Two more GirL& - Asat and Legacy

Post by jediguitarist »

Wanted to post the first G&Ls I bought back in 95. An Asat and Legacy both in what I assume is Cherry Burst.

The photos aren't as great as I would like. I wanted to bring them outside under my canopied deck but it was already 90 degrees here in NJ.

Yup, that is the original plastic... again. I use this mainly for weddings since I don't have a jazz box for cocktail hour.
It says ASAT on the headstock. I thought it might be an Asat Classic. I'll have to check the G&L site.

I managed to scrape off most of the original plastic about a year ago. It was starting to peel during gigs. :searching:
This Legacy is one of the three main gigging guitars that gets brought out for clubs and bars. Only dropped about 5 times but it was in the gig bag for most of them. :shocked028:
Maybe it's me but guitars are meant to be played and even though I'm careful, some things can't stay perfect all the time.
No major dings but getting close to a fret job.

Hmm? ;)

This is not an ASAT Classic. Classics do have MFD pickups in size of them used for a Fender Telecaster.

Maybe I'm right, if I say it isn't an ASAT Special either, but just an ASAT, which became the Special some time later, but with different finish for the hardware.

I think, that plastic is supposed to be removed, as soon as you get the guitar into your hands.

Miles, I checked the G&L website. It looks it's an Asat Special, but I think you're right about it being an Asat. I'll have to dig around and see when they started putting changed to the Asat Special.

See Production List of G&L Instruments (USA) and List of Regular Production ASAT-style guitars (USA).

Hope this helps.

Oh, and yes, both of these guitars have the Cherryburst finish.

Thanks for posting them!

Jedi,

As others have said, it's not an ASAT Classic. The pickup configuration on the Classics is just like a standard Tele, except with MFDs. Also, the headstock would say "ASAT Classic".

Your ASAT could be from the late 80s or the early 90s, based on the pickguard and black hardware. It would be easy to tell the age within a couple of years (or possibly within months) from the headstock. If you can post a photo of the front of the headstock, I'm sure either Jos or I could identify it for you.

I just took a closer look at the photo of the ASAT. I hadn't noticed the three-ply pickguard before. That places your ASAT no earlier than 1992.

BTW, the whole ASAT/ASAT Special thing is just a difference in cosmetics. ASATs had black hardware and a black pickguard, while ASAT Specials had chrome and white. Otherwise, they were the same guitar.

why do you leave the plastic on the pg? it is not meant to stay on there, it becomes almost impossible to take off after many years, and it can permanently damage the pickguard when left on.

Nice guits! 8-) Now be a good boy, and take the plastic off of the ASAT's pickguard. :) That stuff gets yucky over time, and is a bear to get off, when it's older.

Sweet Asat, Miles!!! :shocked003:

Here's some photos of the Asat neck and body cavity...
I'll have to take a shot of the headstock, but it says ASAT.

Mainly because I was a dumb 20 year old when I bought them. Didn't think much of it until about a decade later when I noticed my Legacy starting to peel. When I tried to finish the job, it wouldn't come off the way I would have liked... :confused0077:

I left the plastic on the Asat and S-500 hoping no one would notice... :whome:

Ever since I found my Cherryburst L-2000 I've had a thing for 'em in all incarnations.

Miles, you could start a porn thread for that ASAT, I wouldn't mind :D

It came out of the factory like a sibling of yours. The 3rd pickup has been added by the previous owner. :)
