I'll jump in today as I have some time. Lunch was leftover Pizza from our band practice yesterday. We put in another 9 hr session yesterday preparing for our weekend gig.It was another 3 AM morning after a lot of smart talk.
At our practice 3 weeks ago, I sent my Vintage White G&L Legacy with the Roland Synth home with Steve to learn some segments to put in some of our songs. Steve is motivated and I knew he would put in some time. He has been palying his 87 Strat Plus since he bought it new in 87. Now here is the kicker. He has some beautiful patches (Horn, sax, piano, strings and some with percussive sounds) and was is a surprise to hear what some of them add to the songs we have been playing for years. He loves the Roland and has figured out how to use it. Steve is also an excellent arranger. But the real surprise, and, maybe it shouldn't be. He was blown away by the Legacy. He used it for the whole practice yesterday and was commenting what a quality, solid feeling guitar that it is. He was also surprised at the pickups and keep in mind that his Strat has Lace Sensors, which I really like. He had the Legacy cooking yesterday. He is now talking to wife as she has suggested that he buy this rig. So the question for the day is:
Have you done something or had someone play one of your G&Ls that resulted in making a G&L convert??
My daughter Kari is a tiny gal and holding her acoustic guitar for long periods of time becomes tiring. Yesterday half way through the practice I suggested that she use the Parker Southern for the rest of the practice. She was astonished at the light weight of this guitar and how well it played and fit her, so I think her acoustic will be backup this weekend and she will play the Parker. I have mentioned before that I am staring to appreciate lighter guitars for gigging do the next question is does weight make a difference to you while gigging.?
Last comment for the day is my L-2500 is an awesome bass. It will be my main this weekend. -- Have a great day.-- Darwin

I had a older martin d-28, and it was pretty heavy. I read not long ago that Merle Haggard had a couple ultra lite acoustics made because his back couldn't take the martins anymore.
I sold a ASAT classic and thought I had made a convert, he just had to have the guitar and I wasn't using it much and wanted to get one with 12 inch radius. Anyway, he is over at his house, and there was quite a bit of dust on it...so maybe not.
I am not yet choosing guitars because of weight, but I am noticing the weight a lot more when I am done!

I think size is generally more of an issue with acoustics. Playing a jumbo, especially standing, makes me feel like a kid playing my dads guitar!

Two weeks ago at my band practice I brought my S-500 along for our guitarist to try out. He uses a Highway one strat that he was having issues with. He switched to my guitar about halfway through our set. Man what a difference, we could hear every little nuance of his playing. Those MFD's pack some serious power. He was plugged into a Marshall JCM 2000 with a wizard 4X12 cab. He called my S-500 a "Monster" multiple times. He went on about the solid feel and he loved that the volume and PTB system was so responsive. It was a treat to hear my guitar played so well through that rig. I'm going to bring my SC-2 for him this Saturday to try out. He might be swayed but he wants to try something with HB's as well. Our drummer has a Les Paul he can try out so we will see.

Hey Darwin,
Got a friend who became a convert with my 87 ASAT. I think he likes the ASAT Z3 better but won't admit. He just needs to get a S-500, Legacy or similar and he will be fully invested.
Being a Martin owner as well I don't think of them as heavy. HOW----EVER if someone feels their dread is heavy I would promptly direct them to a OO or even OOO model. Played a Santa Cruz OO once that was small but JEEEMANY did that thing sound incredible. Would get a Santa Cruz before Taylor and maybe Collings for that size. Has she tried a smaller body acoustic?

Hey Darwin,
I know i am a day late, but thats how things have been rolling around here lately! Boy time sure does fly.....
I have been teaching a lot on the G&L's over the last few years which has given the opportunity for quite a few students to check them out. The result - 3 new G&L owners this year . I think the guitars speak for themselves once they get into players hands, once they are most people are immediately hooked.
As far as acoustics go, for stage work i use a Godin A6. Great sound, light weight and as comfortable as any electric to play. Certainly another great option.

Thanks for the replies folks.
Louis, Kari has a 2007 Ovation Collector Series FKOA, a Koa top and it has the deep bowl. I think its deep bowl (size ) is more of an issue than the actual weight. This is a guitar that I gave to her and it has been one of my favorites for recording.
SBN this Ovation actually packs some weight, but again we did over 8 hrs standing up and the Parker felt like nothing after holding the acoustic for a long time.
Blarg, you nailed it!
GIV, it sounds like you have a convert about to happen!
Sam, its funny how it takes people a while to decide but they get there ultimately. Personally Ii also like Z-3s and have wondered why they are not more popular.
Gitman, G&L is lucky to have someone using G&Ls for instruction. It is great exposure. I looked at a few Tributes while at AG&B the other day and I was somewhat surprised at the pricing. They are very reasonable for what you get and would make great guitars for serious students. THE Goodin you showed would be a much easier guitar for Kari to hold but this is her first gig and we will see how it goes. She sure has prepared for it.
Thanks all and have a great day-- -- Darwin
