ASAT set up for Jazz

Post by keith7940236 »

Is there a recommended set up for a Jazz ASAT ala Ted Green? Is is possible to use 12's or 13's or does the neck need special reinforcement?
I'd really appreciate any input as I have never played a solid body. My Jazz instructor suggested that I look at a "Tele/ASAT" style of guitar.

Thanks,
Keith

the #1 neck should have no problem handling 12's or 13's. #3 and #4 are a bit wider, a little more room for chords if you have a big hand. i like the asat special, but a bluesboy with the neck humbucker is also a popular choice.

Ted Greene himself recommended 11's for an ASAT. Go to 2:30 for the string discussion:

The ASAT in the video is probably an '88, judging by the black tuners and the plastic string tree near the D tuner. The necks on these were quite a bit thinner than they tend to be on a lot of recent G&Ls.

I've been using 10s on all of my G&Ls. I took my '98 ASAT Classic (with a BEM #2 neck) up to 12s, and it really didn't like the extra tension.

i would certainly agree that the older g&l's wouldn't like the higher tension as well as a bem. but a nice current quartersawn #1 or #4 neck should have no problem handling them.
