Help Invader Plus, Legacy Deluxe, S-500?

Post by Salmon »

Hello all,

I am trying to figure out what model of guitar this guitar is. (I am not associated with the owner, just curious about the guitar). The owner received it in a trade and isn't certain. He was told it was a custom order not a standard configuration. The headstock does not have the model decal.

I am not aware of a "Tribute S-500" which is how the owner described it but this looks more like an Invader except for the three control knobs. The body binding makes S-type guitars look different to me which, given these pictures, makes it more difficult to distinguish. I am thinking Legacy Deluxe with options but the route for the HB-SC-HB is the obstacle.

I think the route for the Legacy's with a pickguard is different than the pickguardless Deluxes which are typically SC-SC-HB. It would require a special routing to produce a pickguardless HB-SC-HB Legacy. The only G&L model I have seen with the HB-SC-HB pickguardless configuration is an Invader. Again, they have only two control knobs, not three.

Can you order a Legacy Deluxe in an HB-SC-HB configuration?

Apparent upgrades to a Legacy Deluxe:
Ebony fretboard
Body binding
Quilted top
Matching headstock
HB-SC-HB configuration
EMG HB pickups
Semi-hollow (I read here that Dave said any model of Legacy could be done semi-hollow)

Apparent options from Invader Plus:
Ebony fretboard
Body binding
Quilted top
Matching headstock
EMG pickups
Semi-hollow
Dual Fulcrum Vibrato instead of Floyd Rose (?? looks like it is an option on the G&L webpage but Invaders shown on the website are routed for Floyd Roses??)

Guitar on eBay Note: I am wondering about the model not announcing the sale for people to take notice of so I posted in this section not the Public Announcement area. Moderators feel free to move it if deemed appropriate.

The auction text does not match this guitar in any way. :shocked028:
You might ask the seller what the serial number is (a picture of it would be helpful, too). I can then
run it by one of my contacts at G&L and see what the history of it is.

When I first saw it I thought it might be one of Gene Englehart's custom built instruments (he built in his garage). If the serial number turns out to be "CLF0" or
"CLF1" then it is one of Gene's custom builds. BTW, Gene was one of the long time master builders at the G&L factory until his passing in 2007. (RIP, my friend).

If you get the serial number post it here and I will contact G&L.

Not on the Tribute Series models, only the listed pickups in the Tribute Series spec pages shown on the main G&L website.

That's a cool looking G&L. Sleek .
I'm curious when the natural wood 'bindings' started to appear in the G&L timeline.
It seems this might be an early example .

The seller must be re-using an old auction posting. :BadIdea:

As I said in my earlier reply: "The auction text does not match this guitar in any way."

If I had a eBay account (got rid of it after it was hacked years ago), I would flag this auction.

buyer beware, especially on auctions such as these. :searching:

Note to OP: I'm still waiting to hear from Dave on this guitar-stay tuned.

I've heard back from Dave about this guitar:
Hi Craig,

We have no record of that guitar. Maybe it was built by an employee but the reason is unknown. Nobody here now knows of it. It appears to be based on a Legacy Deluxe using part of the CNC code to make a Legacy Semihollow.

We do not offer such a configuration nor do I anticipate we will.

Thanks, Craig.
