Lunch Report - Tuesday 13th september -

Post by supereiv »

Hi, first of all, thank you to all of you that provided some nice answers... I wasn't trying to be cruel with my fellow Parisians, but I'm glad the most of you still want to visit us :happy0007: be sure to give me a shout !

Lunch today is some left-over from yesterday's dinner : wheat seeds cooked façon pilaf with vegetables and slices of merguez sausages, a banana and a fat-free vanilla yoghurt.

It's funny how things changed in one generation, my father, who is now retired, had only two jobs in is entire life and my mother only one. I had a lot of different jobs :
in my twenties I was a professionnal musician for 4 years then I became a firefighter in Paris, in a quarter named Le Marais (the swamp literally) for 5 years, then I worked in the national railroad company (aka SNCF) and I'm now a designer in reinforced concrete (I currently work on the plans of a 80000 m² hospital) since 2007.
I don't want to change anymore as you may guess :D

Time to answer questions :

G&L question of the day :
Does the marketing strategy of the G&L factory matter to you ?
for me it does, I love the guitars, and I love the prices, they're not bargain, but they're not overpriced. I remember a topic with Craig relating a mail from the factory, and it explained their strategy of marketing. I find that really clever to build good instruments, as good as possible, and not going into the same trap as the other companies. G&L is a right sized factory with no compromise on the quality, and not tempted by growing too much. I like that.

NON-G&L question of the day :
What's your style, are you a tweaker, or are you lazy, IE how many sounds do you really use in rehearsals and onstage ?

I confess I use maybe 2 or 3 sounds, I have two very good overdrive pedals (a barber small fry and a T-Rex Moller), a wah, my fingers and the controls of the guitar, all I need now is maybe a good tap tempo tremolo (I'd love to have a diamond trem one of these days but 245$ gosh :shocked003: ), so I guess I can call my self lazy

have a good day

I would say Lazy.

I spent about 5 years playing directly into an amp. Now I have my pedals, but there are a couple of songs I use Tremelo or phaser. And up until recently I didn't have those pedals either.

Keep up the good work Xavier

Of course I want G&L to prosper, but they seem to be at the right size to keep up the the great build quality. There are 3 G&L dealers in my local area and one of them was ignorant about SC-2's. So they might want to know what their authorized dealers are up to.......

I have two pedals, a Boss RC-2 loop station and a BYOC British Blues Overdrive. The PTB system on G&L's is one of the best things about them so I use it to shape tone most of the time. I use reverb ( from the amp ) as well. Thats about it.

Hi Xavier and great to see you up this week. after checking some of your work on one of the links you provided a wfew weeks back I'd love to see and hear more of photographoc hobby if you can fit it in.

From Today ...

I currently work on the plans of a 80000 m² hospital. I work in WA's health sector and the State is currently implementing a mammoth hospital rebuilding program, the flagship being the in-progress Fiona Stanley Hospital. Hospitals are huge and unique projects and you must be enjoying worjing on yours.

Does the marketing strategy of the G&L factory matter to you ? Marketing strategy ... not really. Business strategy ... yeah I think G&L has positioned itself nicely. Much smaller and they wouldn't have the economies of scale to offer their instruments at a reasonable price point. Much larger and it would be that much more difficult to maintain quality standards and attention to detail.

... and Yesterday

Paris Been to Paris twice but the last time was many years ago. When you come from a "new" city like Parth, its hard not to be awe struck when you visit the major cities of Europe with their centuries of history and culture.

what's the last band/artist do you discovered recently and really liked I ha never heard of these guys when they toured here last last year but went to see them anyway. I was impressed with their live show and the CD is still on regular rotation in the car.

From the rockier end ...

and from the more laid back end

Nice lunch reports.

I don't really care about G&L's marketing strategy. I think they are about the best value of guitar around, and have been from the get-go. So as long as they keep that up, I will keep looking their way.

Tinkerer or Lazy? I like the way you put this. I am both. I like to mess with stuff, but I am really slow to add pieces to my rig. I was really looking into pedals for the first time in like 20 years, then I got interested in slide and so I am back messing with my playing instead of setup.

I also work on minor amp mod's instead of effects. I have pretty much standardized on playing two similar amps in stereo, but now want to try and get a fuller across the spectrum sound by customizing both amps a little.

Marketing strategy ... not really. Business strategy
That's exactly what I wanted to say... Talking about broken english :happy0007:

Actually, that hospital in the link you provided, is almost of the same size as the last one I worked on, 165000sqm ! It's pretty big

My grandfather spent some time in hospital in Amiens during World War 1. I'll bet it didn't look like that back then!

G&L Question - G&L's marketing/business strategy doesn't really matter to me. I'm happy for them to do whatever they want as long as quality and price/performance ratio is not affected.

Non-G&L Question - I would call myself a tinkerer. I don't have a lot of effects, but I like to experiment in their order of placement and the sound of different guitars through them. I have a few favourite guitar-amp-effects configurations that I fall back on when I actually want to play some music. There's nothing that quite compares with a good guitar straight into a good amp, with a touch of reverb or delay IMHO.

So nice that the board has an international flavor!

BTW, from yesterday...I like the Z-coils. Being a Legacy player, I love the Comanche. Those Z-coils can be real problem solvers in a noisy environment, and they have a lot of output. With the PTB controls, you can really get a lot of tones. The S-500's MFDs are really good too, but the Comanche is probably my go-to guitar if I have to do a gig where I can only take one guitar. Otherwise, I'll take my usual combination of a Legacy and a Legacy Special.

===================

I have some 50 guitars now, and I will typically take five or six to a gig. I use Mesa Boogie amps, and everyone knows Mesas are very tweakable. For the most part, I set them in the sweet spots and forget them. If I'm recording, the Mark IV has a lot of options to change the feel and response, if I need it.

And I have a pedalboard full of pedals: wah, compressor, preamp, phase, chorus, delay and harmonizer--the trick is, I try use them sparingly--maybe only on two to five songs a night. And I use the distortions on the amps; but in all, I play clean a lot too.

The big problem for me is that I do get lazy, and don't set up my gear to tweak it very often.

Marketing is okay, but I do think the ads could be better. I'd like them to do a little bragging about their tech features, and the history of G&L--rather than just pretty pictures.

And I REALLY want a Comanche 12-string!!!
