NGD - ASAT Special Deluxe
I will post photos tonight but today I received a ASAT Special Deluxe today. Baby Blue with binding and DF Trem, FAT neck with bound ebony board, and the strat like knob orientation. Great guitar but the pickups seem pretty far away from the strings. I'll adjust on them tonight.
I am Happy!
BTW how many double bound, bound neck with ebony board and DF trem ASATs have ever been made?

Re: NGD - ASAT Special Deluxe
Here are some pics. After a little adjustment and new strings, it is awesome.
The guitar feels really solid. It must be the big neck.
I really like the control layout. It has some of the ergonmics of a strat.
It is "medium" weight.
I think I am putting my last humbucker guitar up for sale

Re: NGD - ASAT Special Deluxe
Thanks for posting the photos.
I don't know if you bought this new or used, but
we do have two ASAT Special Deluxes with the same
finish and appointments, though one is listed as having
a Maple top on Basswood and the other as having a Maple top
on Mahogany. Oh, and both of them have the same owner.
Hey, pciklestork, if you happen to read this, let us know about
your two ASAT Special Deluxes.
Note: G&L did originally use a Basswood (American Tilia) body with a Maple top and
then later changed to Mahogany body with a Maple top.
See List of Regular Production ASAT-style guitars
for details.
I wonder if one of the G&L dealers special ordered these
guitars and if so, how many they actually ordered.
Jim, please do register your guitar in our G&L Registry.
Enjoy your new ASD!

Actually, this is an Ebay item that I bid on, never expecting to win.
How do I tell what the body wood is?
If I were guessing, I would say Mahogany based on the weight.
The neck is gloss finish with locking tuners.
It is missing the case candy, but does have a G&L HS case.

Take off the rear control plate and look into the screw holes. If they areJim Sams wrote:Actually, this is an Ebay item that I bid on, never expecting to win.

reddish or dark in color, it is probably Mahogany. If it is white or light in color,
it is probably Basswood or possibly Swamp Ash (special order).
What the serial number?
Hope this helps.

Re: NGD - ASAT Special Deluxe
So do you think all three were ordered by the same dealer?
I guess that I am at least owner #3 of this ASAT.
It looks pretty much unplayed though.
Are there pics somewhere of the other two?

The neck binding with ebony works for me.
Baby blue looks great with ebony.
I believe neck binding with other fretboard wood options depends more on the rest of the guitar.

Re: NGD - ASAT Special Deluxe
Wow! Craig mentioned my old profile.
Somehow, this might have been my first guitar that they replaced. That may be why you see a double entry.
The first one I got, not only did it have the wrong neck profile, but the neck itself was defective. This was right before they got their pleck machine, and my dealer told me that G&L told HIM that someone messed up the neck. A tech tried to set it up, and apparently there was fret lift and twist.
All I asked for was a new neck, but they made me a whole other guitar.
My saga of bad luck continued, as the SECONd neck also had fret issues, and it had to be re-fretted by hand by my dealer's luthier. After that, it played beautifully for years, but there was still one problem.
All I ever wanted was a modern C neck profile, but back in 2007-2008, they didn't make that profile. The second neck, while thinner than the original, was still oppressively fat as you went down the neck.
In just another week or so, the replacement neck I ordered will be in, with the new "Modern Classic" neck profile. Also, in place of the Cavalier pickup I have installed in the bridge, will be a white rio grande tallboy humbucker.
This will be quite the supercharged triple bound baby blue ASAT special deluxe. I'll write a post about its story when it's all done.
The reason the original one was in circulation in 2010 may have been because G&L put another neck on the original model that was returned, and perhaps they re-sold it.
@craig, that may be why it marks me as owning both of these. I suppose for a time, I did. The second one has been with me since 2008.
