file size for S-500 frets

Post by burndog »

I haven't decided if I have the courage to take a crowning file to the frets on my S-50 yet, but if I do, does anyone know what size file I would need to look for. The guitar was built in 1995 or 96 the best I can gather from it's serial number.

I am new to this stuff, and I have heard numbers (6105 etc) and also sizes, jumbo, medium, etc. If I gather the courage, I will likely get one of the fret crowning files that Stemac sells ( unless someone can recommend something else ) They are pretty pricey so I would prefer to only buy one, as opposed to a set.

While I'm asking, (and I know price will vary of course) but what do people here pay for fret levelling and crowning...maybe it would be better to just pay to have it done professionally. The neck and fretboard are both maple, and is not bound, so I would assume it would be a pretty basic operation????
