NLB100D

Post by blargfromouterspace »

This came today. It got built very quickly - I ordered it on May 21st, and the completion date on the certificate is June 18th - a month ago?!? I wonder why it took so long to get from the factory to the dealer? Anyway, doesn’t matter its here now, pics!

The finish is satin frost on Fullerton Red. I had a feeling that the vintagey colours would look cool with this finish so took a chance and ordered one. I hadn’t seen a satin frost finish on a non-metallic colour, but it came out looking and feeling exactly like I wanted it to. Matte, and super tactile. Seems thinner than usual too. Strangely, the girlfriend doesn’t like it one bit, I thought that being red it would have girl appeal. The purchase of this instrument caused a major poop-storm, so that probably has something to do with it. I don’t want to go through that again so this will have to be my last major purchase for a while…

I'm not a bass player, so can't really comment on how it compares to other stuff on the market, but it plays very nicely and sounds fantastic through my 100W Twin clone with a locally made 410 cab. It's lightweight, 8.97lbs. This one has a quarter-sawn, #8 (J-type) neck. The rosewood on the fingerboard is a very nice, dark piece.

Marvelous pieces of hardware. Surely it doesn’t get much better than what’s on this.

Congratulations ! That satin frost looks cool, I'm glad your attempt with the color turned better than with the SC2.

To prevent this type of storm, I promised to keep the total number of guitars to 3 (I haven't a lot a space anyway) before purchasing my S-500 prototype. So I'm down to sell one I got if I want a new one. That seemed to work pretty well with the chief of staff :D

Hey Jamie,

Great choice on the LB-1. It looks amazing

I have tried as hard as I can to avoid said "poop-storms" by telling the old lady it would be 1 a year from now on. Man I hope the le-2 doesn't get shipped til the new year

So far the argument that gig money gets reinvested back into gear has helped me avoid a lot of grief!

I also feel that you will need to update your avatar pic soon.... You have a great collection of instruments.

Yep Jamie, that is a keeper. Very nice, clean look. I have never seen a frost finish.--Darwin

Calendar or financial year? I have the same policy of using gig money to buy stuff. This one was no exception, my mistake was buying it so close to the SC2 :x I'll take a family shot one day soon, its such an effort to get them all out of their cases and set them in position now though, I need to get a wall like yourself and Darwin have.

Xavier - Surely 3 isn't enough!!!

Darwin - The satin frost feels totally different to the usual gloss finish. I really like it

For sure my friend, but the price of real estate has gone so high that we had to move in the suburbs of Paris where the price is only 5500€/sqm ,
as a result we live in a 55 sqm flat, which is very nice but .... a second child is programmed to land at the end of september, I had to make compromise :D

Jamie,

Congrats on the LB-100. It has a very classic look. I can't wait to hear one of these in person.

Jamie,

You have to know I'm grinning ear to ear reading this thread. Another one has fallen for G&L up to the extend that they start buying basses if they are guitar players and vice versa if they're bass players. You got the bug my friend ... ;-)

Congrats on a beatiful looking instrument. It has a lot of the classic pre-BBE look with the control plate/pickguard and front mounted jack. Have fun venturing into low-enders land!

That is a sweet, sweet looking bass Jamie.

Then again, I have always been a red man. But the satin finish looks superb IMO.

Fine choice!

Jos - Damn straight I've got the bug! It feels like there's a collection of these fine instruments now.

Phil - I'm fond of red too. When I was looking at pictures of basses trying to finalise the finish I wanted I was finding that whenever I saw this particular combination of colours I'd go "phwoaaar". Fullerton Red is a real party red, and the satin seems to make it even more so.

Ken - Sounds like a good P-bass - growly. There's a lot of very usable tones to be had by playing around with the tone and volume knobs too. I'll be putting a set of flats on it as per your suggestion some time in the next couple of weeks, that ought to mellow it out a little. And I'm getting what sounds to me like a great sound with a guitar amp, I see no need for a dedicated bass amp just yet. Whether a seasoned bass player would like the sound is another thing, but it sounds mighty in my practice room.

My #1 bass amp for thirty years now has been a "guitar" amp (an '82 Fender Bassman Ten). I know I'm missing a little bit of the very bottom end by using four 10s, but I'm happy with the tradeoff it gives me in the mid-range - especially when the tubes start to compress. My backups are GK MB-150s (actually they are my upright bass amps, but they're also great on electric). The MB150s have been around since the early 80s, and at least in the US they are very reasonably priced on the used market.

I was playing the L-1000 a couple of nights ago, and continue to be impressed with the LaBella Deep Talkin' flats I put on over a year ago. They are a slight step up in price over the cheapest brands, but a huge step up in tone and feel.

Great strings ! Still far from the cost of new Double bass sets, I know you know.

I love the black tapewounds (La Bella). especially if my muscles and tendons are in need of some R&R.
Little tension...they almost feel like a rubberb, and almost no friction. And all that wouldn't mean a thing if they didn't sound stellar.
( and they are black 8-) ! )

I have yet to try Pyramid flats, some swear by them.

I haven't tried the Pyramids or La Bella tapewounds. I believe the set that came on my fretless Warwick are TI Jazz Flats. Those are some seriously amazing strings, but at $80 a set they'd better be!

I do need to shop for some tapewounds. A set came on my SB-1 back in '99, and already seemed pretty worn back then. The E string bit the dust last winter. I put on a set of cheapo round wounds, but I really need to get back to tapewounds on that bass. The set that was on there had a sort of a spiral running under the wrappings. I haven't been able to figure out which brand they were, or if they are even still in production. I guess I'll give the La Bellas a shot...

II think I paid about $60 for the LaBella Tapewounds...they don't age or oxidize as far as I can tell(so the more
you play...the less it costs per note :?: )

I swear mine are almost ten years old and they sound as good as ever.
I have them on an active homemade neckthrough bass at the moment .
They still have a touch of mid-highs for definition, like regular flats.
Enough to catch just the right amount of picking finger (or pick ) 'noise' .
They sure hold down the bottom...big ,warm and round .

I hope this info/porn is good for you too Blarg so this doesn't seem like a hijack

I found a couple shots when the tapewounds were on the Musicman (forgive me Leo).

These have that 'spiral under a wrap' thing going on;

just so you know...I'm not a bassist first ...but I own a bunch now with no regrets.
(no girlfriends atm either...that might have stopped my GAS in it's tracks if someone else had their say .)

Not at all, go for it. It is good info - so is the thing with tapewounds that they last longer? Do they sound very different?

Quick answer:
Think of classical nylon strings on a larger scale, the feel is smooth and inviting, as is the sound .

Long Answer:
Let's see if I can make a few soundclips ...That might be better than words.
(adds this to the list of things to do tonight)
