Last Day Of Winter Lunch Report 3-19-2012

Lunch today will be leftover Corn Beef and Cabbage which I made on Saturday. I am not Irish but acted like it on Saturday night.

I am honored to be this weeks LR thanks to Dave and it has been just under a year since my last time as LR. Most of you are familiar with me but I am retired, live in St. Paul Mn and will be 69 next month and am passionate about guitars. Today is the last full day of winter. first want to mention the weather as today will be our 8 TH record breaking temperature in the last 10 days. The average temp for this time of the year is in the low 40's. It was 80 over the weekend and is going to 75 today. The humidifier in the living room has not run for a week. I keep the humidity at 40% in the winter and this morning it was at 50%. Here is a reminder of what it was like just over 2 weeks ago



Non G&L topic today is tribute bands. The Shadows, Bobby Vees original band is still doing tribute shows. The only original member left is Dick Dunkirk and he has been doing these shows in Iowa, Mn and the Dakotas for some time. They do a show based on the last night at the Surf Ballroom. They feature Buddy Holly, Big Bopper,Roy Orbison and Patsy Cline tributes. The people doing these are perfect and sometimes better than the originals. Kelly, my bandmate does the Patsy line act and is killer. I attended one of their shows last Saturday evening and it was terrific. I knew that they had been selling out and adding second shows but what surprised me was the audience. Many are my age and older, some younger folks and they really love this stuff. I honestly didn't know that there was such a demand for this stuff. They asked me to sit in a couple of tunes with them on bass even after I had been sampling a few Grain Belt Nordeasts! It was a blast. Old Rock and Roll is not dead I can assure you. The question is: what do you think of tribute bands and what have you seen. Remember the folks they are doing tributes have to no longer be with us.

G&L Question today is: Will you post a picture of you favorite "looking" G&Ls. You know that I look at these babies as a works of art. There are some awesome candidates on this forum so let get 'em in everyone's face to start the week off and get the juices flowing.

Ginny is on vacation in California this week so I do not have the camera. I have plenty of material to bore you with and just a warning that Wednesday will be Lowenders day, so you bass dudes, get your guns loaded. We had no shoveable amount of snow all year!!!! I do kinda miss the snow but I sure don't miss getting my butt out there in the cold morning air to clear the driveway.

Your Rock & Roll Tribute shows sounds like the "Whatever Happened To" festival we had every year during the Balloon Fest in Mississippi. While you did get bands with one one original member we also got folks like Alex Chilton (who looked none to happy about having to sing The Letter and like he really wanted to be somewhere else), Felix Cavaliere( who pumped out Good Lovin' on the Hammond B3 like it was still the mid-1960s) and Mark Lindsay (who prefaced every song by telling us where it placed on the charts). Now exactly how long ago was that Mark?

I will leave the beautious G&L pics to others. I think all guitars are gorgeous.

Last day of winter? Dang, it's been close to 80 the past few days. We had a very mild winter and it looks like we'll be skipping spring and going straight to summer.

I saw a low budget Elvis tribute at a redneck bar some years ago. It was a hot summer day and I was trying to stay hydrated with Pabst Blue Ribbon....but what I remember was some good, clean fun.
The other tribute band deviates from your rules a bit cuz the original band isn't dead yet. Although Phil Collins is just a shell of his former self. Genesis tribute band The Musical Box has been doing faithful recreations of old Gabriel era Genesis tours. They recreate the light show, costumes, old analog synths, etc. Highly recommended to any of you prog-heads out there in G&L land.

Sorry but I don't have any G&L pictures handy. Not like I have a lot to offer anyway from my meager collection. Does 3 guitars constitute a collection? My S500 with blonde looks nicer in person then than in pictures. Same with my SB2. The Bordeaux Red Metallic finish has some nice subtle glitter that I haven't been able to capture in photos.

for the deadheads out there, The Dark Star Orchestra is a treat.
I loved playing bass in the Hendrix tribute band, our guitarist knew what he was doing
(at least onstage) . I hear Rain is a good show for Beatles fans, haven't seen them yet.

It'll be good to hear your music.

Here's my favorite , I'm tempted to put a velvet hammer 54 in the neck position .

We had 6 or 7 inches of snow yesterday and today. Now the wind is blowing like 50 mph. This the most open winter I have ever experienced in MT, that is for sure.


Tribute bands. It's funny you should mention them today. While taking my daughter to daycare, I saw an advertisement for a Journey tribute band. Yea, you read that right, a tribute to Journey. Would anybody pay to see Journey? Let alone a tribute. Actually, I have seen Journey, but I didn't buy the ticket...

Hi Darwin, Nice start to the week. It's 85 today here in Ohio. I'm loving it. The only tribute band experience I have was seeing a Kiss tribute band many years ago. It was pretty cheesy seeing guys dressed up like Kiss in cheap spandex costumes with the beer gut.

Here's my '85 Invader I restored last year. It was originally yellow, but spray painted black by the previous owner. I stripped it down and started over. Nothing beats the MFD pickups!

wow, is that body shape available? perfection. a larger cutaway for the lower bout for better access, body countours, trem, i am in love. only mfd's (maybe 3) could improve on this. funny, you posted it a s a visiual eye candy, and i see a functional piece of perfection. the stripes and split fingerboard look nice, but i could take it or leave it, the busrts on the back of the neck is awesome. if there was a g&l i could choose this would be it. with the asat special deluxe style controls though, those pots are too far for me.

I actually have never seen a pure tribute band.... there are a few that come through town every now and then (an AC/DC one and an Aerosmith one) but i have yet to check them out.

I couldn't decide on a favourite. So i went with Classy, Sparkly and a Red one

...or maybe an ASATCeptor , yes the cutaway is deeper...I only polished frets and changed strings,
but I'm considering some pickup swapping .
There are a few others similar to it , I'd loved to have seen the G&L shop in the winter of 1990,
someone was coming up with some very cool and usable ideas.

Great start to the week, Darwin! We just got a new camera yesterday, so this was the perfect excuse to try it out. I couldn't narrow it down to a single favorite guitar, so I'll go with my favorite in each color. Hopefully nobody will mind!

The only tribute band I remember seeing did a dead-on recreation of a Queen show in Cincinnati about three years ago. Every member looked and played their part perfectly. I think they were from Britain, and were on a tour of the US.

Hey Darwin,

In my teenage days, there were a lot of tribute bands playing the local bars of my old stomping grounds. Strangely enough, most of the bands they were paying 'tribute' to, I wouldn't even remember the name from. May be with the exception of the Status Quo tribute band. They would all fall into that bucket of tribute bands, i.e.playing their music as close to the original as possible, but it is still weird to realize that most if not all bands covered were still in existence in these days and creating new hits. Guess the distinction between cover nband and tribute band was wafer thin in those days.

I hardly ever go to tribute band show anymore although I was immensely impresses with the Seattle Rock Orchestra when they did their 'Night of the Opera' show with pre-Night songs before the break and an in order rendition of Queen's classic after the break. Amazing stuff.
