First G&L!! Info appreciated on my new ASAT
Hello forumites! I recently purchased by first G&L - an ASAT in metallic purple with double binding. I was hoping you very knowledgeable folks could give me any and all info on the guitar, no detail too insignificant!
I'd also appreciate some help with dating (without taking off the neck). The serial number is oddly B052658 (my understanding was the B was for Bass and G for Guitar, but it's definitely a "B"). I'm hoping this is an American made G&L (it did come with a G&L molded plastic case).
Pictures are below, as I said, no detail too small as I'd love to learn more about the guitar. Thanks guys!!

That is a beautiful 3 bolt special! I am not one of the super knowledgeable. Actually, I am not even one of the knowledgeable folks. Then there are the guru level folks who stick there heads in once in a while.
To get started on dating, you can search the G&L registry for a range around your number. I Also, guitars with B serial numbers are quite common. There are some threads about decoding serial numbers, I think in the knowledgebase. But I haven't looked for a while.
Welcome.And enjoy that beauty.

That looks like a G not a B to me on the serial. Very nice guitar, your fretboard needs some love though! Oil that puppy up.

+1 on thinking that's a "G" not a "B". Those black 3-bolt neck plates are hard to read!
Beautiful ASAT! It's definitely built in the US.
Scanning similar serial numbers (assuming it's a "G"), and the fact that it's a 3-bolt neck, looks like it puts the build date somewhere around 1997.

Beautiful ASAT Special, Great woodgrain in the neck and it appears to be the same color as Jamies bass. This is a classy rig with the white binding. --Darwin

Re: First G&L!! Info appreciated on my new ASAT
I have a 3-bolt S-500 with a B serial number from 1997. There was a whole batch of guitars released with B serial numbers around 1996-1997 because of an error in the manufacture of the 3-bolt plates. B serial numbers are normally used for G&L basses, but some of the 3-bolt guitar plates were accidentally given bass serial numbers.
Love that ASAT Special by the way! The double binding looks great against the purple.

That is one of the nicest ASATs I've seen. Ever.
I want it....
I wouldn't get too hung up on serial numbers and dates. It's definitely a guitar and not a bass The "G" on the serial no. of my '97 Classic looks more like a "6", which is close to a "b" or even a "B".
Again, that is BEAUTIFUL!

After reviewing your neckplate photo, I also think that the serial number is G052658.
We have information on the pickups in the G&L Knowledgebase. The neck is the bi-cut neck and you can find information on it on G&L's main website in the
Features section. Here's the link to the specific page.
Your guitar's neck is made from birdseye Maple and the fretboard is rosewood.
I also agree with the others, that the double bound body and pearloid pickguard with that finish is outstanding.
When you have a moment, please do register it in our G&L Registry.
Hope this helps.

Re: First G&L!! Info appreciated on my new ASAT
First, let me me thank everyone for being so welcoming. I appreciate all the kind words about the guitar and the information.
I've been through about 10 or so telecaster guitars over the past few years. I had almost given up on teles but wanted to give it one more try since this beauty caught my eye. I'm really glad I did! It's not too often that you find a purple guitar that looks like this one! I feel very lucky having gotten this one, especially for the less than $700 I paid with the OHSC. Still playing with the MFDs but they seem like very unique pickups.
I think I've found that what I never really dug about previous teles was the belly cut. This one doesn't have one and it's much more comfortable. Also, the neck is more substantial on this one, unlike many toothpick fenders I've played. I'm really happy with the purchase and am looking forward to bonding with the guitar. I'll likely throw some sperzels on it since I am the world's worst string winder.
Finally, I'm 99.999% sure it's a "B" I looked at it under bright light, a flash light, a black light, got the wife involved and even took a partial etching with some paper I had around. However, as blarg wisely points out, it's definitely a guitar and not a bass

Even if the S/N starts with a 'B', don't worry about it. The significance (or not) of a guitar with a 'B' S/N recently came up in this post. So you would be in good company. Nicest purple I've ever seen

P.S. The 'scratch on a piece of paper' is the surest way to find out whether it is 'B' or 'G'. But to support your assertion if it being a 'B', the 052000 range is commensurate with the S/N's on these misstamped neck plates.

Rub some toothpaste into the letters on the serial number. You'll find it is a "G". The powder coating on these can be very tricky at times.
Nice guitar.....I really dig the double bound body.

Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.

That is a sweet guitar! I never thought purple would look good on a guitar, but I am wrong!

Re: First G&L!! Info appreciated on my new ASAT
Beside the fact it doesn't matter, I too think it's a 'B', because the 'G's in that serial numbers have exactly the same shape as 0 (zero). I mean you could put a G in a 0 and that first letter has a more straight left side.yoeleven wrote:You'll find it is a "G".
And as a matter of fact, the only one among us who has direct sight, is sure it's a B and finally it's known, that they mixed up that plates.
Very nice guitar! Although it has the wrong colour, should be some kind of red, but just for my taste.

I registered my Legacy Special a while back and it never dawned on me that it was also a B serial number, also starting with B052, making it a 97 model.Guitar Josh wrote:The more I play this guitar, the more I love it.
