Ugly Duckling turns into a Swan

Post by David »

A few years ago I picked up a Strat clone at a used music shop in Nashville. The brand name is RAZOR. Never heard of a RAZOR before or since. Got it for $50. Plywood body, horrible electronics, but a pretty nice playing neck. I bought it keep in my office at work - and during the hours long conference calls I'm frequently on, I'd put the phone on mute and play.

One of the bands I'm playing in now requires 4 guitars (tuned to standard, tuned down a half-step to Eb, tuned to open E, & tuned to open Ab). I have 3 decent electrics but needed a 4th. I had a brainstorm and did a little surgery on the $50 plywood Strat and installed a Gotoh dual blade I'd pulled out of the bridge PUP on a Legacy Special into the neck PUP slot on the $50 guitar. I raised the action just a bit and used it as my open Ab guitar (I need this guitar for 1 song - Let's Give Them Something To Talk About by Bonnie Raitt). This guitar now SCREAMS with tone. Its a real killer. Wow. Love it love it love it. I just have to make sure I never accidentally hit the toggle switch and turn on the other two horrid pickups that are in that guitar.

I'm playing in two bands right now, fronted by these two singers.....

Both are very different, but both are a lot of fun cause I get to play with some really great musicians.
