GLDP Lunch Report. Wednesday November 9, 2011
For Lunchtime today, I'll be packing some chili from a batch made a week ago. It's been cold, dreary and rainy here the past couple days. In other words, a perfect day for a bowl of chili.
Ours is pretty basic with meat, beans, and noodles, and sometimes cornmeal for an extra thick variety. Yummmm. Add some fresh-baked bread and you have some real comfort food.
Do you have a favorite chili recipe you enjoy? Or a favorite comfort food?
Current Gigging -
One thing about working as solely a recording project is not playing out very much. So around 4 years back I hooked with an outfit that ONLY plays out, lol. That's called Dr. Chows Love Medicine, and we get pretty regular work. Mostly bars and small clubs, street festivals and the like. We're all in it for fun at this point, and we do a pretty wide range of covers along with originals.
I believe being in this band has helped my playing too, almost forcing me to be more versatile and to work on getting the right sounds for the songs.
Parts Guitars -
A couple years back, a Cavalier body fell into my hands, and I began to seek out parts to put something together out of it. Here it is today, with the recent add of a NOS pickup in the bridge slot.
I've seen the angled-offset MFD described as too bright. In this guitar it sounds really cool, rich and kind of creamy in the middle with a nice chime on the top end and plenty of low end. Looking forward to hear how it sounds with the band. A new weapon in the tone arsenal, TY flea-bay!
G&L Question:
Since I know what you like in a new geet, what would you put together using ONLY G&L parts? One rule - No Routers Allowed!
I'm fairly brief today, as I found out this morning there's a cracked rim on the car that was causing the tire to lose air, so I'm scrambling to deal with that. Stupid potholes! Grrrr
Tune in tomorrow, turkey will be involved...

Excellent Question. Blown Minds want to know!
the dream partscaster?
I would start with a maple ASAT special body.
a 12" radius neck with the original F-100/SC-x (are they all the same) headstock. Anyway, the BIG one.
Black Crinkle hardware.
Then a big box of hand wound MFD's to experiment with.
maybe more later..

Re: GLDPLR - 11.09.11
Had lunch at a buffet with a friend today. Same old usual stuff.
I find that gigging is great for personal development. Especially when you continue to learn new material. Our band has a two night gig the 9 and 10th of December in the twin cities. One of our guys lives in Northern Minnesota has decided not to do this with us. We needed a guitarist and my daughter, Kari, is an excellent player. She is going to gig with us and this is our first time gigging together. It will be a blast. She has charted out our song list and we are getting together tomorrow to go over the songs. I am a lucky guy!
Partscasters. I have a partscaster Fender and it is great, but no G&Ls.
My Bluesboy Bigsby doesn't count as I had to route the pickup cavity. G&Ls are much more difficult to build due to the unavailability of parts unless you want to put aftermarket pickups in them. I have been thinking about trying a set of Lace Sensors in my S-500.-- Darwin

Re: GLDPLR - 11.09.11
No partscaster G&Ls on my to-do list, but I am getting ready to dig into a couple of Fender Duo Sonics. It started as a plan for a fall/winter project with my son, reviving a badly mangled MIM re-issue. The body was in such bad shape that I thought about replacing it. I found a great deal on an original mid-60s body, and then decided it wouldn't be right sticking a MIM neck on a vintage body. A good deal on a '64 neck followed last week, along with an original 1960s bridge. So, the MIM instrument will be a practice piece and the Duo Sonic partscaster will follow. I'm trying to decide now whether to hunt all original parts (which would put the project into the same price range as a complete instrument), or complete it with an original-spec aftermarket pickguard and decent tuners. Either way, it should keep me occupied through the winter. The body was refinished in blue, but wasn't clear coated. If I can buff out the current finish I will spray a clear coat on it; otherwise, it will probably end up seafoam green.
I couldn't bring myself to part-out old G&Ls, but if I was faced with a mismatched pile of parts I would hope to end up with a maple ASAT body with HG-style humbuckers and a 7.5" radius ebony fingerboard. In other words, a humbucker version of an '86-'87 ASAT.

Re: GLDPLR - 11.09.11
I went to undergraduate school in the Cincinnati area, so I have an affinity for a bit of sugar and cinnamon in my chili. Favorite comfort food might be a good hunk of meatloaf, mashed potatoes and green beans. Rice pudding and a cup of cocoa for dessert. Ahh....
Hey Brian, I don't gig or record right now, but I really enjoyed listening to some of your tunes earlier today. Seriously. Which guitar part are you doing on the Eddie/Mr. Natural tune? Great stuff. You guys rock!
Parts guitars: I've never owned or made one, but can I cheat with regard to routing and G&L-only parts? I want an SC/Mustang body in Korina, with a Tom Anderson H3 in the bridge position and an over-wound large MFD to balance it in the neck position. Maple neck with Ebony board. The rest might be history in someone else's hands....
Again, noodles? - ed
PS: Chili is often served over Spaghetti in SW Ohio - but IN the Chili??????

Re: GLDPLR - 11.09.11
Lunch was scrambled eggs with fresh mushrooms, bacon and a piece of toast.
Noodles in chili: Have not heard of it but chili is not that different than Italian pasta dishes.........I mean what is the difference between a bean and a noodle when they are swimming in sauce? Adding noodles is a cheap way to extend the amount of chili. Looking at it this way I can imagine what it would be like.
Comfort food: I make a white rice with real maple syrup, half & half, butter, and cinnamon. My mother served this except she used sugar instead of maple syrup. I switched to syrup because sugar made my teeth hurt. You scoop out a blob of steaming rice into a bowl, drop in several pieces of butter to melt over the rice, sprinkle with cinnamon, pour some maple syrup over the top then pour some half & half over the heap. There is a science to the amount of each and you want an island in the center with a moat around the edge of the bowl. You want to keep the island peak covered in cinnamon sort of dry then as you eat you dip into the half & half/melted butter/maple syrup getting just the right amount of dry to wet per spoonful. You want to avoid mixing it all up like a big soup. It will taste completely different if you do. The process of working away at the island and dipping contributes to the comfort.
Gigging: Mentioned a few times, I am warming up after a long break. I would like to be a part of a band that gigs at least a few times per year eventually.
G&L Parts-guitar:.......there isn't anything I would put together from only G&L parts. If I could use different pickups I would install noiseless Kinman's with cavity shielding and a different pickguard. Might change out a neck.

Re: GLDPLR - 11.09.11 - - - Now With Pics!!
Again folks thanks for sticking around, I did manage to get pics up. Have no idea why I couldn't re-size them earlier, WTH. The cars are being dealt with, but having both down is stressful..
Did not expect noodle backlash Elbow noodles cooked separate should have been specified BTW . Fairly common in the Midwest for all I know. If you think that's nutty, wait til tomorrows LR..
sbnt -
+1 on the neck choice, and the rest as well.
Darwin -
That's so cool that you are able to share that with your daughter. Great story to it too, wish the best.
KenC -
Nice winter projects indeed. Let us know how they turn out. The use of correct-era parts is a challenge, but worth it, IMHO
Ed -
The elbow macaroni is cooked before adding. Usually dumped to a bowl before applying the chili. Mix it up and there you have it. And yes, I know of Skyl**e in Cincy. To me that's a pasta dish with chili-style sauce and a mountain of cheese. Thanks for giving a listen. On that song the the SC-3 comes in around the minute mark. The thinner sounding guitar, and pretty much when I knew I needed some more practice AND a better amp
MGM -
That rice sounds awfully good. I'd enjoy just about any kind of curry or stir-fry over that or even straight up, Yummm.
Here's to better tomorrows.. Ein Prosit!

Chili: Depends on my mood, if I'm being healthy I make a southwest turkey chili: ground turkey, black beans, kidney beans, corn, onions, green chili's, diced tomato, jalapeno, and some chipotle. You would never know it's turkey
I've made it before with pork too, stick a pork roast in the crockpot till it falls apart, drain and then make your chili very tasty indeed...I'm definitely making chili this weekend
Noodles: When I was a kid I didn't like beans so I would make chili with elbow pasta, it's not as odd as you would think. The noodles absorb a lot of flavor/spice and it thickens things up.
G&L: That Korina sc2 ed described sounds good to me! I'd go for the traditional sc1 set up in korina, all maple neck, with black crinkle saddle lock bridge, Broadcaster/early ASAT large MFD (also black), a nice pickguard (ala Band of Susans) and a three way switch wired like an esquire
