Lunch Report - friday 16th september -
Hey ! Last day of the week, aw yes
I must confess I was really scared being the Lunch Reporter this week despite I volunteered to do it (is that sentece correct ).
I had a lot of fun and a lot of interesting and kind answers, thank you to all of you.
Today's lunch was a green-pasta salad (mixed things like slices of knacks, eggs, tomatoes... etc) one of my daughter's chocolate yoghurt that was out-of-date since a few days (but tasted pretty good !) and a pear again that was out-of-date too somehow, well, actually, half a pear !
Someone told me once that semi-pros are often better musicians and happier than pros, because they can refuse, they don't have to bring home the meal. Well I agree with that, though I've been pro 15 years ago, but never been semi... But I'd like to.
G&L question :
If you could or had to exchange one of your G&L for another G&L (of course, another brand would be a blasphema ) what would it be ?
I'd exchange my legacy for an ASAT classic S, or a trinity, boy yes would I ! I love both telecaster shape and fixed bridge but I don't like Z-coils.
NON-G&L question :
Talking about your "career" in music (wether you're pro or not), would you change something if you could go back in time ? Non-serious answers allowed
Well, if I could remake history, I'll don't attend the private music school I was talking about yesterday, and to be simple, I'll don't stick with guitars that don't fit me (IE PRS) and buy me 3 or 4 G&Ls instead !
Have a great week-end, and thank you again.
to you all.

I'd call myself a semi-pro. I've never been a fully fledged pro muso - I'd love to but it's not going to happen. Not here, and not with the music I'm into, and not with my appaling singing voice . Both the bands I play with are full of guys who have been pro musos at some point in their lives and it's really fantastic to be able to play with them. If I could change something about the path I've taken to get where I am I would have started playing in bands a lot earlier and would have learned to play piano/keys. There's still time.
G&L exchange? It'd be tough to give one of them up. Probably swap my Classic S for an ASAT Special. I just don't ever use that middle pickup.
Thanks for an entertaining week Xavier. I'm looking forward to seeing France beat the hell out of Canada in the Rugby World Cup on Sunday

I've thinned my G&L collection down to the 6 guitars that I like the best. It would be hard to trade any of them off. If I had to trade, it would be the '84 SC-2. I'd trade it for an Interceptor, G-200 or Asat Z-2.supereiv wrote: G&L question :

I've never had a career playing music and I'm fine with that. I wouldn't change a thing. If I could go back and change my career as an auto mechanic I'd definitely do that. I hate working on cars more and more everyday. Sorry, about the off topic career rant.supereiv wrote: NON-G&L question :

Nice job this week! Life has been busy and I haven't had much time to look at the forum.

Re: Lunch Report - friday 16th september -
I found it hard this week as I was away from home and using mobile internet.
A quick reply to yesterday- I have 2 boys (4 and 2). The oldest is sort of interested, but my youngest looks like the one who will take over from me
Back to the present day-
G&L Trade - Maybe to an ASAT III.
Pro/semi pro and changes - I was a Pro fro 1 week. I left one job and the next one didn't start until a week later and I did a gig on the week end, so I classify that as a pro. But the reality is Semi Pro. Maybe chase music a bit harder when I was younger, before I married. Had a few missed opportunities and others I perused a little too long, but that's life

Thanks for a great week Xavier!
Lunch in the work cafeteria was pretty good today, chicken/veggies and Lo mein noodles in a peanut satay sauce with jasmine rice, and a scoop of vanilla-bean gelato for dessert
If I could trade one of my G&L's it would be my '90 ASAT for either a Z-2 or a Bluesboy
If I could go back I'd have been involved in more bands in High School, I got kicked out of the band I was in for missing 1 practice! After that I lost interest in being in a band at the time. Also would have made better gear choices the first time around.

Do you grow pears? I'm swamped with them at my house in New Jersey. So many that I still have to go out and thin the herd a bit. In a nutshell; many of the pears weren't picked and seeded everywhere. Ah, neglect...
The pro/semi-pro thing: ??? Don't designate; just play!
Trades? There are some great models out there, but no trades for me.
Career regrets? I passed on TSO twice and was invited to sit-in w/ Alex Scolnik & his trio. That's it!
Cheers,
Will

Great week. Much appreciated!
Question 1: No trades. I'm more than set. Wish I could do these great G&L guitars some justice. But alas....
Question 2: I have no "career" in music, as such. I played in my High School's Stage/Jazz band; played original songs at Coffeehouse venues with my brother in college; sang some harmonies and diddled on the keys in my brother's band, and set up a Delaware corporation (which still exists) in 1990 or so to publish original music - which I never really go around to doing for reasons of career or family or sloth.
My dream is that one day, one of you will send me a PM in search of a special song which I will most willingly provide and we will have lots of fun and make some money while we're at it.
In the meantime....
- great to see you post again, Sprinter! Is Mom's horse still kicking? Also, be grateful that you have skills that will always be in demand. I am not so lucky....
- stagecoach, those are two handsome young lads you've got there. Congrats! It's obvious to me that the older one is going to be one hell of a slide player!
- Dave, your cafeteria sounds like it is head and shoulders above most. Enjoy! (do they make bread pudding?)
- Will, it's hard to keep track of your homes. Level with us. You've got one in the upper Midwest? One in Europe? Now Jersey (which is actually largely a beautiful state). You spend time in Hawaii, turn down twice-in-a-lifetime opportunities. You are a most interesting (and a most talented, probably) character. If you have extra pears, my kids love them, I'm not far, and I pay well for good product and service.
Wishing everyone a great weekend!

Yo Ed, I've got my little WiFi thing going so I can keep checking-in. Ok, I hear ya! Minneapolis, Holland, New Jersey, etc... The pears are yours! The trees are fast growing and you could probably have a working orchard in approx 10 years or less with these. I also have a huge, 100+ year old cherry tree. Huge cherries that are almost black and blood red inside. They've made little trees too. The yard is a mess. My mother lives there now and it's too much work for her. Ah, I'll figure it out...
My passing on the work was tough, but I had other obligations... Keep moving forward, right?
Cheers,
Will

Great week this week ... and no need for that preemptive apology earlier this week, your English is fine ... WAY better than my French.
FROM TODAY
Exchange one of your G&L for another? No exchange here. My Legacy does exactly what I bought it to do and fills a role that I need filled so I have no desire to swap it out. If I lost it I'd be looking for another one. Thats not to say that there aren't other G&L's I'\d want to own ...
Talking about your "career" in music, would you change something if you could go back in time ? Not a thing. Its been a great ride.
FROM YESTERDAY
For those of you who have children, do they play an instrument ? All of my three kids love music but only one plays - my oldest (21yo) son ... and he didn't really express any serious interest until about 4 years ago. He's made huge progress since then though. My youngest son (17yo) keeps tinkering with the keyboards but has put it aside again as he is in final year of high school and focusing on his studies this year (NB Academic year is Jan-Dec here).
Would you buy a G&L sight unseen? I've only ever bought one guitar without having tried it first and that is my G&L. Even then I only took a punt after I'd been able to try one belonging to someone else.
How did you learn music, with a teacher/mentor, or by yourself ? My father was classical violinist turned rock and roll guitarist since before I was born and I grew up around musicians. Even in school and my later life I connected up with a bunch of talented people. So ... no formal training ... essentially peer and self tought.
... AND BACK TO BLARGFROMWEDNESDAY
Yeah Cathie is a fantastic musician, multi instrumaentalist and one of those people who makes you play beyond yourself when you sit in with her. If you search Cathie Travers on youtube there are a few other Astor clips from the same show - and you'll also notice that she makes a lot of responses to comments that peiople leave. She and her good friend Kavisha Mazzella (who I posted a clip of in my recent LRs) had a big hand in expanding my musical (and other) horizons back in my teens.
cheers, Robbie

I did not post but I read some of the LRs and it was a good week, nice job Xavier!
I'll just throw in that I would trade my one and only G&L (so far) for too many other G&Ls to count that I have seen in collections of members here. Not that I am not happy with it, I just see so many that are spectacular pieces of art.

Re: Lunch Report - friday 16th september -
Great reports from Paris this week and they were early morning to start the day with! I am a day late but whats new.
I do not have any guitars that I would like to trade, especially the G&Ls, but I would trade the 30th ASAT Classic for a 30th S-500.
I am not a pro at anything anymore. I have advanced in life to retirement, the best promotion in the world. My job for the day was to stop at American Guitar and band and look at some beautiful Taylor SC2s that just came in. They had a new G&L SC-2 in Fullerton Red with a Maple fretboard. I have been lusting for one and this could have my name on it. Time will tell.
Stagecoach, those young uns look like their getting into it. Keep em going and I always like it when the young ones grow and can play better than dad!
Whip us in shape next week Sprinter. Not easy but I am looking forward to your reports.-- Darwin

If I could exchange my ASAT for any G&L?
Maybe an 1987 Broadcaster dripping with Leo era tone plus I would love a guitar exactly as old as myself, but then again I would rather have both
Career, not yet but I have always adhered to the idea that the difference between professional and amateur depends on whether you get payed or not
but if I could go back and give some advice to my younger self I would say, "you are born knowing how to breathe, everything else you learn along the way".

Ahryn: Someone might correct me, but I don't think G&L produced Broadcasters in 87, though the early ASATs are fantastic guitars and I believe every bit as good. Though there might be a quibble from the most wise among us, that model was pretty much unique to 1985. - ed
