ASAT Classic Bluesboy - tapping the humbucker

Post by jwebsmall »

Has anyone tried splitting the neck humbucker as single
coil?

Hi,

Can't be done. At least not with the Seth Lover, it does not have the right wiring options.

Ed is partly right, it can't be done as it stands, but if you really wanted to you could remove the cover and put an intercept wire onto the series connection, run it out. Maybe separate cold and drain while you or in there (I would), but you need to be careful as this wire is very delicate. You would then need to replace the cover and fully repot it. A whole lot of work.

But if you end up substituting an different bucker for the Seth Lover, so you can coil-tap, do consider tapping via a capacitor, rather than just shorting out. Or have the option of either. Try some different cap values; something around a regular tone-pot cap is a fair zone to start at.
This keeps a fair bit of hum-cancelling, and some warmth, whilst liberating the top end nicely.
Also wiring a 4 or 5-way to include this in series with the bridge could = big nice good stuff whilst still single-coil natured...

That's a good suggestion.

I've narrowed down my next G&L to either a BluesBoy or ASAT classic custom.
I still have time before I'm going to place the order to make the
final configuration decision.

(just a thought...)
A reversible mod to a Bluesboy could be a Duncan "Phat Cat" (P90-in-a-humbucker-casing).
I do recall this being described as a "righteous" use of that pickup, but have not tried it.
