Are all G&L USA built instruments still Plek'd?

Post by Craig »

Yes, all G&L USA built instruments are PLEK'd as part of the build process at the G&L factory in Fullerton, California.

In the COMMON SPECIFICATIONS AND FEATURES section of the U.S. Dealer Price List and our
G&L U.S. Specifications & Options posts in the G&L Specifications and Options sub-forum of the G&L Knowledgebase forum,
you will find this statement:
World-class fretwork finishing including Plek process ensuring the ultimate in player comfort and feel.
In February 2017, G&L changed the "CUSTOM BUILD SPECIFICATIONS" sheet and renamed it the "SPECIFICATIONS" sheet.
They removed the specific PLEK information for each instrument from this updated sheet. This caused some to assume that the
PLEK process was dropped. In addition, on some of the new CLF Research instruments, they mention that the frets were PLEK dressed on
those specification web pages on the main G&L website. So, others assumed that those which specifically mention Plek dressed were the
only ones which are run through the PLEK process.

So, again, yes, all G&L USA built instruments are Plek'd as part of the build process at the G&L factory in Fullerton, California.

I found out recently, that the Fullerton Deluxe models are not Plek dressed.

As of the G&L Custom Shop U.S. Dealer Price List dated June 1, 2022, there is no reference to the Custom Shop using the PLEK machine for building the CS instruments,
therefore, G&L no longer uses the PLEK machine as part of the build process at the G&L factory in Fullerton, California.

From a post on G&L Custom Shop's facebook page (5/6/2024):
Grant working on frets after the Plek machine.
Click the Video link and it will play in a new tab:
Video

This question was posted to this thread:
Is the Plek only available for custom shop builds?

G&L Custom Shop replied:
We plek every standard production and custom shop instrument we build.
So, G&L has redeployed the Plek machine for all standard production and Custom Shop production.

Further discussion on the facebook post (5/11/2024):
fretwork is already done on the imports before we receive them. We'll occasionally do spot levels as needed,
and most of them get the frets finely polished before they reach dealers during the QC and setup process.
The plek machine is how we do the fret leveling for production, so yes we don’t typically put the imports through
unless we find a problem during QC. It's assessed on a case-by-case basis.

A nice summary of G&L's Plek history and current usage, from a facebook post by James Gay (G&L Production Supervisor and Custom Shop Manager) [5/15/2024]:
so we are the first manufacturer to buy a plek machine. Ours is serial number "2". It's the second Plek Pro ever made.
However we didn't buy the machine until the mid-2000's. Not sure the actual date.
The machine was used off and on until 2018, when it was stopped due to lack of training and factory turnover.
I've got 8+ years of plek machine experience and was Joe Glaser's plek guy while I worked for him in 2017,
so I made it a priority to get the machine back up and running after I came on in December of last year.
We've been pleking everything in production again since late February/early March of this year.
