NGD, I Broke A Promise

Post by darwinohm »

Okay everyone, you know how I feel about the new serial number plates and that has not changed. At least they could have covered the birthmark. So here is the deal. I walked into AG&B today and their high end guitars are displayed in a second room directly ahead as you walk in the door. On the center of that wall wall was a guitar the lit up from the front door. It was a Gold Flake ASAT Classic. I immediately went up to it and took it off the wall. Boy did I lose my sense of sanity. This color is either a love or a hate relationship. You have never seen a flake finish until you have seen a G&L. They had a Silver Flake near it but it didn't make me senseless like this Gold Flake. It got me in trouble as I didn't check with the Prez before buying. I thought that she would find it stunning. She did but more on that later. We got into the negotiating and I had to make a choice as it would have been repriced as soon as I left the store. Anyway Ginny said it is "gaudy", hey, I can live with that as it is the most God Awful gorgeous color I have ever seen, but I still love red. It has a matching headstock, GOT neck, back taper. and a 1C quartersawn neck which I really like. I have to say the workmanship is outstanding and this is the first G&L that I have bought new with the perfect setup. It requires no adjustment and there is room under the saddles to lower if I wish. It has a low action and killer tone. They do have it together on QC. Here it is! It is hard to get good pictures in this frame of mind!!!!

Wow, I had to put my sunglasses on to view those pics Darwin. She is definitely a blingy gal. She'd be right at home on a Vegas gig.

I like gold guitars, but they're too hard to hide around the house. Hence I am yet to own one.

Sweet! I'm a sucker for a gaudy finish and that fits the bill.

What do you make of the serial number tag in person, Darwin? Does it look any better than in the photos

Blarg, I do not like it any better. The serial number plate is quite nice but mounting with the screws is tacky and they should have covered the birth mark. When I look at how it is mounted it looks like an obvious intent to leave the birthmark uncovered. If the plate were mounted less than 1/2 inch to the right and a bit closer to the tuners it would look perfectly centered. Personal opinion but it is no way as neat as the waterslide. -- Darwin

G&L really does some of the best flake around and that ASAT is a beut. From the lighting almost looks like a lemon-gold. I almost bought a blue flake SC2 like the one recently posted but missed the end of the auction, and keep looking at this one at the Bros', though I wish someone would buy it and put me out of my "misery." ;) Btw, what's bad about the birthmark, though I agree the new plate is not the best execution imho.

What the heck!! Great guitar. Now you need a Silver Flake and a Turquoise Flake too ;)

And jon, I've been eying that Deluxe too and was thinking exactly the same ...

I have been watching this one for some time. If it had been local it would have been gone a long time ago. It has a killer birdseye neck and Gold Flake to boot. Jos, they has a Silver Flake next to it and it didn't have a chance although it would be cool. I don't think that I should bring that up tonight. Jonc, it is almost a lemon gold. It is the brightest thing you have ever seen. When I have taken pictures with my camera it is unusual to exceed 1.5 meg. This is the first time the camera has used 2 meg. and it did it on all the pics. -- Darwin

Darwin,

Beyoootiful gitar ya got there! :alright:

Had my paws on the gold sparkle ASAT Deluxe w/Bigsby at B Brothers a couple of months ago and man was that finish sweet. The closest I have is a red sparkle Z-3 but the gold may just be what Elvis wanted ages ago!!

She's beautiful Darwin!... Even with the extra bit of face piercing/jewelry (although, most modern girls seem to have a little of that nowadays, anyway!) I love the gold sparkle on her... you must have some of the same jackdaw/squirrel DNA tendency towards shiny objects as I do.

Well Darwin, I can now post photobucket pics after a long computer issue so let's try to post pics.

Here is the glamour shot from Guitar Adoptions where she came from

And here is how I gave it to myself a few days after receipt!

Not for the faint of heart, especially since I installed a WR bridge p-up!

I'll address this seems how it has been overlooked. There is nothing inherently wrong with the birthmark. It is a filled hole. Why put a spotlight on it? The proximity of the plate does just that. Imagine hanging a picture on the wall next to a poorly covered hole. The birthmark is not poorly filled, it just should not be noticed if it is not going to be covered. It is not something you admire like a nice burl knot or birdseye yet three birthmarks and no plate would be better than one birthmark and the plate.

Darwin,

That is a guitar that demands an audience.

Now you need a pair of matching yellow flaked sneakers.

Sam,

Is that guitar named "Santa"?

I don't know if I am man enough to play that guitar. And I ride a Harley. Yow-Za!! It is bright.

And a thought for those who have never seen a G&L metal flake guitar up close & personal. I have yet to see a photograph that REALLY shows off the sparkle & beauty of the flake. It is just really hard to get down, almost impossible.

But it sure is purrty.

Hey, thanks for the comments everyone. Sam, the CAR with the white binding is a class act. The boots are awesome, I could use both colors and Blargs costume may have to be on my wish list for Christmas. Now if I could dye my hair and look 50 years younger I wouldn't have to play anything but just move around onstage. Ginny actually asked me last night if I would play that thing in public. You bet I will!! I want to make a comment on the new custom build sheets that come with the new models. It is a very nice touch and done very classy along with the COA. It also comes in a nice black envelope which really tops it off. Good job G&L and as I said before it was setup perfectly. It had a sign off day of July 25, 2011 so it is a baby. The paint and workmanship is stunning.-- Darwin :luv:

Wow Meowmix, they are purty. It is interesting that after doing a search in the registry on the Gold Flake color that many of them turned out to be basses. So it appears that flake was a popular color for basses. Lowenders have always had good taste.-- Darwin

Blingy is unfamiliar to me but I can guess! Ginny wears flashy things at times and I thought she would go bonkers when she saw this blingy thing. She did but in the wrong direction. I think that she likes it better today. It is funny because it is in the center of the wall and with the living room lights on at night it looks lit up. It is a bit blingy!!!!-- I just asked Ginny what Blingy means? She said glitzy, like rhinestones. Now I get it!!!!-- Darwin

What case did this come with?

Was it a tweed rectangle shape or the hard case with the rounded corners?

It should have come with the G&L Deluxe Hardshell Tolex Case w/Fitted Interior.

I noticed some NOS 2010's selling with the new case. I did a Search for "case" here and a lot came up. I did not see the announcement referenced and I started reading too many interesting posts.....so.....I asked here.

I just bought a 2010 in May. I wish it came with the new case.

BTW, I don't see the new case announcement in the link you posted. Within that thread is the News page here: http://www.glguitars.com/news/index.asp which doesn't mention it.

Thanks.

it's the next article and is labelled All USA G&L Basses and Guitars now ship with Deluxe Hardshell Tolex Case w/Fitted Interior.

Here is a perfect use for that word.

"analysts of gang culture say it seems logical to seek American assistance, because today's British gangs consciously ape American gang ambitions and style, from the bling to the lingo."

Darwin,
If you are going to break a promise, you might as well BREAK a promise. That gold glitter is amazing. Funny thing about glitter finishes. Sitting at home surrounded by sensible things, TV;s, toasters, sofas etc. They look really Gaudy with a capital G. But, stick them on stage with some stage and footlights and they just become the hit of the show. NOTHING is to gaudy to be on stage - that guitar will kick your game up a notch before you ever turn it volume up.

Nice Axe pardner.
