Check out this post in our G&L Knowledgebase, G&L Tech Tips sub-forum: What should the pickup height setting be?

Hope this helps.

Fretted at the 22nd fret (I have updated the reference post).

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the update on the reference post Craig, although I think we've been around this issue before, and the considered opinion was that the recommended pickup height is just a 'starter for 10'. Individual players will experiment with pickup heights to suit their ears. I know I certainly like to experiment a bit.

Thanks. Bill

If it is ok to jump in on a thread ............. I have a pickup height question. I realize there are measurement guidelines but I am wondering about pickup height adjustment.

For example, my ASAT Special neck pickup is a fantastic pickup but can muddy up a little on some amp settings. Is this because the pickup is to high or too low?

I would suggest that you try different heights and see what works best for you.
Like Steve says: "It's one of those adjustments that can easily be changed if someone wants to hear the difference
with the pickups a little closer or a little further from the strings."

Hope this helps.
