Fri 13 friggatriskaidekaphobia Lunch Report
Thanks all for the feedback and responses. It's been a fun week for me. Hope you enjoyed it too. Next week's reporter will be Elemeno P. He's just recently returned from the campaign trail as a speech writer for Herman Cain. Or maybe I'm confusing him with someone else. Either way, be sure to tune in next week for another exciting installment of G&L Lunch Reports.
Lunch - I have today off after working 8 straight days. So today is going to include a lot of rest and recuperation to get over the cold I've been nursing the past couple of days. I'm improving already. Perhaps a bit more soup with some crushed red pepper and garlic to clear my head. I have the house to myself so I'll probably read a bit and watch a stupid movie that the girls would hate. Maybe even play a little guitar.
G&L - your signature model G&L - sure its a nice dream but what if BBE lets you design a model to your specifications. Whats it gonna be? If you are so inclined post a photoshop mock-up of your design. Otherwise give me a good description.
Here's mine: I'd start with a Bluesboy and then make some relatively minor but all important changes. Make it with rear mounted controls so I don't have to deal with the distracting and unattractive control plate on the front. Then the most important change - put a saddle lock bridge on it. Of course it would have black hardware. I'd probably order the first one semi-hollow with an f-hole in honeyburst or old-school tobacco burst. I've even got a catchy name: The ASAT Bluesman cuz its what the Bluesboy aspires to be when it grows up. If BBE wants to use my idea I want even charge them for it. If they want to send me a prototype just email me and I'll give them a shipping address. Here's a quick and dirty photoshop to give you a visual.
Non-G&L - There's an app for that. There's about a million and 1 music related iphone apps out there. I've seen several guitar simulators but never tried any of them. I've heard good reviews on some of the tuner apps available but I've got tuners already so I haven't bought any of those yet. An app I did try was Bebot a funky little synth type app. Quirky and cool. Check out Jordan Rudess of Dream Theatre giving a little demo of it. If you've got any worthy music related apps let me know, won't you?

more Non-G&L I've learned more than just guitar info on this forum. Now I don't remember who it was but someone on this page mentioned cooking a trash can turkey a few months ago. I finally got a chance to try it over New Years. Highly recommended. Its quick, easy, and made one the best tasting turkeys I've ever had. Basically you drive a stake in the ground, hang a turkey on it, cover it with a (clean) trash can, put hot coals around and on top of the can, drink a beer and wait. In 2 hours you'll have 1 of the best turkeys you ever ate. Check the web for details. You won't be sorry.
that's all folks, thanks again for reading and writing,
Jeff

Re: Fri 13 friggatriskaidekaphobia Lunch Report
Thank you for the interesting and entertaining week Jeff. Lunch will be something different today as I am out of leftover pizza. Good to hear your are on the mend.
You get an A+ from me as a guitar designer. You pretty much picked my guitar. Only difference in mine would be no pickguard and possible a DF instead of a saddlelock. I would even go with the color you have picked. If G&L sends you a prototype you could pass it around the forum for complete testing.
My phone is very basic, no texting, just receive and send calls. When I retired from the computer business I checked out from technology other than my recording gear. I have seen people talk about free tuner apps but a Snark is next to nothing cost wise and it works under almost any conditions of light, noise or whatever. I have two strobe tuners and only use them while doing setups. Weather apps don't do much for me either as I can still see out the window. Boy, there is something to be said about retirement. You can crawl in a hole and just look out once in a while! -- Great week Jeff and thanks for straightening me out as to where you live-- Darwin

Re: Fri 13 friggatriskaidekaphobia Lunch Report
Great Week Jeff, very enjoyable.
Lunch was a salad, boring but its january.
5 inches of snow this morning, howling winds. Its a doozy.
Love your bluesboy, would love the saddle lock bridge on a legacy as well. Still want a black one for my special.
I have about 10-20 guitar related apps on my iphone but dont really use them. While I am a technology guy and like to stay up with it all, I have resisted buying an ipad. Its been tough because I know I would really use if, but havent so far. I'm going to get the ipad3 in march when its out. Hopefully then the apps will make more sense to use and find out which one's are best.
I deep fried a turkey for Xmas, first time. A bit dangerous when the bird goes in but it was the best I have had, wonderful. I see you can get the oil less turkey fryers now, I have seen them in florida. MAYBE.

Great fun this Jeff thanks.
friggatriskaidekaphobia not me. (I did look it up though)
Trash can turkey sounds interesting. I have done the deep fried turkey and a beer can chicken but the trash can is a new approach. We will all be there this weekend for repoman trash can cooking lesson, with pickin' and grinnin' in the background.
My signature is an everchanging beast. Would be some kind of ASAT Studio VI creation. Imagine a Commanche Studio VI crossed with a Will Ray ASAT Z3 (love the overwound bridge p-up), no f hole SH maple body, cherryburst with matching headstock, #1 ebony neck, possibly with triple binding, a DFS instead of B Bender, black crinkle hardware, locking tuners, expander, clear pickguard, and flame throwing capability from the nipple!

Re: Fri 13 friggatriskaidekaphobia Lunch Report
I am not superstitious so it is just mildly interesting when the 13th falls on a Friday.
I like your prototype. I would leave off the f-hole. I'd like the pickguard to be removable without a trace so I would sometimes have it on and other times not between string changes. With the cherry burst you have to have either a quilted or flamed maple cap unless you are lucky to get an interesting enough piece of ash. The quilted or flamed cap really shows off that finish. Make that a #1 birdseye neck in natural satin. Move the Seth Lover to the middle position and put a standard ASAT MFD in the neck position. "Standard" with the exception that mine are the ultimate in noiseless pickups. They sound exactly like noisy pickups but with no noise, only perfect tone. Electronics on the back like yours with two expander push-push knobs. I always wondered why the Tele style controls have stuck around for so long as they seem outdated yet they have grown on me. However, I would take it without if it were optional. Maple binding on that finish scheme would look nice or no binding. I would like one with chrome hardware and one just like it but with black hardware.........if my ideal guitar can be twins? Change this to triplets except the odd third would be tri-burst/ebony fretboard/white binding on body (front & back) and the neck. (third very close to, member, jonc's ASAT) Also locking tuners.
Lunch was half an olallie berry pie. Yes half the pie and I have eaten an entire pie in a single meal a few times. I am an ex-pie addict and have jumped off the wagon. I worked half a day today and am now officially on vacation for the next week. I have an immediate manager who always manages to give you a feeling before you leave that ruins your vacation.........truly a sneaky miserable human being. I am drowning the pain in pie as I write this.
I have a basic cell phone. I only figured out how to retrieve text messages a few weeks ago. I had maxed out the mailbox and kept getting alarms to make room for some floating in the cosmos. I had no idea people I knew were sending me text messages. I thought it was all going to be junk mail from the phone company. I do not like to talk over the phone so it is used minimally and I only pay about $15-$25 per month. Just amazes me how much people spend annually to have unlimited cell phones and cable television. With that money you could build these signature guitars even if it required sending the hardware out to have it done in black. My $.02 contribution.
Another nice week of LRs.

Signature model... I pined on and on for years on the G&LDP about a reissue SC-2 and it eventually happened. So, I got mine!
Thanks for the Bebot vid! I bought it immediately, and it is indeed VERY cool!
I highly recommend the iStroboSoft (Peterson strobe tuner) app. It's as accurate as my $200 StroboStomp II pedal, so it's well worth the $10 price of admission.

Great Reports!
Lunch- wife and I went to a Middle Eastern Buffet.
Great food.
G&L I wish they would come back out with a ASATIII
App time..... I don't have a iPhone the wife does I have a tuner and a amp app on her phone.
I have a iPad I have a iRig adaptor, too many apps to count. even a 8 track recorder!
I have gotten caught up in the Apple thang.... I hook my guitar to the iPad to practice. decent sound can work tones some times better than live rig.
No matter how many apps I can get it does not make up for playing through a amp. IMO its a great practice tool.

Jag,
when I first loaded guitar apps on my iPad I played with it for days.
Most apps are free. you don't get all the features with the free apps but you have enough to get a decent sound.
$40.00 for the iRig adapter.
The only app I have paid for is the tab app. I can pull up 1000's of songs.
Technology has passed me by.

So far have you found that the tabs are accurate? I don't have the app, generally speaking, sometimes I see tabs that are more or less loosely based on the notes of a song.cmguitar wrote:Jag,

i don't understand the fascination with tabs. one of the best learning tools is trying to figure out songs. it blows my mind when on youtube videos, on simple songs where you can even see the player's hands, comment after comment asking "you got tabs for that?" just don't get it. as you said it, most tabs are grossly inaccurate, and even when the notes may be right, the fingerings are horrible, often unplayable.Michael-GnL-Michael wrote:So far have you found that the tabs are accurate? tabs are not technology. they have been around for a long time. it is a tool that can be useful i the beginning when teaching people, and it was a tool that was very useful before recordings were available, although standard music notation is much more useful, i am curious why people don't want to use that, just tabs.cmguitar wrote:Louis,

I know what you mean about people asking for tabs. They can be helpful when you cannot figure something out as long as they were accurate. YT videos are often vastly superior to any tab. Musical notation requires too much mental application for the give-me take-it youth of today's world. They want it all perfect, free and easy.

Michael,
I was working up Cream Strange Brew a few months ago.
Not my favorite Clapton/Cream song but i had a project I was doing that needed it.
I worked it up mainly on my own but I did compare with the tab.
The tab was a little off from the song skipped notes ect...
I mainly work music up from ear. I use tabs and sheet music as reference.
iPad apps and half accurate tabs are good tools.
I still catch myself running back songs over and over till I get it right.
Only diffrence is instead of sitting with a guitar and a casatte recorder running songs back for hours. i am now sitting with a guitar hooked up to a iPad using a song loop app running back songs for hours.
I use YT also when i am working on songs.
Same thing i was doing 30 years ago only some of the tools have changed.

A couple of weeks ago Dean showed me an app he's got on his Mac laptop.
It's called irehearse and here is a link to it: irehearse.
I have not had time to try it out myself, but I definitely liked what I saw.

that program actually looks really good. nothing a daw already can't do, but certainly puts it all under your fingertips.Craig wrote:A couple of weeks ago Dean showed me an app he's got on his Mac laptop.
