2015 Fallout Pots - split AND solid shaft

Post by Soundalike »

Hey folks

I’ve just picked up a used 2015 USA Fallout. The knobs are a little curious - one of the pots is very stiff and the other is quite loose, but when I pulled the knobs off I noticed that one is a solid shaft and one is a split shaft. Is this something that would’ve left the factory or has the wiring been modified?

Thanks!

The 2 pots on the Fallout are functionally different pots. The top one is a regular volume control, the bottom is a push-pull tone pot. The bottom knob should click when you pull up or push down on it. When this knob is down the humbucker pickup is working as a normal humbucker, when the knob is pulled up the bottom pickup is split and you get a single coil sound out of it. Your guitar should sound quite different depending on whether the tone knob is up or down.

As you noticed, the 2 capacitors feel quite different and look different because they are different. By the way, the Fallout is a great sounding guitar.

Yes, that is normal. The tone pot is a push/pull pot with the split shaft. The volume pot has a solid shaft.

Here is the wiring diagram for the US Fallout:

Hope this helps.

Thanks! Good to know - the guitar has definitely been modified but I think it’s just the pickguard that got swapped.

This is my first G&L but I’m definitely loving it so far - the neck is just amazing.
