First GAS purchase of 2012
Hello there! I haven't posted much lately but still lurk almost daily. I hope everyone is doing well, work has been hectic lately and my home laptop is dying a slow slow death. Even now as I type a 1/4 of my screen is a mix of black and rainbow
so if there are strange mistakes it's probably because I can't see them.
Anyway on to the topic, just scored an amazing deal on a pair of vintage speaker cabs. Specifically I was after a '65 Bandmaster 2x12 cab someone had listed on craigslist. He was the original owner and it was in great shape for it's age, plus it is the other half to my '66 Bandmaster head. He had the larger '68 bandmaster cab as well and the price for both was one I couldn't refuse. The '65 has one original Jensen C12N(1965) and a 1968 Oxford (which I'm almost positive came out of the '68 cab which was loaded with 2 EV SRO's. Both sound great and came with the original victoria luggage covers. I will eventually sell the larger cab it's just too big for my needs and selling it should cover what I spent on both. But a great start to 2012 I've been looking for the matching cab for my bandmaster (at a reasonable price) for a few years now. Also on the radar right now is a 6g9a blonde Tremolux (also on the GAS list for a few years), one popped up locally, I had worked out a deal to trade for it but it fell through, still up for sale though so I have hope.
Here is a pic of my current "wall of sound"
What are some your 2012 purchases thus far?

Dave, a couple of great scores. I really dislike the word sell although I know that it is necessary at times. It would be great if you could keep both of them. Clean originals are hard to find. -- Darwin

Re: First GAS purchase of 2012
Dave,
It's great to see you back. Those were a nice score. Any sound reports/audio clips coming?
I've had an active GAS year so far. My goal was to limit myself to no more than four guitars for the year, and for those only to be from my "must buy if found" list. I blew that one right out of the gate, when I finally hooked up with a good guitarist in January and realized I needed to pick up a new bass. The Fender hybrid I had cobbled together in the early 80s has too much sentimental value to risk loss or damage.
The bass binge started with a rescue off eBay. Somebody had spray painted an early L-1000 and put it back together before the paint was dry, and it seemed in danger of being parted out. I picked it up for an unreasonably low price, thinking it would take a major restoration. The damage has all turned out to be reversible (except for needing to be refinished), so this will soon be a favorite player for me.
The second was also supposed to be a rescue, this time from Guitar Center. It's an '81 L-2000 Series E. The store got it as a return and thought it was unplayable. It also had the word "funk" carved into the finish. I got this one for the same price as the L-1000, and it turned out just to need a new set of strings (the ones that came on it didn't pull any relief into the neck). It is the best bass I've ever played. I might look into having the finish damage repaired, but I actually don't mind it too much.
The third will be the subject of a New Bass Day report in a couple of minutes...

Welcome back Dave! And indeed some nice scores.
My story for 2012 is similar to Ken's in that I'm always on the look-out for the 'must-haves'. But I have been able to keep myself in check (relatively speaking ). So far 'only' a:
Korina Collection ASAT Bluesboy,
ASAT Classic 'S' from the '07 Special Build run
and a pristine ASAT Classic Commemorative Edition with maple fingerboard have been added.

Thanks for making me feel a lot less guilty about my purchases. Especially considering the NGD thread I will be posting in a couple of days...

Re: First GAS purchase of 2012
Nice score Dave It'd be a shame to sell it - bigger is better . Plus it looks like you still have a bit of space in that room for more speaker bins!
Jos - the Classic S is a beauty. Love the tweed case!
We recently cancelled our winter holiday plans, leaving me with a bit of spending money. I've picked up two visually interesting Australian made, hand-wired amps for very good prices in the last month. First was a Sherlock Vintage Reverb 30, with two British made Celestion Greenbacks in it.
Second was this 85lb monster from 1975. Made in the suburb I currently live in by defunct local company EMINAR, 100W from four 6L6GC's. Tube driven reverb and tremolo. The speakers, made by another defunct local company Nessel, look like JBL knock-offs (aluminium dustcaps, red frames) and sound damn good. Its about as painfully loud as you'd expect it to be.
And just this week I picked up a couple of Way Huge pedals - the Pork Loin overdrive and a Swollen Pickle fuzz, both are nice sounding pieces of kit.

Ken, this forum is supposed to be a support group for G&L aficionados isn't it? So lets go around the circle now:KenC wrote:Jos,yowhatsshakin wrote: But I have been able to keep myself in check (relatively speaking ).

Thanks Jamie! And I will use this opportunity again to encourage G&L to add them back to their online store offerings ... Hint ... Hint ...blargfromouterspace wrote:Jos - the Classic S is a beauty. Love the tweed case!

That too! First thing it's getting is castors. Until then, it stays where it is. My house has the front door on the side of the house, and the path is only about a meter wide between the walls of the house and the old splintery wooden fence. The handles are on the side of the amp, meaning I have to walk sideways to get it to the caryowhatsshakin wrote:Painfully loud as it is to tote around you mean

Re: First GAS purchase of 2012
Thanks guys!
Darwin, I also dislike the word sell, but the current arrangement is if I sell(there it is again!) out of my collection I can keep 100% to go back into said collection. So far this is working well, I must be making good deals because it's growing
I did say eventually so I'll still enjoy it for a while
Ken, I saw your basses in your lunch reports all great finds, glad to hear it was just the strings on that L-2000, looking forward to the NBD report
Jos, as always, all three of those are great, love the tweed case with the classic S, and that binding/finish on the commemorative is stunning.
Jamie, I really dig the blue tolex on that Sherlock! the Eminar looks interesting as well, I think I would like the slider controls. Speaking of heavy...that big cab is an absolute monster to move and for some reason the previous owner bolted the small (easily movable) cab to a furniture dolly but left the huge one alone
Scott, that Comanche is gorgeous, I would not have been able to resist it either

Re: First GAS purchase of 2012
Two great looking guitars Gabe, I have an ASAT with a similar color scheme to your tele.
Took the back off of the big cab tonight and got a nice surprise
These two guys were in there
The guy did say there were EV SRO's in there but he also said the small cab had both it's original Jensen's(close but not quite), so I was expecting EVM 12L's at best. From what I've read these "coffee can" Ev's are supposed to be excellent, other than the fact they weigh 19lbs each. Now I just need to sort out his wiring, they were wired up with old 16ga stereo wire and duct tape and I'm pretty sure only one was hooked up when I tested it out yesterday as the output jack tested 8ohms (should have been 4 or 16 if they were both connected) That is going to be a crazy loud cabinet.
I really need to get sound clips up for a few things, what are you guys using to host your sound clips?
Thanks,
Dave

Awesome score.
Yeah those EVs are heavy. I don't have the SRO but from what I read on the boards, they are really nice.
You should keep them, forget getting originals.

Just picked this up off ebay a few months ago. 20 year-old 3-bolt, bone stock in near mint condition. My first ASAT/Tele – ever. If this belonged to someone on this forum – thank you, I love it. Not sure it was exactly a GAS purchase but I did get pretty excited once I made the decision to get an ASAT and started actively looking for one.
