Monday LR - June 24,

Post by Elwood »

Howdy All,
I'm looking forward to be your midday mealtime musical entertainment .

Today's theme : Alter Egos

First a little music if you want:

I finally got my '86 blondie ASAT back from my drummer and dressed the frets ,polished the neck, and put on some
TI power brights that I got a deal on . They are the very light .008-.040 set. I got a deal on a handful of sets so
I thought I'd give it a shot. It takes a little more finesse to keep them in line...I enjoy a challenge and it keeps things interesting.

Well that gave me the ASAT bug and my '85 blackie needed some TLC .
This one has had the pickups changed out for 70's barts, a D-tuner added ...and is BLACK ;)
Quite the opposite of the '86. With the D-tuner I figured I'd go with a heavy bottom.
The top d,g,b,and e are from a .009 set , the low e and a are from heavy set.

Here's the proof of it's existence 8-)

I plan on getting a black crinkle guard and putting some good ol' black MFD's back at some point.
These bartolini's give it a dark compressed tone with attitude. ( I've yet to intonate and dial her in , I'll give y'all a tone report once I get there.)

Image

Here's a shot of the '86 and my good friend ; my 'Amigo' . This amp sounds great with whatever I throw at it.
Even with a couple 8's is puts out a great round bottom for bass. She breaks up a harp tone at just the right point
( almost right away ). And is just creamy goodness for clean guitar , especially if you love tremelo.

Image

And a shot with Blackie...

Image

I scored a new (old) amp this spring. I was thrilled to find it. Though it hasn't been smooth sailing ...but things look promising
and she should be singing soon.

Image

Ain't that cool? !!

It's the 'TWEN' model . It has a 12" speaker (frozen voice coil...but there's an aux spkr out for now  )
Grundig !?! reverb (didn't they supply mercedes with radios?)... and gritty pots in need of cleaning, the retentionpins need retensioning....etc. but it passes signal and I can hear the reverb 'tinging' so there's hope.
I'm still very thrilled about my find . Those guys at Dynacord design lab must have been fun (and funny) .
Just look at that bold lava red against the black compared to the 'Amigo's laid back sorta cloud 9 feel.

To round out the picture porn-mutations,
...

Image

...and both ASAT's

Image

The common thread in the picture sets was another cool thing that is new to me. This old strap is from Dale H.'s
collection. The seller sold two on ebay , was anyone here the buyer of the second one sold?
Can I still call myself vegan if I'm buying leather and sheepskin  ?
(I won't do it again.)

Image

And here's a Bonus question ...with a possible prize for the first to come up with the solution.

How did Dale attach his guitars at the butt end ? Did he use the beaner on the strap ?
Anyone have any picture of Dale playing that might show the strap and holder?

Do you have any cool contrasting G&L's ? Visually or Tone-wise
Or any other Evil Twin sorta thing goin' on in your creative life ?

Sorta G&L question: Did anyone notice the MusicMan guitar on The Colbert Report last week?
The guy didn't do much with it , but it was nice to see it hanging there anyways

Non G&L question: Have you found any cool rocks lately? ...let's see a picture !!
I've found a couple neat ones ...I'll get pics up soon.

I better hit submit ...I'll check back soon ,
Many dry and warm thoughts to anyone up north dealing with way too much water , the pictures on the news
are pretty frightening.

Great LR Elwood! Mark is one of my favorites, probably the most underrated guitar player their is, great clip.

Cool amps but the Dynacord takes the prize right down to the pop rivets on the voltage selector switch. Can you get the frozen voice coil rewound? All you pictures are superb and some interesting stuff. The amp looks well built. Where is it mad as the faceplate is kind of different.

No idea on the guitar strap. is that a metal d ring on the end?

We have had unbelievable weather. It was cool all spring until a week ago, It got hot and humid and the storms and rain set in. We lost power for 14 hours on Friday night and Ginny and I spent the whole night scooping water from the sump tank to prevent the basement from flooding. We were successful but no sleep and gigs both Saturday and Sunday has left me tired. We didn't loose any trees but many of the neighbors did. I have heard chain saws running a lot today. Looking forward to the rest of the week!-- Darwin

Those are some pretty cool looking amps Elwood, definite cool vibe going on there. I have not run across that brand, I would like to hear them in action ! Good choice with Mr Knofler, the man can play.

I too have no idea about the strap ( it looks like it would get hot )

I like ASAT's just fine but have yet to have an urge or gas to want to get one. I really like the SC body style. Actually , come to think of it an ASAT special I would consider.

Lots of rain here, everyone complains but June is usually pretty lousy in this part of the world. Summer won't really get going until the middle of July as it always does. Lots of flooding in the eastern part of the province and southern Alberta. No fun for those people.

Very nice pair of amps, Elwood. Love the pic of the Amigo with the blond ASAT. I'd love to hear them.

As for contrasting G&Ls, tonally I really like having the Korina Jr and a Classic. The added girth of the Jr's sound helps it "bring the rawk", and the snappy Classic does everything else.

Here's a couple cool rocks as promised .
My mom found this one , a huge chunk of Agate maybe ?

Image

...and this one is looks like an ostrich egg that is trying to blend in with the avacado's.
I thought the outer layer might be paint because it's so green, but it's rock hard .
I might have to buy a tile saw someday and make some bookends .

Did I mention it seems reelly heavy...so it's not a thunder egg (geode), or if it is it's a dense one.
Those are cool !!

I'm currently setting up a camera to see how it does with video. I'll record the audio seperate and sync it post, so soon I should be able to uploads clips at whim.

I'm building several guitars with Limba, that's some cool wood . I'd like to hear that Jr.

Ya...what were they thinking??
I didn't mention the Amigo weighs maybe 15 lbs, the Twen must weigh over 40 !
I'll borrow a scale today.

Elwood,

A late reply, but a reply none the less.
My midday mealtime musical entertainment yesterday was Andres Segovia Spanish Guitar Magic - or something like that...

Those are some sweet looking amps. Dig that red tolex.
And neat guitar strap. Don't sweat it too much, I won't report you into the Vegan Police.

The Scott Pilgrim movie is worth it just for the scenes with the Super Vegans!

no worries...I'm watching this as I prepare today's agenda.
It's good so far ( I'm a third the way through ).
So far the best quote is " I think we last played this when we had hair "

Really good camera work and direction overall. I enjoyed that clip too, they seemed to make sure it was clear to the guitarists watching just what he's doing.
Much easier than playing the LP at half speed ; remember when record players had a 16 2/3 rpm setting? (Steve Martin mentioned that was how he learned the banjo ,I know he's not the only one)

I'm behind schedule...and the tues LR is late...feeling a bit like the Mad Hatter

cheers
