Gotoh Tuners on New G&Ls?
First , hello. I'm not a G&L owner but I've got my eyes on possibly buying a Legacy.
Second, there are Gotoh tuners on a few of the Legacy guitars that I've seen on eBay that are tagged as new and are being sold by authorized dealers. I thought that G&L only used Schaller tuners? I'm not opposed to Gotoh tuners - in fact I really like them and have the locking versions on a couple of my guitars. But, if G&L doesn't use Gotoh tuners this seems strange.
This is one example - http://www.ebay.com/itm/G-L-LEGACY-USA- ... 290wt_1272
The one listed above seems pretty inexpensive for a new Legacy doesn't it? Is it legit?
Thanks

Welcome,
looks legit, I'm not sure about the tuners, but they look right.
The seller has some good deals, maybe his stock has some guitars that weren't
selling elsewhere for some reason.
(there are rules on the board here about discussing new G&L prices, to be fair to dealers )
I like the red ASAT.

And Spercel tunes are known so far.Hyperborea wrote:I thought that G&L only used Schaller tuners?
But all of those have a hidden locking pin, so this visible locking screw is kind of disappointing, a sign of cheapness in my eyes.

The Gotoh's do have a screw to keep the tuner in place. I prefer pins.louis cyfer wrote: what are you talking about?

Old Schallers:
New Schallers:
That Gotoh's are like the old Schallers, a step backwards.

Re: Gotoh Tuners on New G&Ls?
Okay, I heard back from Steve on those tuners:
Hope this helps. It turns out we did run a few instruments (no more than 10) a few months ago
with some Gotoh Tuners. Our shipments from both Schaller and Sperzel were
delayed and we did have inventory of some Gotoh keys. So yes, there are a
small number of recently made US G&L Guitars out there with Gotoh keys.
Thanks
Steve

Miles is referring to the pin used on both Schallers and Sperzel to keep each tuner set into the headstock.louis cyfer wrote:?????Miles Smiles wrote:And Spercel tunes are known so far.Hyperborea wrote:I thought that G&L only used Schaller tuners?

Wow, thanks so much for asking about this. I had seen one other of these with Gotoh's on ebay too from another seller. This clears up the mystery.Craig wrote:Okay, I heard back from Steve on those tuners:

Despite the comments above from others about the fixing pin (to prevent rotation of the tuner) versus the set screw, I'm kind of partial to Gotoh tuners over Schaller. That makes this one or the other more interesting to me. If I bought one of these I'd probably pull the tuners in the guitar and drop in the Gotoh 510 lockers but the holes would all match up. I've got Gotoh tuners in a few and they have been incredibly stable and the tuning is really fine.
I've got Schallers in my Godin LGX-3 which is going to be leaving to make room for the Legacy if I buy one or some other Strat like guitar - which the LGX-3 is too. The Schallers are ok but they're heavy and not as precise as the Gotohs. Throw in the fact that the tuner buttons disintegrated over time too. The Godin is going because the neck is just too thin. It was my first really decent guitar but as I've played longer I've come to like thicker necks - the Godin hasn't really been out of it's case in the last 4 years.
Thanks again.
