Lunch Report- Friday Feb 15, 2013 – Happy Asteroid Day!

An asteroid the size of a football field or a semi truck or something huge is due to fly by earth today at a distance of 17,200 miles. This is a virtual gnat’s whisker, in terms of space distances, but as they say it’s the ones you don’t see coming that are going to hurt you! I hope it doesn't take out my Direct TV!

Lunch- I brought a tuna fish sandwich, a couple of mini tangerines and an iced tea.

Today’s Report:
I found my camera cable and uploaded a bunch of photos to photobucket so I can illustrate more of what I have been talking about.

It has been fun to again be your Lunch Reporter this week. I hope I have interested and educated some of you on some topics that you don’t normally see covered in this amount of detail. It is also very nice to pass the torch without having to worry about nominating anyone for this job. I do recommend it if you haven’t done the LR yet. The effects pedals are always nice.
1971 Precision Bass neck- Rod replacement

The rod replacement entails cutting the first fret fingerboard between the nut and first fret to find the stop nut that the rod screws into. I had to thread the new rod with 10/32 threads and insert it into the neck and thread the rod into the found stop nut. I first had to cut off the stop nut supplied with the rod as it was too big for the neck.

After I installed the rod and attached the adjusting nut, I installed tuners and a temporary nut, via a thin bolt across the nut slot serves that purpose. I put the neck on a bass body and strung it up and let it sit overnight.

The next day, the rod was holding true and I determined that the neck was fixed.
I am now working on the cosmetic part of restoring the fingerboard and installing the first fret and a new nut.

Its been good having you do the LR's Bassman. I like the new volunteer system too.

I'm eager to see your pics , how about a link to your photob. album ?
You'll have to try the 'timage' tabs that allows resizing the picture so it'll be within this sites guidelines.
It takes a little trial and error and good guessing to get the length/width right...but if you know the ratio
your pics were shot at it get's pretty intuitive.

Unfortunately my pictures are too big for this board. I never ran into this problem before, but it is putting a damper on my completion of this report.

I have pictures of most of this and I will try to post them if I can reduce the size of them.

Bill, I first had this issue after we went up on the new system and I use the Timage= to work around it.

I have enjoyed you posts on the truss rod issue and researched the links that you provided. I wouldn't be at all afraid to do this repair. What have you to lose? It appears that you are home free on this one. My John Mayer neck had a big bow when I bought it new. I had it steamed for $20 and that was 16 months ago. Some washers on the rod and It is now set up very well and not going to be made in to a baritone.

As for the Asteroid, I am hoping for a miss. I still have money on a gift card for Big Louies which Ginny and I plan on using this afternoon. It would bum me out if we checked out leaving an unused gift card. I wouldn't want to have to decide on one guitar to take along either! Thanks for the interesting week!-- Darwin

bassman, you know that you don't need the cable to move the pictures from the camera to the computer? just take out the memory card and plug it into the card reader. most computer have card readers, if not, you can get one for less than 10 bucks. much faster transfer than through the cable.

I had a few minutes and thought I'd give this a try...
I guessed the ratio to be 3:4, looked good...so I changed the dimensions to 1000x750 for the horizontally
oriented pics and 750x1000 for the 2 pics that are vertical.

Thanks for the good pics...how nice is the digital world that we can do this without going to the drugstore and waiting a week to get our film back

Good job Louis.
I thought I was looking through a crystal ball, but Elwood fix it.

Is it mostly Basses that have truss rod issues? Are they more prone to it?

I was having a bad day, Friday, and i wasn't focused on aspect ratios of my pictures.
Thanks, for the help, Louis and Elwood.

Basses obviously have longer truss rods and I don't know if they have more problems than guitars. I suspect that if I collected more guitars I would see more rod problems with them.

My theory is that most truss rod issues are caused by someone going too far in their rod adjustment.

I also think that you can get a stubborn piece of wood that won't cooperate and the rod is not enough to counter the warp tendencies of the wood, but that occurs far less often.
