Do you use Marshalls with your G&Ls?
I'm posting this because I don't see you much talking about using marshalls.
I have a JVM 50w, and it's a pretty good amp, works well with my asat classic with the tone and volume knob rolled off a bit.
It's a very transparent amp, and the clean sound is pretty good for a marshall.

I used to have a Marshall Vintage Modern combo. That was a great amp, I wish I'd kept it. I think a lot of the modern Marshalls have a good clean sound. The thing about a Marshall is that you never ever see them on stage with bands that don't play metal or hard rock, and people know this - punters included. I know that if I turned up to a gig with a Marshall I'd be asked to keep it down!

Re: Do you use Marshalls with your G&Ls?
Marshall has been building amps for some time now. Isn't the JVM is their latest and greatest? I don't doubt it is an excellent amp.
Most amps these days are made with multiple channels. Each amp has their pros and cons, but usually there is a sweet spot on the dial for the player. I'm tired of not finding the amp I want in one package. I decided to build my own.
In comes London Power. Kevin has written books on the Ultimate Tone ( I own them all ).
Here is the amp I am building
http://www.londonpower.com/catalog/project_kits.php
One channel - Clean (Fender)
Two - Crunch ( Marshall )
Three - High gain (5150/Mesa Boogie)
The boards are easy to assemble, the real pain it getting it in the chassis.
To answer your question. I will have the Marshall Tone in my amp, it just won't say it.

My Mark V gets many different cleans, and can even get some fender cleans. It gets pretty marshally at the right voices too. So I don't use a marshall specifically, but I do set up for 'marshall metal' (think JP, Iron Maiden etc) and rock the heck out with my ASAT.

My JVM 205c has 6 channels, I only use 2 or 3 of them, the clean one and the jcm 800 like one. I prefer a marshall for marshall tones.
I try the Vintage Modern (VM) but didn't like it with my asat classic, maybe too vintage for me.
yes I think so, with the VM.Isn't the JVM is their latest and greatest?
that's great and maybe cheaper, but i'm no good with electronics...I'm tired of not finding the amp I want in one package. I decided to build my own.

Meowmix, do you have any more shots of your amp build? That looks to be a pretty cool amp!
I used to be a die-hard Marshall fan, but I never played metal with them. My influences were drawn much more from the Clapton, Page and Allman Brothers era. I even owned a '67 JTM45 back in the day (stupid to sell it), and my last Marshall (JCM800 combo) just went out the door about two months ago. I'm mostly playing Carol Ann and Fuchs amps these days, but the Carol Ann can capture the old Plexi vibe pretty well. I especially enjoy playing my ASAT Deluxe and Heritage H-150 through the CA. Although, it loves single-coil pickups as well:

There is this other fellow, who built "The Standard" from scratch.
It is from the Ultimate Tone book #5 I believe.

Mine is just a pre-amp. My plan is to finish that sometime in Oct. then start on the Power Amp. My personal preference is to separate the pre and the power amp in a rack mount.
Kevin has the Marshall Tone
http://www.londonpower.com/catalog/prod ... ucts_id=68
In either the Plexi sound or the 800 Master Volume sound.
He also has the Dumble sound as well.

one thing about Kevin's Power Amps is they are low powered compared to Marshall. 20 Watts or less, the Marshalls are either 100W or the 50W which are usually cranked to get that "tone".
I like the Marshall tone, but not at that volume.

Re: Do you use Marshalls with your G&Ls?
Yeah, those look like pretty decent amps at a very decent price, too. I'd like to build one some day, but since we play some fairly large rooms and outdoors, I'd pretty much have to go with a 50-watter if I wanted it for live use. Then, of course, I'd probably have to consider an attenuator if it's too loud.....LOL. It's interesting that Kevin has the Dumble option, too. Funny, but while I like Dumble-style amps, I find some to be a little too smooth for my tastes. I guess I kind of fall somewhere between the Marshall and Dumble camps, which is probably why the Carol Ann and Fuchs amps agree with me so well. But, when you get your amp together, be sure to post some audio clips as well as some more photos!meowmix wrote:Not at the moment.Jim P wrote:Meowmix, do you have any more shots of your amp build? Re: Do you use Marshalls with your G&Ls?
This is just my two cents about Marshall Amplifiers versus Fender amps.
Since mid-April and the arrival of my Bluesboy SH, I had been enjoying playing it acoustically and through my Fender Blues JR. NOS, thinking this was fantastic. (It sounds lovely when played acoustically).
Without giving it much thought one morning, I just went ahead and plugged into my 15 year old Marshall VS100 which was sitting next to my Fender. I flipped on the OverDrive channel with the Alnico pickup as my pickup choice on the Bluesboy. What a sound! Unbelievable and I was blown away! Felt like the blues sounds were just pumping out of the combo like never before, enabling my playing that much more since I was hearing the blues tones that brought me to the Bluesboy in the first place!
Needless to say, instead of hauling my Fender to the last blues open mike I attended two weeks ago I brought the Marshall and it was a great night. No more worrying about being heard or having proper tone, that kind of thing. Fellow jammers paid me a few compliments on how well my playing had improved. ;<) What improved was my ability to hear myself in a band setting. On the flip side my MIM Strat sounds better when teamed with my Fender amp.

Marshall rules!
with my asat classic, it cuts much better in the mix than my agile "les paul like" that's why I like those single coils

Re: Do you use Marshalls with your G&Ls?
I've not checked in here for a couple weeks, but I'm a Marshall user...JVM 205H, in fact!! Good to see another JVM user here! I typically run it through a 2x12 cab with greenbacks. It has such a range of tones! I'm not really a metal player...well, some 80s hair metal, but certainly not numetal! But really just a lot of classic rock and 80s rock, and the JVM covers them all nicely. It can do ultra-high gain modern stuff, but it's a rare day when I use it like that. And the clean tones are really very satisfying! I actually use most of the channels/modes, with the exception of OD Red, and I don't use Crunch Orange very much.
And you are right about how good this amp sounds at low volumes. I can easily get great tones from it at volumes that won't disturb my sleeping family at night!
That's a cool build, meowmix! I'll be interested in hearing about your progress. I have an amp that was built for me as a mini-plexi a few years ago, but last year I rewired it to give me more of a Fender blackface vibe. And while I like it, the build-something bug has bitten me again, so I'm thinking of putting together a single-ended JCM800. There is a site that sells PCBs for these, which are meant to retro-fit into an Epi Valve Jr. So I'll basically just pull the blackface board from my amp and replace it with this one. If I really like it, I'll get a new chassis and trannies for it so I can put the blackface back together.

Muleya, I have the same model in combo : the JVM 215c with one speaker. And my modes uses are similar to you, I don't use the OD red which is damn too distorded for me!
I never had a JCM 800, but some say that Clean red and OD green in the JVM are very close.
I would be glad to try a JCM 800, but maybe it doesn't sound as good at low volumes, but loud...

Re: Do you use Marshalls with your G&Ls?
I borrow a nasty DSL2000 something or other half-stack at the rehearsal room I use, and usually take my ESP Horizon. The other week, for a change, I took my '83 SC-2. It was almost a religious experience. The guitar sounded way better through the Marshall than it does through my own Fryette Pittbull… even our drummer noticed, and said "why does it sound so good?".

Re: Do you use Marshalls with your G&Ls?
djyne - yes, Clean/Crunch Red and OD Green I'd say are pretty close to a JCM800...though I've only played a real JCM800 briefly in a store several years ago! I like using a Green Screamer to boost Crunch Red...great 80s tone! Are you a member of the JVM Forum? It's a great forum...lots of friendly folks. If you've not checked it out, you might want to...here's the link: http://jvmforum.com.
But you are right about one thing...the JCM800s really need to move some air to hit "that" sound...the JVMs sound much better at reasonable volumes. There are a few guys on the forum who have JCM800s, or had them in the past, and while they love the 800s, they prefer their JVMs for a number of reason...getting great tone at reasonable volumes, and the flexibility usually topping the list.
Phooey - Cool! I'd think those Fryette's would be great sounding amps...but every once in a while, you hit upon a golden combination...sounds like you've found one!

Re: Do you use Marshalls with your G&Ls?
The Fryette is the best amp I've owned, and one of the best I've heard, but I haven't yet found a way to dial it in for my SC in a way that suits the heavier sounds I use with my own band. For classic tones, they play together just fine. My theory is that the Fryette has a really clear, growling, upper mid heavy tone that sounds really authoritative with darker sounding guitars. The SC has similar properties, so I figure that into the Fryette, they work against eachother, whereas plugged into a run of the mill Marshall, I get the bark I'd get from the Fryette with, say, my Horizon.Muleya wrote:Phooey - Cool! Anyway, this is way nerdy and I'm hijacking someone's thread… !

Muleya : yes I'm a member of the JVM forum.
I posted here because there's not many G&L users there, and I wanted to know what you think about mfd's/marshall combination.
I think it's pretty good actually
When I was looking for a new amp, I tested many, and for the price the jvm fitted the bill better than others.
I didn't like my asat classic with fender amps (too bright, but at that time I didn't know I could you the tone knob lol)
I liked it with Vox amps (ac15), as it's a dark amp, so they complement each other, but I needed an od channel.
Well Phooey, theses Fryette amps looks very good! This Memphis amp would suits me very well
I'll post some pictures of my gear soon
