My first Tribute: Comanche

Post by Miles Smiles »

Last week, I got a Comanche, it's a used one. It's my 10th entry in the registry, but the first Tribute at all. Build in 2008, but not played a lot. At first I noticed, it did not stay in tune, when the vibrato system was used. So I changed the nut and the string tree. Now it works perfectly. Last band rehersal I used it mostly, although it's not a light weight having 8.8 lbs (4 kg), but I eventually use my S-500 too, which weights 10.1 lbs too, so weight isn't a problem (yet). ;-)

I also had a look behind the pick guard and didn't see anything to change for first. The 5-way switch isn't the old style built, but it also does not look cheap. I noticed there's a 2nd capacitor on the bass blend, which goes right to ground and after I made some experiments with another partscaster, I now know this one is a permanently treble cut, so I wonder how it would sound without.

I pulled out a tuning machine and noticed, they are not compatible with Schaller oder Sperzel, as the have two pins.

The tremolo arm has been to long on the short side. I compared it to the arm of my 1997 Legacy and I did shorten it a bit, cause it was too far away from the body.

And how it looks:

Here are some more pictures and available at HD too: http://i.wuell.net/gallery/view_album.p ... teComanche

A sound example, not perfectly played, but...
First part is with the neck pick up and the second with the one on the bridge

Did I really put this into porn? Thought it had it put into "Let's talk G&L Products". :?:

Anyway, so there's one to fit the expectations:

I have one just like this and it is easily one of my favorite guitars. These are such versatile guitars. The variety of tones is nothing short of amazing. But they aren't for everybody. I think that is because it has such a clear fat tone. Sloppy playing is exposed for all to hear. I haven't had any tuning problems with mine, in fact it holds tune amazingly well. I have found that true with the other tributes as well that I have bought. I only had one issue with my comanche and that was in the saddles. It had a funny buzz that was just coming off the high e string. Maybe it was the string angle...just not sure. Getting some stainless saddles from Guitarfetish cured that issue. Congratulations on a great new guitar. Just one thing.....I think you new Comanche needs a hair cut!

Yes, thanks, got it right after the pictures were made, just had to go for the side cutter. ;-)

When I got it, there were a brand new string set in the range of .010-.052 installed. I changed it to my strings which are .011-.049. So both sets have strings wider than what may be installed by the factory. Probably some work on the original nut would have helped too, but as I already had the Graph-Tech nut and the string tree at home, I decided to use these.

Regarding the fat tone: That's where the bass blend could go into action. :)

Thanks for your comment. :-)

I made a little correction to it, in terms just at the "Spanish" part, so there are maybe less "not so nice lines" in there now. :D

Holy smokes
What is that s500 made of to weight 10.1 lbs?

The arm bar on my S500 will hit the 5-way switch when set to the middle. A little longer on the short side.

Some kind of ash, I guess:

Still far enough away from the switch, on all my DF-guitars.

No, I moved it and left a link in the Let's talk G&L Products sub-forum, so it's essentially in both sub-forums.

Thanks for posting - the photos are great.

OK, thanks, you'r welcome. :)

The link in the starting post to my gallery was broken, I modified it, now it's working. As always, you may click on the middle sized image to get the large one, here again: http://i.wuell.net/gallery/view_album.p ... teComanche

I for sure will eventually have a photo day again and there will be some more photos then. Also better ones of the S-500 and SC-2.

My guess would be maple, the northern ash I have seen has a bit more 'curl' to it's figure.
Either way that's a beauty of an S-500...I bet there's a nice snap to it's attack.

Hey Miles. Beautiful Tribby!

Enjoyed your clips. Thanks so much.

Love the "vintage" S-500. Looks like maple to me too. And that's a good thing. A VERY good thing! - ed
