it was neat that it was from the Civil War.

Re: All My Guitars
This is my Midtown Custom. It is wired 50's style with Orange Drop Caps. I yanked out the crappy Burstbucker Alnico II's. I have Burstbucker Pro's alnico 5's in my Goldtop. Huge difference. Stock, this guitar would have been perfect for Metallica. No joke, stock it sounded like a Invader pu or something. I wanted vibe out of this guitar. So I yanked those out and installed
Dimarzio Eric Johnson humbuckers. WOW this guitar gushes vibe threw a tube amp. These pickups completely transformed the entire guitar. There is not a lot of info on those pick ups. If you guys have any questions about them just let me know.
This guitar has Ten Years After vibe thanks to the EJ humbuckers:
When these came out the pictures did not do the guitar justice. The finish work did not look as good as it does in person. I knew these selling at $1499.99 they would not last long. At out shop we got a email from Gibson. They said these guitars were eating into the Gibson es-335 Satin Model sales. The Satin ES-335 at the time was $2499.99 It was a no brainer for me to go for the Midtown Custom. I saved a grand and got the Split Diamond headstock and all the other custom appointments.

I dreamed about owning this guitar for a very long time. When I ordered it I had to have the matching headstock! This is my Will Ray ASAT

Re: All My Guitars
THis guitar is semi hollow with no f-holes. Same as my Bluesboy. But my Bluesboy is 4 and a half pounds even. This guitar wighs more for sure. I think the extra pickup adds at least 1 pound. Maybe a pound and a half? I think the metal adds weight as well. I would guess this weight to be 8 pounds maybe? My Goldtop is 7 pounds and this guitar is just a little more.
Mirrored Pickguard. The Will Ray Z-Coils. I really like these. I have had Z coils before, but I really did these. I dont have another Z coil to do a A/B. But from what I remember, the top end seems a little smoother on these. They seem warmer/darker. This is all from memory though. They are a little hotter.
But I love the sound of these pickups!

I dont know what that means. I understand over-wound. But I am not sure why they have extended length pole pieces. And I dont know what wider bobbin aperture means. The bridge pickup on the Will Ray Signature Model is over-wound with 1400 extra windings using extended length pole pieces for wider bobbin aperture.
But I love the sound of these pickups!

Re: All My Guitars
This is my Gibson Goldtop 50's tribute with Humbuckers. It is far from stock though. It came with a flat/satin finish. I knew it would wear very easy and fast. So I gigged with it a lot and let it wear naturally. But it happens so fast it looks like it has been toured for two decades. Then I used Minwax Tung Oil to gloss it up. That way I keep my wear and tear but it looks shiny for photos. I dont own a sprayer anymore. So I use tung oil and do it by hand.
The guitar looks more vintage now than when I bought it new. The way the tung oil looks it gives it a vintage vibe. It is hard to describe. it has a gloss to it but looks like the finish has been on for many years. I did the top of the guitar and the headstock.
Headstock: The tung oil really made the logo and signature pop. I only glossed the face of it. The picture doesnt do it justice. In person the tung oil really gave it some vibe. A imrpovement over the satin finish in my opinion. And it is SIMPLE to do.
I also added the adjustable Zero fret nut. I think it is amazing. To be able to pull out a allen wrench and dial in the nut action with precision is amazing. My guitar set up on this is incredible.
I glossed up the top with tung oil. It is hard to explain why I think it looks more vintage than the original finish. The pictures dont do it justice. The electronics and hardware are all from a 2015 Gibson Standard LP. Titanium bridge and stop piece. Burstbucker Pro's (They sound much better than the previous Burstbuckers IMO). It has push/pull pots for coil tapping and in/out of phase.

Re: All My Guitars
I re-fretted the guitar. I used a slightly larger wire. It was not as big as I wanted but I had it on hand. It was just a touch wider and taller. A lot of the new Gibsons are using smaller fretwire then they use to. Unless you go with a Custom LP, VOS, and a few other models. I prefer larger fret wire. For me, that is one thing that makes a "pro" guitar. I shaved the neck heel and contoured the back of the body. I rolled off the corner of the top of the heel as well. Not as much as i did the bottom corner. But just a tiny bit for comfort.
I also curved the body where the neck meets it and further down the body towards the cutaway. So when you play up there your hand wraps around it without feeling a edge. Makes it really cozy. Now it feels like it was just always this way. Like the guitar was always made this way. It just feels so natural to me now.
My ribs would be so sore after a gig. And even more sore the next day. I turn my guitar sometimes while I play. The edge of the body would stick in my ribs. So I did a "rib cut" on the body. I rolled the body where it touched my ribs. The heel and the body contour are hard to see in the pictures. But it gives you the idea. The rib cut (like the heel) just feels like it was always there. Very natural. I sanded off all the black on the back of the body so it would be one color. Down the road I might remove all the black (the neck and sides). But I would only really be doing that to impress other people. So I might just leave it as is.
I also have G&L style strap buttons. Why? Because G&L makes the best strap buttons.

Re: All My Guitars
Thats all of them. I hope you guys dig my geetars. I was not sure if I should add my Gibsons or not. But I figured most people here own more than just G&L. At one time (the late 90's) I bet I had a dozen G&L's. No joke, I was single and had a real kick ass job at the time. I figured I could have a massive drug problem or buy tons of gear. Because i sure aint going to save my money LOL. So I bought more gear then I would ever need.
Here are some live action picks of my guitars in action.

Hah yes! I just joined over there. I figured if I am going to join any forum I am gonna go all out. I doubt I will join any other forums. But G&L are my favorite guitars. Carvin are my favorite amps. So I thought what the heck. I'm going to join the forum for both.Fumble fingers wrote:awesome selection Jimmy !! ...... I'm pretty new to the whole forum thing. But I am really diggin it so far. For me, Carvin is the G&L of guitar amps. I have owned vintage Marshall and Fenders. I owned Mesa Boogies and some odd ball amps. My Carvin is the best live gigging amp I have ever owned. Every gig we play the soundman gushes about the tone. In the last 2 months I have had two different guitar players come up after the gig and take pictures of my amp with settings and my pedal board so they can duplicate the sound. That never happened with Marshall or Mesa.
Yea short scale is fun. I consider the ASAT the perfect scale length personally. But a LP is pretty fun live. Heritage build great guitars and they make you pay for it. I like that I can pick up a Gibson for a grand. PRS I just cant get past the scale length. It is just to strange for me. I am sure if I owned one and played it a lot I would get use to it over time. I guess I just like Les Pauls for short scale guitars.
It is great to see you over here as well bro.

G&L's and Carvin amps !! ...lol , I have a couple Carvins , V3m and VT50 head modified by Richard Hasselbrock aka Hasserl mod himself , have a Mesa MK V too , the little V3m hangs with it pretty darn good as far as my 3 channel amps , like them both along with my 1973 Twin Reverb and Peavey Classic 30 but the Carvins get the most play followed by the Mesa MK V and usually gig with the V3m , my VT50 head is probably the best clean channel I have ever heard when paired with my 2013 Legacy , those two go together like Peanut butter and Jelly , my Fallout sounds best with the V3m and MK V .....

Hey thanks man. I was a little worried about posting my Gibsons. But I thought "At least I dont have Fenders!" I am kidding of course. I have played the Fender EJ and think it is a nice guitar. I know guys like both G&L and Fender. But I figured Gibson is on the otherside of the spectrum of G&L. And I do enjoy the contrast of G&L/Gibson.tomanche wrote:Thanks for joining, Jimmy. Re: All My Guitars
Vintage Fender and Marshalls we always my thing. My brother (singer in my band) and I both were using Mesa Boogie for our band. For 7 straight years thats what we both played. But now, I get compliments at every single gig on how great the tone is. That never happened with the Boogie. My brother now wants to move to Carvin as well. You have a great collection of amps to go with your G&Ls.Fumble fingers wrote:G&L's and Carvin amps !! ...lol , I have a couple Carvins , V3m and VT50 head modified by Richard Hasselbrock aka Hasserl mod himself , have a Mesa MK V too , the little V3m hangs with it pretty darn good as far as my 3 channel amps , like them both along with my 1973 Twin Reverb and Peavey Classic 30 but the Carvins get the most play followed by the Mesa MK V and usually gig with the V3m , my VT50 head is probably the best clean channel I have ever heard when paired with my 2013 Legacy , those two go together like Peanut butter and Jelly , my Fallout sounds best with the V3m and MK V .....
For playing Rock n' Roll thought. The Carvin V16 paired with the Fulldrive FD3 is the secret of my tone. I guess it is not a secret though. I let guys take pictures of the amp setting and the pedal. But I love that! That tells me I have finally got "that" tone. And I did it with less money than ever before. I wish I had a good audio clip of the tone I am getting. I also have a "EQ" philosophy that I stick to live. My Bass player bought into it as well. So that really helps. When people see my EQ on my amp they ask "Did you have that same EQ while you were playing?". Sometimes they think I changed the EQ after we played.
Man lets find you a LP for short scale man. Lots of big bang LP's out there that sound great.

Welcome to the Forum Jimmy! Thanks for posting all the pics of your guitars. I too have an ASAT Classic semi-hollow with the F-hole deleted. I like how it looks like a solid body but is so light as you said. Mine weighs in around 6 lbs. It has a maple top painted black with the edge exposed as a wood binding. It's my avatar pic. And no worries about your love of Gibson Les Paul's; I have a 2012 Traditional that I ripped the guts out of and replaced with 500K pots wired 50's style, .015 PIO neck tone cap and .022 PIO bridge. I changed the pickups to SD Seth Lover's. Really love the tone of it now through my 5E3 clone that I built a few years ago. I'm just a basement amateur but I have fun chasing the tones in my head. I buy all my gear used or build it myself so I don't feel as guilty with my lack of talent.

Re: All My Guitars
That is a sharp ASAT my man. Congrats on the Traditional. Those are great Les Pauls. And I love Sethlovers. Gibson 490 (I know the internet hates those), Dimarzio EJ Humbucker, Sethlovers, Burstbucker Pro's, Pearly Gates, and GFS P180 are my favorite humbuckers. The GFS P180 is a total sleeper no one knows about. It is dirt cheap (40 bucks I think) and is the warmest pickup I have ever heard.Case24 wrote:Welcome to the Forum Jimmy!
I built my brother a Les Paul Jr. He loved the look of P90's but didnt like the sound. He wanted a humbucker. So I put a GFS p180 in it. Wired it 50's style. And dang, it sounds better than my Les Paul. It is hands down one of the best pickups I have ever heard. It blows my mind. I often think about routing out my LP just to install the P180.
edit: For the P180, just think "Start Me Up" tone but a little hotter.

Hope this comes off as a compliment, but you seem to me to have a Roy Buchanan vibe going on. Your action pics really remind me of him. Just need the beard & the relic tele to complete the image

Re: All My Guitars
Thanks Jimmy! I had a pair of Burstbucker Pros in a 2007 LP Standard that I sold a couple of years ago to a friend of mine. I really liked those pickups as well. Great sounding for classic rock with a nice edge to them I thought.JimmyJames wrote:That is a sharp ASAT my man. Re: All My Guitars
Sure I will take that as a compliment. I wasn't going for that vibe but I will take it. I had to cut my hair off. I will turn 40 in early December. My hairline has gotten thinner. I knew at a young age I would go bald. As a teenage I knew. My natural hairline was shaped like a horseshoe. But I had super thick hair back then. But I knew it was gonna go at some point. I figured if I made it to 30 with my hair I would be satisfied. 30 cam and my hairline was pretty good. It had thinned some but looked good. I figured if I made it to 35 I was doing good. That would be 5 years longer than I had hoped for.Nubs wrote:Hope this comes off as a compliment, but you seem to me to have a Roy Buchanan vibe going on. Your action pics really remind me of him. 35 came and it was a lot thinner than 30 was. My wife and friends thought I could still pull long hair off. I never wanted to be "that guy". The guitar player who is hanging on to his hair when he shouldn't. I cut it all off this year. I think it is to thin now. My wife thought I was borderline and might be able to keep it long a little longer. It worried me to much so I cut it off.
Loosing you hair as a guitar player is not fair. I got many more years then I had hoped for. So I guess I did alright. If I was a Golfer instead of a musician maybe I wouldn't care. It is the only thing I have vanity about. I am not ashamed to say so. Playing lead guitar in a rock-n-roll band looks cool with long hair.
My wife likes the barber undercut look on me. She also hates me when I have a beard (long anyway). So we compromise on the beard and I shave it all off when it starts to get long and I start over. But I really miss having long hair and a beard.

Re: All My Guitars
Thanks for the warm welcome. I was guessing on the Bluesboy year. It must be a 1999 then? I took the neck off when I first got it. I was going by memory but we know how that goes. But I know for sure it was late 90's on the neck. I cant guarantee the same for the body. I thought it was 90's as well. You seem to be in the know about this model more than me. You think maybe it is a 2000? I am gonna have to take the neck off again at some point to be for sure.Tim GuitarsOnTheWeb wrote:Hi and welcome aboard!
Cool guitars you have. Like your Will Ray, I've played several and just never was good enough to master the hipshot B-bender to be worthy enough to have one! But one of these days, I'll have to.
Bluesboy came out in 1999 as a limited edition in sunburst. It didn't make production run as a standard model until 2001. But if the neck says 1997, then it could be an older stamped neck, or someone took an ASAT Classic and at a later date added a humbucker. I'd have to see the route and what humbucker. Given the position of the humbucker, it looks like it's a production rum version as they humbucker was moved slightly from the 1999 version.
I love the way the Legacy has the nut & lace pickups looking like an EC or Strat Plus. PS: I never pay attention to what a lot of boards say about pickups or amps as I believe it's up to the individual's personal sound preference. Lace pickups seemed to work OK for Eric Clapton and since he's known for tone --- I'd say he trumps anyone saying those pickups aren't any good. I love the Fullerton red on it as well.
Did both Gibsons, however I admit to being a sucker for GoldTops. I always thought they just look cool.
Enjoy!
Tim
I am in no way talented enough to use a b bender. But I think they look cool. And I use to have one with a drop D switch and I miss that one a lot. I use it on a couple of songs and do a real simple bend with it. What I found is this. You dont have to be good with it at all! The crowd will go wild with a simple bend. I will play a little 2 or 3 note chord and use the b bender to go up a whole step. The crowd thinks this is guitar wizardry. It is amazing how simple you can use it and impress them.
Lace Sensor, it shocks me the stuff I have read online putting these pickups down. Then these people say the same thing in music stores. A month ago I heard a kid say "I hate Lace Sensor, they are to cold and steril for me". I said "Have you owned a set before?". He replied "No, but I have heard them or I think I played them once". I said "Oh what kind of guitar was it you played them in?". He replied "Oh I cant remember at all".
See what I mean? He can recall all kinds of stuff about the tone. But doesn't even remember when or what he played them in. you wanna bet a dollar he has never played them? And the comments he made was from stuff he has read online?
In the last 5 years I seen Buddy Guy, Jeff Beck and Pete Townsend play Lace in a guitar. I bet if Clapton didnt have such a big Fender deal we would see him break them out sometimes ass well. Steve Winwood used them when he played with Clapton as well.
I tell ya, the PTB system works great with the Lace pickups. Nice match for sure. Lace also got a bad wrap with the Fender Plus models. Players plugged them in and cranked all the knobs to 10. They did not know the Strat Plus had a TBX tone control. SO they were boosting so much high end and didnt know.

Re: All My Guitars
Is that the name of the site? Is it only for Lace owners? And if so, I dont know if I own enough Lace to join. I have always looked at forums but they always left a bad taste in my mouth. So I am still pretty new to being a forum "user". But this site and the Carvin amp forum seem to have real good guys. I also have not seen any crazy urban myths being passed of as science fact. Or people just trashing gear that they haven't even played.Fumble fingers wrote:the other guitar site I belong too talk Lace up !! .... and is a highly recommended pick up , never tried a set but wouldn't hesitate a second to use them
I think I should at least peak at this Lace forum though. If you say it is good that is enough for me.

Ah ok man. Do you think it is a forum I would enjoy? I don't want to sign up for to many forums. But maybe a forum that is not brand specific would be fun.Fumble fingers wrote:ultimate guitar .com , no affiliation with Lace

Re: All My Guitars
Hey thanks bro. you know at one point in my life I owned probably a dozen G&L's at one time along with some Gibsons. My collection is the smallest it has ever been. But out house was robbed a few years back. They stole everything. I tried real hard to make my collection small and precise. I feel very happy and lucky to own what I do.glvourot wrote:A little late to the party but those are some nice guitars you have there Jimmy. The Bluesboy is Honeyburst. I really love that guitar. And I love my Midtown. Both have major vibe to them
