Sho' 'nough, It's Monday the 13th
Hello fellow G&L guitar aficionados, rock & rollers, blues stringers, music nuts, collectors of fine instruments, and all around OK folk. I am Jeremy from Helena MT, this is my second go as the lunch reporter. I really enjoy reading the guided musings on here. Thanks to Zombywoof for the nod; the last few lunch reporters have done an especially great job—I loved the stuff last week—the SC day was amazing—the cool old gear is really interesting to me, as I know almost nothing about it and learning a little provides some context to stuff that was going on in the early days of electrified guitar.
Lunch today is a couple of apples and whatever else I can grab on the run.
I am going to have an atypical week schedule-wise. My kid sister, who I am very close too, is getting married next Sunday. In my house. So that will play into my reports the rest of the week! I think I should be able to get on frequently and see what's happening--except maybe tomorrow, I might be on the road tomorrow, which means an early report.
I am a guitar nut, and most of my favorite acts are guitar driven country, blues, and rock & roll. But I have a few favorites that are not guitar centric. Here's a guy I love, be sure to stick around for the second song it's one of his best:

Hit us with your favorite acts, that aren't guitar centric, and could, just maybe, use some help from a G&L picker. Could you help 'em out? Would you want to?
G&L question: We have seen a ton of pictures and descriptions of others guitars in lunch reports lately. Which one would you most like to get your hands on for a test drive? It's hard to narrow down, but I would go with Jos's (yowhatshakin) '07 Trinity he shared last week. I have never played a Trinity, but the concept is really appealing to me.
Sorry for the late short report-it's one of those days. But tomorrow.......

Funny but I am more driven by voices and words than guitars - Warren Zevon, Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Tom Russell, and the like.
Some of my favorites:
Gene Clark & Carla Olson

Dave Alvin
http://youtu.be/mLRAbEyvyuU
The G&L I would love ot get my hands on - even if for a little bit. I know at least one of the guys here has one - The ASAT JD-5.

Your list of artists is right up my ally. I saw Lucinda last summer at a blues festival in Portland, OR. She killed! She coulda used a G&L player, though. Her guitar player was a talented player. But he sounded like he was getting paid by the note--and he had at least 1000 zany effects. To me, it kinda distracted from the tight song writing and dynamic vocals.
Thanks for the post!

Sho' nuff Jeremy, great to have you this week. You are from Gibson country! Had a great leftover beef stew from yesterday for lunch.
I was born on country and Don Williams is truly one of the best. I really like old country and have never been able to get into the new stuff.
I would like to test drive any one of Jos beauties. He has some keepers. I would like to test drive one of Will Rays guitars. It would be sweet to feel something that has been played by him. JJ is also one of my favorites and I would love to own a JJ Asat. Unfortunately they are hard to find. In trying different guitars, we sometimes find one that really feels right. The Hamer Newport I recently picked up is one of those. It has an outstanding feel and the playability is great, although the scale is a bit different than I am used to. I am guilty of not listening to the words of songs but rather the instrumentation. I would not make a songwriter! --Darwin

Hey Jeremy, nice to see you around more often these last couple of weeks. Really enjoyed the Don Williams clip. One of my fave non-guitar head musicians is Joe Ely - great voice and his sound and style are both very distinctive.

Hope the wedding planning is going smoothly and she's not being too much of a bridezilla. You must have a nice property if she's choosing to get married there
I'd love to get my hands on an old SC2, or a JD-5 would be nice too, if for no other reason than to see what the switching is like first hand. There are many times I've contemplated rewiring an ASAT to JD specs.

The MT gibson 'factory' is acoustic only. I go to the show room, and the sound of acoustic guitars that look identical or very similar varies quite a bit.
And, there was a jj for sale on the bay last week. I haven't been on to see if it's still there.

ZW - The Gene Clark thing is awesome. I might have to revisit the Byrds...I don't know much about them.
Jamie - Great clip. I am not familiar but I really like the song. Will check out more Joe. On the wedding - the venue has more to do with the time frame than the quality of the property! More later in week...
Also I read about the wiring on the JD-5. And it is interesting....should be straight forward to try.

one of my non guitar driven favorites is too $hort. i did not think i would find it on youtube as it has never gotten radio play, but here it goes. i would say it is lyric driven. it gets pretty harsh, but there are some very clever rhymes in there.

Hey Jeremy,
Scott
I have a soft spot for Gwen.... and yes i could and would like to be in the back line with my G&L!sickbutnottired wrote: Hit us with your favorite acts, that aren't guitar centric, and could, just maybe, use some help from a G&L picker. Could you help 'em out? Would you want to?
I am going to go with Darwin's Z3 w/ bigsby.... I have yet to play a Z3 and i am seriously GASing for a G&L with a Bigsby, so for me thats a no brainer.sickbutnottired wrote: G&L question: Which one would you most like to get your hands on for a test drive?

Louis, that's music from my formative years. That's how come I had to start playing guitar!! I know you're committed to guitar, but you gotta get out. LOL.
Scott - I like gwen, and she could use some of your tonal sensibilities. Hopefully you send post cards from the backline. Darwin's z-3 is enticing, but I am not up to speed on normal pickups.
Ed - I don't know much Tull, but yea. Flute rock, rocks. He seriously get's a hold of that thing.
Darwin - We were on a roll, too.....

Jeremy,
I love Don Williams.......as opposed to guitar-driven Don Williams is voice-driven.
I like Merle Haggard also, another voice-driven musician. Speaking of the newer country music (Darwin), everyone seems to use pitch correction to a robotic level. It gets as unnatural sounding as Alvin and the Chipmunks.......and 90% of these guys are riding on Merle Haggard but the Country world still gives all of the credit to Hank Williams.
There have been a lot of beautiful guitars posted on this forum. Jos has a private museum. Many I would want just because they are such fine examples of a guitar. But here is a guitar I would like to test drive. I also have a sentimental spot reserved for the vintage white and cream color scheme. It has to do with when I was first exposed to guitars and very impressionable. I love the amp knobs. They set this off perfectly. This is member Steve L's Trinity:
My non-guitar-driven favorites are Peter Gabriel (here with Paula Cole) and Sarah McLachlan (there are toneful guitars contributing to this one but melody, lyrics and vocals dominate in her music):

Knock it off guys! You all make me blush
So today I'll contribute in picture the models mentioned.
The red Trinity specially built for Bob Page for Jeremy:
The John Jorgenson Signature for Darwin:
And the JD-5 for Jaimie and Woof:
Lucinda Williams was mentioned in earlier posts. I have always loved her former guitar player Doug Pettibone for his amazing tone and licks. And her current guitar player is the 25 year old (or maybe 26 by now) Blake Mills. Check him out with a Lucinda Williams cover for the Voice Project:

and his work in 'Simon Dawes', the precursor of one of my current fave bands: 'Dawes'.
One of my fave non-guitar driven artists has always been the inimitable Kate Bush (who actually does the original female vocals on Peter Gabriels 'Don't Give Up' on 'So'). A lot of female artists (think Tori Amos and the like) would never had a chance in the business without the groundbreaking contributions of this British artist. Lately albums have been released far and in between, although she released 2 albums last year after an hiatus of 6 years. But could she use a G&L picker? Not so sure ... Whereas early in her career she used the great (and since deceased) Alan 'Murph' Murphy (also known for his later work with 'Go West' and 'Level 42') who might have been great on an G&L, she has since evolved in a more piano and orchestration kind mode a la Joni Mitchell and her collaboration with Vince Mendoza.

I'm a big fan of keyboardists Neil Larson and Bob James in the smooth jazz genre. Of course Neil works with Buzzy Feiten, James with Larry Carlton, who could become a great player if he'd get some more chops. LOL!
There are so many people I like, it would be impossible to list them all.
