Now that I have your attention...
I had a dealer speak to the G&L factory about leaving the serial number plate off a custom order.
Guess what?
They insisted on having a part of it in that they would have no part of it. Their position is they have to put the serial number plate on because it is not a guitar without one. It is an essential part like an automobile VIN plate on the windshield frame.
As for using a decal, their production line workflow does not allow for such a special diversion. The decal goes on before the finish. The plate goes on after. This option is too much to ask of them.
It is all understandable.
With that off the table...
Unlike an automobile VIN plate, there is nothing stopping us from removing it ourselves. G&L has made that very convenient with the dome-head phillips screws. People do all sorts of mods to guitars. It is easier than removing a pickguard. You can always screw it back on. Fill the holes or leave them. The back of the headstock will look better either way. Two tiny holes trump the plate. You can also get some wax wood filler to temporarily fill the holes and prevent moisture from getting in them. I am sure there are several decent ways to deal with the holes. Of course think it over carefully especially if it is a limited edition like a Korina.
Now if you plan to stop buying new G&Ls until they go back to the water slide decal you should make that clear to G&L or it will be a message in a gesture sent to no one but I suspect the lure of the guitar will thin out this crowd.

"They insisted on having a part of it in that they would have no part of it." What does that mean? It sounds like a Monty Python line... I get it about the decals; they don't know where or what or when that neck will go on a guitar, so serializing it would be confusing. Best left as a final step...

I explained it in the two sentences that immediately followed that line. They insisted that they place their part on the guitar. They would have no part of the idea of leaving it off and throwing it in with the case candy. Thanks........Monty Python.willross wrote:"They insisted on having a part of it in that they would have no part of it." What does that mean? It sounds like a Monty Python line...
