End of the week lunch report

Post by westsideduck »

Well, yesterday I was basicaly glued to my desk but today I get to hit the road to do inspections so I'll take the lovely wife out with me and stop for a nice lunch in the city.

Keep the beat day, lets discuss the backbone of any band, the drums and bass, I know we have some bass players hanging around, are there any part time drummers?

I started out wanting to play drums when I was a kid, my mother told my father if he bought me drums we would both be in the dog house with no dinner so dad went out and bought me a new Harmony acoustic! I've had some nice kits over the years, here are my two most recent kits

I gave these Sonars to one of my nephews

Image

After I picked up these mid 80's Pearls, 13 ply maple shell, they were the top of the line at the time, they used to be black and chrome but the guy I bought them from had all the hardware poder coated in white and sent the kit to pearl to put on the new coverings, they do have a different look.

Image

I've downsised the kit this year to a five piece to get more room in the jammin cabin

I have two old G&L basses, an SB-1 and an SB-2, I play the 2 more then the one as I like the neck a bit better. I think the SB series are great basses for a guitarest, they are lighter and fell more guitar like with the smaller bodies and don't lack in tone or playability compared to a L-1 0r 2K I also had an Interceptor bass but didn't like the pups much so got rid of it, it looked damn cool though.

Lets see your bass or drum porn

As the sun sets on this week I bid you farewell and thanks for having me as your lucnch reporter, I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Nice drums, the white mounts look really cool. I don't have any new bass porn nowadays so I am unfortunately going to refrain. The side effects will be no PM offers to buy it from Darwinohm (which ofcourse hasn't happened, but I assume it is only a matter of time, I mean it is red and everything , cheers to Darwin for being such a good sport about my teasing though).

Got no rhythm. :shocked028: But a jammin' cabin is an amazing thing....

Loved your acoustic post yesterday. I have an old hohner dreadnaught, with updated nut and tuners. It is a really pretty decent sounding guitar. I bought a hard case for it, and it cost as much as the guitar!

Crazy busy, but wanted to stop by. jeremy

I took a few drum lessons when I was about six, couldn't stay with it though.

My bass is rarely played, it's a Fender Precision "Lyte" bass from about 1994, I think. Really pretty, with chocolate brown edges fading to an amber burst, and gold hardware. It has a PJ set up, a Jazz-style neck and an active preamp with Volume, Blend, Treble and Bass controls. I bought it used, from Mike Lull's Guitar Works in Bellevue, WA. I'd stopped by to ask him a question about something; saw it in the corner, and thought it was one of his custom basses. He was just taking it in on trade from a customer who was buying one of his custom instruments. Mike knew the guy, and so to avoid the mandatory police hold I actually bought it from the customer, who then handed the money to Mike. I'd been looking for an inexpensive, quality made bass for a couple of years, and this was perfect. The whole transaction was completely unexpected, and probably took less than five minutes from the time I walked in the door. The bass came with a Jackson-branded SKB case, and I walked out with a mint-condition bass for $250.

I must have gotten a deal because everybody who plays it tells me it it not nearly as good as their Jazz, vintage P-bass, or Ric--but then they pick it up and then they start in on how much their back hurts and, "Can I use it for the gig Saturday?" LOL! "NOOOOO!" Anyway, I have been really happy with it--and I haven't even ever changed the strings on it since I got it in about 1996! That's how little I use it.

I have several bass amps. I bought a Randall Commander 115 120-watt combo at a garage sale for $40. That's served me very well, and it actually sounds pretty good for a ratty, bluesy, SRV guitar tone. My good bass amp is a c. 2000 Peavey Combo 300 with a 115 BW speaker. That's pretty good sounding rig IMO, and could easily handle any small club. I got that one cheap, too. And I have a couple of these little 50-watt Acoustic Control AB-50 110 wedges that I use for my Alesis SR-16 dum machine, though they are designed for acoustic bass. The P-Lyte sounds pretty good through them too.

Great job this week!

I bought my first drum this week. A Gig Percussion 16" floor tom. I'm going to cut it way down and crossbreed it with a Crate P-Bass copy to make a bass banjo. Should be fun.

That SB-2 is a looker. I love the first style SB-2. They're great.

WSD, Nice week. Great pics. Those SB's are great basses for us 6-stringers...

My Dad had a small kit which he used in a swing combo he jammed with. I rem playing 'Radar Love' on 'em. Hey, I was 12!....
Still have them, had a drum tech give them a once-over, and the kick and a tom survive on the current basement kit. Now my 8-yr old is learning on them..
I can play 2 things on drums- Ramones and Pink Floyd.

Bass: Had this one for a while now. Late 60's Epiphone Newport
Short-scale All Mahogany set-neck. Lacking the original tuners and bridge when I got it. Big Gibby EBO Mudbucker pickup. A fun to play keeper...

Stay Tuned....

I love a good drum kit. Both the guys I play with are fantastic drummers with equally nice kits. One is a Gretsch Custom, the other a Sonor something-or-other - the one down from the top of the line.

That jammin' cabin looks like a fun place to hang out!

There's only one thing that I beat, and I have no drums (sue me!).

I don't play bass either, but I did good in turning a "high end" guitar that I didn't much use or deserve into a couple of Leo-era bass guitars.

You may recognize the guy gigging with my instruments as our very own bassman. Not only is he a great guy and G&L enthusiast, but he plays very well and I use him to set up my basses and six-stringed instruments as well.

btw, it's impossible to tell from the pictures, but my early SB-2 isn't black; it's "Bahama Blue." Also, I should mention that I sought and obtained these particular models on recommendation from our friend Brock (who is crazy, but in a good way). I look forward to learning to hold up the low end one day..... Until then, the beat goes on. - ed

Hey Duck, great Lr's this past week.We just got back.

A neat assortment of acoustics that you showed on Thursday. I have a three acoustics but only use two of them for recording. The third is a 1962 Fender Concert, Indian rosewood fingerboard and appears to be a dead ringer to yours. Mine is serial number 1193 and I am quite certain that it was built in 1961 or 62. I am not a drummer but also own several basses. I primarily use my stingray 5 but my Fender American Deluxe is very light in a 4 string version. My L-2000 Fretlees is also quite light. The Stingray 5 is quite heavy and I sure noticed it during the two gigs the weekend of the 4 Th. I will be gigging it again next weekend. Thanks again Duck, you have a pretty slick room to hang out in!-- Darwin

I was playing a Stingray5 bass at the store just yesteday Darwin, this one was however a natural finished ash and was very light. Very nice basses I must say, enough to make me consider a Bongo 6 for my next acquision (they had no 6 in store that I saw).

Sirmy, I have the HH configuration and it really does a variety of tone. I have 2 Stingray 5's and the other one is a H. I would like to trade it someday for an l-2500 or a ASAT 5 string. although I am not sure if they make one.

I played a single H, no shot at the G&L but the L-2500 I played was not as good a bass as the Stingray 5. Both play very well but the Stingray had something more to it.
