7.5 vs. 12 inch radius

Hey folks, hope everyone is doing well.

I am hoping that some of you guys can give me peace of mind and/or at least help me set the record straight. I took my ASAT into one of my local G&L dealers yesterday to show him the size and shape of neck that I prefer. I am just a day away from pulling the trigger and ordering something but I am stressing about the neck. I really want it to be like the one on my ASAT. in fact, I don't really care about color or anything else. After inspecting and playing it for a few minutes, he told me that it was a 7.5 radius. I always thought it was 12 because it was flatter than the neck on a vintage SC-2 that I once owned. I was also reminded last night that the 25th Anniversary has a 12 inch radius. I used to own one of those and the neck on my ASAT is similar to it.

Anyway, the photos below might point out the obvious but I wanted to share them with you guys and get some feedback. I dug out this radius gauge that came with a book I bought last year....Am I crazy? doing something wrong? missing something? The dealer also suggested that I would want the heritage version of the #2 neck. Looking at the specs, these seems misleading as well. my ASAT has a fat neck and the heritage seems to be the slimmer version.

I like fat round necks, in my mind, the #1 neck or #1c would be the way to go....?

as an aside, I would rather buy off the shelf than custom order but the ASATs that I have seen advertised locally are all 7.5. I am wondering why there are not more 12 inch radius ASAT guitars...?

Nope, you are missing nothing. I am sure you are right, 12'' radius. I can't speak to what you need to order in detail, but it sounds like the guy you are working with is kind of a dope...

Well, definitely a 12 inch radius there fella. But, 7.25 inch? Where'd that come from? Surely, G&L **only** offer neck options of 12 inch and 7.5 inch? http://www.glguitars.com/instruments/US ... guitar.asp. I've got two ASAT Special Deluxe guitars. One has the 7.5 inch neck. The other (Custom built in Clear Red with Dual Fulcrum Vibrato) has the 12 inch neck. I thought all of the ASATS, apart from the Will Ray Signature model and the Deluxe models, have 7.5 inch necks as 'standard'? And, all of the other G&L guitars, apart from the Jerry Cantrell 'Rampage' signature model, have the 12 inch neck? Maybe Craig could come in on this and explain the neck options if they are any different from what appears on the G&L website? Thanks.

Good luck in your search Paul, but I agree with 'sickbutnottired': "...it sounds like the guy you are working with is kind of a dope...". The difference between a 12 inch and a 7.5 inch neck is kinda obvious. The 12 inch is very flat.

Guys, thanks for the responses. I felt silly posting the photos but I wanted to be 1000% sure. Its going to cost me a chunk of change and a bit more explaining to the wife so I wanted to make sure I did it right. This will be the last guitar I purchase for a few years (famous last words...Haha)

Yes, these are the 12 inch necks I am looking at. I want one of the 12 inch baseball bat necks and am thinking that the 1c is what I am after. I don't want to over think this but in the last 4 years or so, I have bought, sold and traded a fair number of G&Ls and I know which necks I prefer.

For what's it worth, my local dealer was not pushy or adamant about my neck being a 7.5 but he seemed pretty sure of himself.. I didn't argue with him but left the store somewhat dumbfounded and spent all night trying to understand this. I feel better now. thanks again, Paul

Paul, that radius gauge shows that it's definitely a 12" radius. I never listen to what people who work in stores say (sorry if you're reading this Tim!) because 90% of the time it's stuff they make up on the spot, or so it seems to me. Only once in a while will you meet one who knows what they're talking about.

The #1 neck is the king of fat round necks, and the U shape one will get you the baseball bat feel. Why not custom order one? You'll get exactly what you want.

If I were you I'd order through another dealer, one who doesn't recommend the opposite of what you want!!!

Blarg, you are probably right, I was trying to shop local but I am gonna shoot an email to Tim right now. on the other hand, as long as I know what I want and the dealer conveys this info, it should all be good.

Your dealer was probably referring to the current Tribute instruments (except for the Rampage Jerry Cantrell Signature which has 13.75" radius) as they all have 9" radius necks. There are no neck options
for the Tribute Series instruments.
