Anyone else having wiring/horrible noise issues?

The place to discuss, post photos, video, and audio of the G&L products (US instruments, stomp boxes, etc.) produced after 1991, including the amps & gear we use with them.

Anyone else having wiring/horrible noise issues?

Post by oaklee151 »

Greetings fellow George and Leo enthusiasts,

My most recent acquisition, a gorgeous spalted maple legacy from the 2008 run, is having (much to my dismay) significant wiring issues that are resulting in a very loud, very abrasive noise.

I think the issue might have something to do with the push/pull tone pot because when I mess with that the noise will go away/come back. However, I can also just firmly tap the pickguard near the pot with my finger and the noise will either cease or return. I know single coils hum and all but this is really unsettling!

I'm not asking for advice on what to do. I know the answer to that - bring it to a tech. But has anyone else experienced these types of issues on relatively new, mostly unplayed G&Ls? Normally they play great right out of the case so it was in some ways shocking to me that this custom shop, limited run guitar is having such a noisy problem.

I should add that when it works, it works great! in positions 2 and 4 it "bucks the hum" like it should. However when the noise problem is happening it can be heard regardless of what position the pickup selector is in.

Thanks for any and all feedback!
Rock on

no need for a tech. it's just a cold solder joint most likely. take off the guard and resolder the connections at that pot.

Okay, I'll try it out and post results. Thank you for a quick reply! Unfortunately I don't have immediate access to any of my tools. I'll just have to throw it on the back burner until after finals.

I had the same problem on a Comanche hard tail that had to be sent back to G&L. The wiring made an unbelieveable noise and the bridge was not placed in the body right..
