P-90s in a Legacy ?
Has anyone tried or seen, or have experience with P-90s in a Legacy ? I'm thinking of trying a three P-90 setup in one
I can get a lefty Legacy scratchplate configured for three P-90s, which is actually surprising, but I'm wondering if the body route on the Legacy is wide enough to accommodate the pickups without additional routing ? And I'm not sure about the string spacing / pole piece /string alignment with P-90s in a non Gibson guitar. I'm sure most P-90s have a Gibson string spacing.
Any thoughts or input greatly appreciated.

As a point of reference this youtube video shows how close to the edge of the pickgaurd the neck pickup is on a Warmoth strat. Also note how close the bridge pickup is to the volume knob.

And if this helps a shot of a Legacy body ...
It looks wide enough.

Paul, I sent a couple of messages via PM, but I think I would try getting some actual measurements of the routing as well as the pickups. They look like they might squeeze in there, though. I could take a measurement off my guitar, but it would mean taking it apart......LOL.

Ok, I was able to lift off one side of the pickguard to get some measurements. It's about 95 or 96mm or 3.75 inches. Of course, if the P-90s fall short of that, they'll fit.

Thanks Jim, got your messages, much appreciated. Looks to me like they hopefully might fit. ( Rose tinted glasses possibly at play, or GAS maybe ? ).

At the very least, it looks like a fun project! As long as you can get a guard cut for it, I'll bet it would sound pretty nice. Here's a link to some pickup dimensions I just found that might help put some things into perspective:

SP, a perfect victim and a good looking one at that. Now, what color is the pickguard and P90's going to be?-- Darwin

Well the plan was to install P-90s but now I've found the guitar I don't think I want to cut this one up !darwinohm wrote:SP, a perfect victim and a good looking one at that. Now, what color is the pickguard and P90's going to be?-- Darwin
I think I will be, hopefully, going for a set of Wilde noise free singles. Their L280S pickups are supposedly likened to " a soft P-90".
Or possibly a set of noiseless Dimarzios. I'm looking for something with a warm fat tone and medium to high output, and at this point I've read so many description and looked at that many YouTube clips my head is fried trying to pick pickups

P-90s make everything better, if you run into hum though you can always swap the backplate for one of them illitch ones (remember the one guy had his ASAT routed for the similar system). After some homework those are very very well recieved (and it was neat, I just wouldn't route for it).

Re: P-90s in a Legacy ?
I was thinking of noiseless P-90s. I have Fralin noisefree P-90s in a Heritage 137 and they are the business, stone dead silent even with very high gain and still give a great clean jazz tone on the neck pickup. This time I was going to go with Manlius pickups Quiet Goat models.sirmyghin wrote:P-90s make everything better, if you run into hum though you can always swap the backplate for one of them illitch ones (remember the one guy had his ASAT routed for the similar system). That was before I decided not to mod this Legacy. But that was yesterdays decision and as I'm having a hard time getting info on the various types of Wilde pickups it may be back on the cards. I can get a lefty Legacy guard with three P-90 slots. My biggest concern is that P-90s are generally mounted directly to the guitar and not the guard, so the setup might be a bit complicated with the controls on the guard and the pickups on the guitar itself, with wires going between the two.
So that got me thinking of a three mini humbucker setup instead, Duncan or DiMarzio are easily available and mount to the guard and are easily height adjustable unlike P-90s.
So at the moment I'm officially undecided. I think.

Re: P-90s in a Legacy ?
It is hardly a mod, just take off the old pickguard, and put on a new one set up for the 90s . If you use Dog eared ons you can mount right to the guard too. Then you have 2 interchangible pickguards, heck you could rig some kind of quick connect thing for the outs to output jack... Am I helping at all, I mean it is not like you are severely altering the guitar, the bath tub route makes it compliant and completely stealth to mod?

Re: P-90s in a Legacy ?
I want to keep the PTB setup and use a new pickguard, just transfer all the pots to the new guard. I'm nearly certain that dog ear mountings would be too wide, especially at the bridge, soapbar P-90s barely fit as it is. Plus dog ears would sit on top of the guard and presumably hit the strings.sirmyghin wrote:It is hardly a mod, just take off the old pickguard, and put on a new one set up for the 90s . I've found a photo online of a lefty strat with 3 min hums, interesting !

Re: P-90s in a Legacy ?
A mini hum will never be a P90 though. I would just wire up my own PTB (there is no voodoo magic involved, pretty straight forward, one of them is just a tone pot backwards). That is where guitars with pickguards rock, I would probably have a good 4 pickguards, all loaded and wired differently.

Re: P-90s in a Legacy ?
update ....
I finally decided on Dimarzio Injectors for neck and bridge with an Area 67 in the middle.
Hopefully I'll be playing and sounding like this guy when the job is done.

Obviously the pickups are doing all the work, I mean who has ever heard of that Paul Gilbert guy anyway ( I love Gilberts work, he generally has a very solid groove to his playing. )SouthpawGuy wrote:update ....
