6100 Fretwire

Post by sirmyghin »

So G&L uses 6100 fretwire right? .055x.113 on dunlops size scale. They call it "Med Jumbo" but most companies call that 'Jumbo', so what is going on here? I like the size (6100) but I am hoping they will be giving that to me , not typical med-jumbo 6110 or something. Anyone confirm what they use?

When G&L switched from the Flat Wide fretwire to the Dunlop 6100 fretwire, Dunlop called that size "Medium Jumbo". This is what G&L put on their website and it has remained that way ever since. In the 2001 G&L Catalog, Page 25, the fretwire was listed as Jumbo, but in later catalogs is again listed as "Medium Jumbo".

So, the bottom line is, that they use Dunlop 6100 fretwire for their standard frets and Dunlop 6230 fretwire for the optional vintage frets.

Hope this helps.

It does Craig, every freaking company just calls them different things word wise, and not all 6100 fretwires company to company are identical. Knowing it is dunlop though, that is excellent.

I like this fret size a lot as it provides an almost scalloped fretboard feel. If you try to fret to board you sharp strings, but if they are well dressed and such it feels like skating on air. If they were stainless I would be indefinitely happy, but if it proves an issue I found a place nearby that can do that for me (maybe get them to bump the fretboard radius up to 14 or 15 when they do it too.. hmm, choices, choices.

Thanks a lot Craig.
