Been a while since I recorded anything, this one is a little different, but I am very happy with this one. Just spend the afternoon mixing it, after recording the leads.
Bass -LB75, direct in
Rhythm - C66 (equipped with Rebel Yells) on clean (fat) of Mark V and Crunch for dirt
Leads - ASAT Special, Bridge pickup, Mark I mode (also Mark V)
The bass line is a treat I would say, I really like how it turned out. Two links below, I use some octave displacements and modal playing ideas for the leads. The soundcloud sounds better quality I think.

Let me know what you think, used a lot of processing tricks and stuff I wouldn't normally use to make it 'less dry'.

Ahhhhh prog... It will forever have a place in my heart.
Very nicely done - your playing is vastly improved on this track than on the one you posted last year - all that practice is paying off I think there is a definite King Crimson/Genesis '70s prog feel to it, they're the glory years and you've captured that perfectly . Was that was your intention?
Now to listen to some KC.....

yeah i agree with a dose of King Crimson vibe there...
i like it...
this kind of stuff, and some of the stuff i do....i'm always thinking of how it'd be cool in a movie soundtrack...
i'm seeing a movie....Clooney in a 'dream sequence' where he's trying to grasp Angelina's...ummm..."philanthropics"...

Re: New tune: To Bloom
Thanks for listening guys, I agree Blarg, my guitar playing is getting a whole bit better. The other difference here is I actually sat down wrote, practiced and such, opposed to improving all the leading voice and such. Makes a big difference, who'd of though. Works better as I rarely have the time to sit down and record for 6 hours doing takes anymore.
BadJaxx, that would be.. Quite the scene . I've had the 'soundtrack' vibe get mentioned on a few pieces I did in the past. Not sure what it is in my approach, but it has come up before.
the one I posted last year was more something I had to get off the shelf, and didn't know how to approach, sometimes it just won't go anywhere you know? It was too noodley to warant working on in the first place, I tried to force a collection of riffs to be a song, they weren't really. The end result is you learn something by going through the motions.

Nice, thanks for sharing. The bass part is cool. I also really like how you kinda built a theme and variations into the lead though out, really tied the whole song to together for me.

I've had a couple more listens to it and it really is a very good piece of music with some very nice guitar/bass parts in it. Stick to this stuff Sirmy, you have a knack for it.

Thanks Blarg, missed that comment before, currently working on expanding/finishing it due to some suggestions. I have a drummer friend who is going to help me out as he has a MIDI kit, I expanded it to bring back the clean part and am wrapping up the leads, it got a bit logner due to the return of the A part (clean section, like sicknottired mentioned about theme, someone thought I should bring back the one part entirely to enforce that), and finally a chance to re-record the bass would be great as it was always missing something, I ran some frequency analyzers over it and it had nothing about 600 hz! (no wonder I struggled to even get it where I did). The downside is, it became a bit of a monster as it grew a couple minutes in the process, which means recording will be that much more hellish. Looking forward to starting on that soon though, there were a few spots I needed to clean up a tad anyway.blargfromouterspace wrote:I've had a couple more listens to it and it really is a very good piece of music with some very nice guitar/bass parts in it. I had done some more mixing/mastering to this one, for practice sake and have started into things like impulses for rooms and such, which really brought life to the drums, as well as signal splitting the bass and whatnot. The production side of things is getting much more involved also. Some other changed were more highs on the rhythm guitars, especially when driven to get more bite and more prominence, and whatnot. Either way, I am confident and this was a good stepping stone before what I hope I can turn into the final product.
Thanks for the feedback guys.

I liked this. The movie soundtrack idea also occurred to me. I see a guy driving along lonely byways to attempt to reunite with his first love. As he moves down the road, flashbacks of special times in the relationship are shown. Holding hands on a pier, splashing in the water. Sipping wine at a nice bistro, urgent kisses under a Ferris wheel. What will he find at the end of his journey? Maybe some day we will all find out... - ed

Re: New tune: To Bloom
Thanks Ed, I am still working through a sort of extended arrangement to this, to try and give it a bit more familiarity and drive. The drummer should have the parts ready for me soon. I broke the bridge heavy section into 2, to prevent some sameyness from the eighth note runs, and put the current outro between, to return to the initial feel for the outro. I also have a reamp box around now, so I can get the guitar tones more perfect, and as mentioned the bass needs an overhaul at minimum, it has no definition (and everything about 600 HZ is non existant, not sure why).
