Hello you all !
I noticed that my ASAT classic custom put my blues junior into breakup easily, which is good.
I may enter a blues-rock band ( think Gov't mule, Allman Bro, Black Crowes...) and need a new amp. I'm in love with the princeton reverb reissue, I do love 10 inches speaker and F..der 6L6 amps, so here's the question : does anyone around here have experience with MFD and princeton reverb reissue and want to share it with me ?
Any comment appreciated of course !
Xavier

Re: Princeton reverb reissue and MFD
If you can take your Asat to the store to try a Princeton, my guess is you may well like it.
I use a Deluxe Reverb with my Will Ray Asat, playing the edges of breakup with picking dynamics, and almost totally love it.
When I say "almost', I think that this reservation will disappear when I get around to making a minor mod to the amp: making the "Bright" cap that lives across the Volume pot of the Vibrato channel switchable, instead of always-in. This should relax the slightly crispy edge of the Deluxe Reverb to perfection (though it's hardly driving me nuts in the meanwhile).
This will, incidentally, make it more like a Princeton circuit.....
And I may be mistaken, but I had thought the Princeton power stage was 2 x 6V6's, like a Deluxe Reverb, and not 6L6's? I love the 6V6, and 6L6 too, but super-soft spot for the little 6V6.
And of course there's lots of lovely shinies to be had from a little Fender amp, with the level back a tad and the tone up on the guitar (I use the tone pot far more with the MFD's, and find it's very musical and useful, not just muddy at all).

Re: Princeton reverb reissue and MFD
Sure you're right, the princeton runs 6V6, just like the deluxe.
Thank you for your reply, I was wondering if there'll be enough headroom in a 5 pieces rock-blues band to keep a clean sound with the princeton...

If you're looking to keep up with a 5 piece band AND have some headroom you'll need more than the Princeton imho. Even moving up to a Deluxe might not do it unless you're mic'd. You might want to think about a BF or SF Bassman (if you don't need the verb) or a Pro-Verb or Bandmaster instead. Another option are the Dr. Z EGZ amps, Allen's, and a slew of others.

Not if you want to get clean sounds w/o putting a mic on it. A lot depends on your band but, in general, I'd suspect not even close to being adequate Even a Deluxe would have problems if you want cleans w/o a mic/PA trying to share the stage with drums and bass + otherssupereiv wrote:Sure you're right, the princeton runs 6V6, just like the deluxe.

Sorry! I think I misunderstood.
My Deluxe is absolutely steaming with a band. I can perhaps get cleanish contrasts with right hand dynamics, but mainly it's all in a pretty cooking sort of area.
Perfect for me.
But I suspect not what you had in mind..
Best,
Nick

Re: Princeton reverb reissue and MFD
Blues-rock bands tend to be really loud. I agree with Jon - you'll need a Super or a Twin or a Bassman etc. I don't have direct experience with a Princeton and an ASAT, but I have used a lot of low power (<20W) amps in bands and I've never had a pristine clean sound using them at band volumes, but I have used them for gigging extensively and I have heard myself but you NEED to be mic'd up at a gig if the crowd is going to hear you. You'll need a bit more power to keep it clean and in all likelihood more speaker cone area to be able to hear yourself in a 5 piece band where everybody is using (or trying to outdo one another with) amplification.supereiv wrote:Thank you for your reply, I was wondering if there'll be enough headroom in a 5 pieces rock-blues band to keep a clean sound with the princeton...
And Xavier, anytime you want to post some more pictures of that ASAT Custom is okay with me

Re: Princeton reverb reissue and MFD
Other issue. You should really try the MFD's with a princeton. They are not normal single coils.Apart the loudness of your band also the point where the amp breaks up and how clean is clean is different with the MFD's
just if you did not consider yet.Really go and play at band volumes at least one time
Because of this and the hunt for this BF clean sparkle I moved from Princton(65RI) to Weber 6A20 a DLX Reverb remake and still may buy annother 6A20HP or 6A40
So pls try and make sure

Re: Princeton reverb reissue and MFD
That's exactly what I meant !
I fear I may have to give up on the princeton and the deluxe, too bad. Maybe if I find a used super reverb or a bassman... Who knows ?
But those two really are on the heavy side, you can't have it all !!!
By the way, I have some more pictures, I just have to find the time to upload them.
A big thanks for all your answers guys !
