Metal on a G&L

Post by turbo »

Hi everybody! :)

Any heavy metal G&L players out there? I'm looking for a new #1 guitar, and I've been seriously looking at the Invader XL. I've checked out the usual suspects for bolt-on "super-strats" and I've decided I really like the feel of an Invader better, but I've never been able to use one in a loud environment for an extended time.

I'm leaning toward an XL with an Alder body and Quartersawn Maple neck/Maple fretboard, but thought I'd ask if anyone had an opinion on Swamp Ash or Ash with Maple top for metal as well.

Some more specific info: My band is not really a normal modern metal band as we play a more thrashy style and don't downtune. My tone has a lot of mids, kind of an SOD meets Slayer sound. I've always used passive pickups and don't think I'll ever use actives. If I had to guess, I'll probably end up replacing the bridge pickup with some other hotter passive pickup.

So any thoughts on an Ivader for metal? :?:

I enjoy playing 70s and 80's metal...Rush, Dokken, Triumph, Def Leppard, and even early 90s stuff like Firehouse. My Legacy HB with a JB in the bridge does fine for me. I've never actually played an Invader, but I'd like to...they look cool! I'd think it would do fine, and if you wanted hotter pickups, that's easy enough to do!

I have an Invader XL on order (Blackburst, matching reversed headstock, Floyd, ebony fb, ...) and it definetely will be used for metal

I'm really looking forward to that one, that will be an amazing guitar :shocked003:

Yeah I love the way the reverse looks, got a Carvin and an Ibanez... It makes changing strings about 3 times as hard, but I don't care.

I recently recorded an classic Ratt riff using my G&L Legacy HB...swamp ash body, maple fingerboard, SD JB in bridge. I'm playing through my Marshall JVM, a 2x12 Celestion G12-M (greenback) cab recorded with Shure SM57. There was a delay on in the loop...not for any good reason other than I forgot to turn it off before recording, but it seems to work! No other effects or EQ besides a little reverb.

PS. I'm not a big Ratt fan, but always liked this riff.

My Legacy is Fullerton Red, which is the most aerodynamic finish and therefore the fastest! <ducks!>
