LR Monday 12/12
Hey guys. It’s been a while since I had LR duty, thanks to the all-powerful Craig for the nomination. For those who don't know me, my name is Jamie. I'm a student of Electrical Engineering at RMIT in Melbourne, Australia. I plat in a couple of bands - the links are in my signature, check them out if you're at all interested. Because I'm in Australia lunch reports this week will be appearing early as relative to you guys in the USA, it’s already tomorrow here.
Lunch today was a bowl of Vietnamese rice noodle soup with rare sliced beef in it. I think it’s healthy - it seems relatively fat free and I always feel good after it, but it also tastes so damn good that it can't be healthy. We’ve had two Vietnamese restaurants open in my suburbs high street, called High Street, in the last two weeks bringing the number of Vietnamese restaurants on the street to three, and the number of good ones up from zero to one.
G&L: On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being not at all and 10 being 'my credit card is out right now', how bad do YOU want an SC-2? I reckon I’m around an 9.5. Whenever I see Gitman's sparkly blue one I go weak at the knees.
Music projects.
Who has music projects on?
Last night a friend of mine made the suggestion that we make a Hoagy Carmichael tribute album. I mentioned Hoagy when I first did the LR last year, so the timing is pretty creepy. I’ve spent the day working on a lap steel arrangement of the melody to ‘Stardust’, and it’s taking a long time but I think it’ll sound nice enough when it’s done. Here’s a perfectly matured interpretation of the song for those who may not know it, this version has the seldom recorded introductory passage.

Perpetual Earworms
I’m going to add one of these each day this week. These songs have been in my memory for as long as I can remember, they got in when I was a child and have been with me ever since. They aren't the irritating kind, to me anyway - I'm sure, in fact I hope, that some of you will be cursing me if you choose to listen. You'll notice a definite mid-late '80s theme here, that's the time when I first remember having what I'd now call an interest in music. I was born in '82, so bear that in mind before you judge me too harshly!
This first one is one that I must have heard very early in my life. I’d only ever heard it every couple of years, if that, and only this year I learned who it was performed by and what it was called. I reckon it's one of the best bittersweet melodies ever conceived and brings me to the verge of tears every time I hear it.

Enjoy your day, gents!

Re: LR Monday 12/12
.
The next two weeks are the busiest days of the year for me so I may not be around much. I doubt I'll be around a computer to post on Monday for my lunch or dinner. Lunch (will probably be) sweet & sour pork and chicken from the market in town. Does anyone know how to make good sweet & sour sauce? The only thing I have found on the shelf is a dipping sauce but that is sort of candy-like compared to good sauce from a restaurant. This market hires Chinese chefs to prepare the Chinese portion of their buffet. Everything there is excellent but it is all $8 per pound from lettuce to potato casserole.
There is a Chinese restaurant I used to go to routinely that had the most flavorful hot & sour soup. It surely must have been unhealthy to taste that good.
I have tried a couple of Vietnamese restaurants. Some have a French overtone because of the colonization influence. It has been years and I recall both were good but I did not like the digestive tract being left in the shrimp at one of them.
G&L: It would be a 1 for me. I don't have room for an SC-2. I can only see having a few guitars and after the two I have already comes a Les Paul and a PRS. A Bluesboy would come before any other G&L model.
I guess you could say a music project I am currently working is redeveloping my chops after a long layoff.
Stardust is a song that could be pulled off in different genres.
I have heard of the Weather Girls but I am unfamiliar with this song. Is the guy famous or just an actor for the video?

On a scale of 1-10 for the SC-2 I would probably be at a 6.5, I wouldn't turn one down if it came my way and I would love to have something with a trem on it but lately I have been more seduced by the allure of the more S-type G&Ls as I already have soapbar MFDs at my disposal.
But that bridge PuP is so tempting mmhhmm and it would look real nice in natural or even greenburst....
No real music projects for me at the moment but practice, practice, practice

Re: LR Monday 12/12
same for me, not gas'ing an SC-2, I have an ASAT special and that's good for me.
I am gas'ing for this, sorry its not a G&L
http://www.jerrysleftyguitars.com/herit ... lefty.html
I was at the shop and played this guitar, wow............
As far as G&L's go, I would like an S-500 and an ASAT Deluxe (dual humbucker) and maybe, just maybe a Z-3.
My only music project is a commitment to my guitar teacher that I'll get more focused and practice more. He has me learning "The Duke" by Dave Brubeck. This week the melody, next week the jazz chords. I keep thinking how good it would sound on that prospect, lol.

Lunch today will be left over Chinese food from last night.
I got my SC-2 in April. I watched a couple of demos and that was it. It was definitley a "10" on the meter. I think these guitars are seriously underated.
As far as music projects go, I play bass in a band. We have been playing our own songs and are trying to decide on a couple of covers. Our goal is have about 12 in the bag before we consider playing some shows. Its always fun.

Hey Jamie,
Just a quick reply as i am between students at school.......
My SC-2 gas shot to 11 when the line got opened up to all the options. It makes me smile everytime i walk past...
I am just finishing up a recording project with some buddies of mine, when i get home i will try and learn how to post mp3's for you all to check out.
And glvourot's SC-2 in tabacco is pushing the sc-2 gas to the top of the scale again!!!!

Re: LR Monday 12/12
Late start to the day, so no lunch yet. Breakfast was peanut butter on 12 grain bread and a side of chunky salsa with grated cheddar.
I have an SC-2 GAS quotient of 0. My next guitar will either be a T-style (ASAT or CV Squier) or one of those 50s Tribute Les Pauls and in all honesty, I could probably either upgrade the pups and hardware on my current Squier and the Sonex 180 and get the results that I want without adding any more guitars.
I'm looking at starting a band in the next few months, but I have to clear my plate of a couple of long term projects first and I have to do some more work on my playing. The Squier Tele has really opened me up to more rhythm playing.

No love for the SC2 either. I don't hate em and would definately use it if I had it but wouldn't get one on purpose...
(meaning I 'd take one in a too good to pass up situation)

Hey Jamie,
SC-2, maybe about a 5-6. Could go either way.
Current project, well I am trying to get a feel for reamping, you may recall the tune I did earlier this year, well I extended it, improved the arrangement, etc, and currently have everything tracked, DRY, as in DI from a Radial J-48. I am playing with tones now and sending the signal back around the pipe to my amp, and capturing that. This time my drummer friend put together the drum track, which is pretty interesting, him being a jazzer (his style is very different from what I am used to). Then comes the every grueling mix stage, and all that jazz. Permitting I can get all the tones going great, it is going to sound very good. Otherwise I'll be forced to re-record everything, and as I double tracked every guitar part (8 minute song, 2 guitars (rhythm and lead voice), you do the math on how long this took me overall).
We did a Hoagy meddley in high school band, it had some ramming sections on the tenor sax, including playing that the top of the register (which uses some odd side keys) for heart and soul.
In other news, I defended my thesis today for those who didn't catch the other thread. Only need to revise and submit to complete.

Re: LR Monday 12/12
Jamie, thanks for the early reports for us this week! Lunch was leftover pork loin and vegies from the weekend.
About 4 months ago, when I walked into AG&B and saw the Fullerton Red SC-2 with the DF and GOT all maple neck, and like Nigel, the dial immediately went up to 11. Sweet it is and it is light and fits so well and it is also a looker. I may look at a sparkle of some kind in the future.
I plan to do a music CD project this winter of our current group. The was a promoter of tribute bands that watched us this weekend and wanted to hire two of our group immediately. It is always a struggle to keep everyone together but I think our band will have priority. Time will tell. In this business, nothing lasts forever.
There are some and every time we do Buck Owens Buckaroo, it sticks in my mind for days. This happens to me all the time that I will hear an older song and can't get it out of my mind for a couple of days. I wish some other things would stick like that.-- Darwin

Re: LR Monday 12/12
I like to sample a G&L with 2 big MFD pickups, I guess either a Special or an SC-2. Since I have never played either I can't possibly say which I would like better. I don't have enough GAS to go and seek these out to try.
The Weather Girls' song is very good. I think you said it is a song from the 80s but it has a late 50s kind of feel to me. I like it.
My Earworms are songs that I never get tired of hearing. In fact, most time when one of these comes to my mind I'd put it on listen to it on repeat. Some examples are:

An obscure song by the Silencers called A Letter From St. Paul. I take it that it counts as obscure since I can't even find a Youtube video for the song.

Hey sirmy, congratulations on the defense of your Thesis. What did they think, and how do you feel about your performance? Are they having you do substantial additional work, or will a tweak or two get it done?
louis - Ever played an SC-2? I haven't played a reissue, but I suspect that if you spent a bit of time with my old one, you might reconsider.
I need to check back later to respond to the fine lunch report today. I have salmon in the oven and I need to watch it closely, feed the family, and go build a birdhouse with one of my boys at Cub Scouts tonight. Look forward to checking out the videos/tunes when I get home later. - ed

Kit - Sleep Walk is another of mine. What a great piece of music. Those other songs are great too. I really enjoyed the feel of The Silencers tune. I agree that 'Well-a-Wiggy' sounds like a '50s tune, but the production screams '80s! I've searched for earlier versions of it and come up with nothing. I suspect it may be a '50s tune that they changed the lyrics to.
Kyle - Big congratulations on the thesis defense. Re-amping sounds like the easiest way to tackle that opus! I can only begin to imagine how long it would have taken in the first place.
glvourot - I'd all but forgotten about that Sunburst one. She's a real beauty.
Nice to see that there are a lot of music projects on

If I didn't have an ASAT Special already, the GAS-meter for a Himalayan blue SC-2 with maple neck would be around 9.5.
As far as projects go, I'd like to finish off something/anything that I've started recording in the last 6-months. Unfortunately my enthusiasm for finishing projects is only a fraction of my enthusiasm for starting.
Have fun with the Hoagy thing Jamie. Skylark is my favourite Hoagy tune, and one of my favourite ever songs.

Re: LR Monday 12/12
Great start to the week, Jamie.
Stardust is my warm-up song on the upright bass. It falls under my fingers just right, and helps me zero in my intonation (not that I ever get that close to being zeroed in - more accurately, I don't get that close to intonation, period). It's also an earworm for me. Other jazz earworm melodies are 'Round Midnight (a favorite warm-up on guitar) and All the Things You Are. Eric Dolphy's recording of "Feathers" also stays with me a long time after the disc stops spinning.
My SC-2 lust comes and goes. When I first discovered G&L back around '98, I singled out the SC-2 as the one model I could probably afford if I could have found one. It eventually hit the point of being a steady 9.5 on the GAS scale, but I never made the effort to hunt one down and one never found me. I finally saw one in person last spring - a used reissue in a local shop - I was very underwhelmed by the overall feel. Part of it may have been that I generally haven't liked black guitars, and I've always had a strong preference for a 7.5" neck radius. I had just bought an amp, so I let that one pass me by. A couple of months later the same shop got an '82 model in red. When I got wind of it, I called and bought the the guitar over the phone without hearing or playing it first. After a setup it plays very nicely and sounds terrific. But regardless of the feel or the sound, it has a vibe that none of my other guitars can match.
My last acquisition was a black ASAT with a 12" radius, and it's definitely expanded my preferences. I could definitely see myself going for an SC-2 reissue now if the opportunity arises. My ideal one would be Belair green (or maybe something sparkly) with a hard tail.
I don't have any projects in the works aside from restoring a couple of short-scale Fenders which will probably won't be completed until next spring, when it's warm enough to spray the finishes. I have been taking advantage of the season to work on my chord melody skills with holiday standards, though.

ps- Congrats on the thesis defense, Shirmy!

Jamie,
How 'bout; Under The Double Eagle. I don't know who wrote it but Merle Travis and Chet Atkins have recorded it. Great instrumental. Its getting forgotten nowadays.
1 on the G&L. My wife came home last week with a Gretsch Pro Jet for me for Christmas. She stopped by a mega pawn shop here and saw it on the wall. She knew I had been wanting a Gretsch and she has a 6th sense on picking guitars.

Hey Jamie (and the rest of all y'all for that matter)
Todays lunch was a welcome lunch for a new colleague of ours. Hey, I never say no to good food payed by the boss! Note, I said 'good' food not 'free'. There are plenty of opportunities at my workplace where lunches are catered but the quality ...
Listing for an SC-2? Yeah. An Leo-era, black, early shape, hard tail SC-2. Hard to find though ...
No music projects going on. Still waiting for the music room at work to be finished in the current remodel so the 'on the job' band can start practicing again.

Listing for an SC-2? Yeah. An Leo-era, black, early shape, hard tail SC-2. Hard to find though ...
No music projects going on. Still waiting for the music room at work to be finished in the current remodel so the 'on the job' band can start practicing again.

Re: LR Monday 12/12
Great start Jamie!
I'd say about a 7 for the sc2. Pecking order would be Bluesboy, Legacy, SC2 at the moment. When I do get around to it I'm hoping I'll be able to custom order one.
Music projects...well I had been working on an acoustic duo thingy but my singer has gone mia, last practice was almost a month ago with no contact since. She was the singer in the other band I had a couple years back, and kinda did the same thing then, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Hopefully getting together with an old friend from high school, who is a phenomenal bassist, and a newer friend, who is a drummer, over Christmas break. We'll see how it goes, keeping my fingers crossed.
Lunch was a 6" chicken sub from Subway...and a chocolate chip cookie

1. The sc-2 isn't even on the radar. I bought 2 G&Ls this year, not in a hurry to get another. Now that I have more guitars, I need more amps. And that has been my music project. The speaker cab is finished, the pre-amp is in working state but needs more work, and the Power amp just began.
Chicken and fruit for lunch.
Thanks Jamie for picking up the LR duties
