3 Piece Bodies on USA Legacies?

Post by Howenow1 »

Hi Everyone! I'm a newbie, named Dave. So, I bought a 2007 Legacy on Reverb that I'm real happy with. The neck is almost 1.00" at the 12th fret. It wasn't until I got it that I found out the body is a 3 piece. I thought all USA bodies were 2 piece. Can someone fill me in? Thanks! Here she is:

I don't see a post for the 2007 Legacy you bought because Reverb says it has been sold, so I cannot confirm what I think you got.
If you can post photos [front and back], it will help me confirm this:

You probably have a G&L Legacy Standard model which came out in 2006-2008.

While Dave didn't explictly say they used 3 pieces bodies, I know they did from discussions with him about the Fullerton Standard Series when they first
came out. Does it have a body color matching headstock and the G&L Gig Case?

Looking forward to seeing your guitar. :searching:

Ultimately this comes down to supplier inventory. Our body woods are supplied by a local company called Custom Lumber, who also supplies every other guitar brand in the area. As you can imagine, SoCal has a lot of brands around here, some of whom have a bit more weight to throw around.
The amount of wood we buy compared to, say, Fender, is a lot smaller in comparison because our production numbers are significantly smaller than theirs.
As a result of this, sometimes we get the last pick when it comes to wood fulfillment on our orders.

Nearly all our transparent color and natural finish bodies are made with 2-piece blanks today, however we will occasionally use a 3-piece blank if the wood grain is appealing enough and is free of knots.
3 and 4-piece blanks are usually reserved for "paint grade", but those blanks are also typically made from less visually appealing pieces of wood in the first place, so they're automatically paint grade by default.

It's not unheard of to get a guitar out of a 3-piece blank, and it isn't going to negatively affect the overall build of the instrument. Sometimes it comes down to supply chain issues.

Another data tidbit: I have a 1988 Skyhawk from the olden days that has a three-piece maple body (underneath purple solid paint)—I can see from the slight sinking of the finish over the years. Ain't nothing wrong with that guitar!
