S-500 HSS - thoughts?

Post by Laffeaux »

Earlier this year I picked up a used Legacy HSS and was surprised how much I prefer it to a standard SSS Legacy. I rarely use the single coil in the bridge position, and only occasionally use position 2. Effectively for me on an SSS guitar there are three usable positions: 3, 4 and 5. I found with the HSS that I actually like all five positions, and use all five!

This got me thinking about my S-500. I much prefer the MFD pickup in the bridge to an alcino pickup, but I still don't use it a lot. I was considering the possibility of putting a humbucker into the bridge position on the S-500 to see it it improves things for me, as it did on the Legacy. Since it's not an easy swap (new pickguard, etc), before doing this have any of you tried it? What's your thoughts, good idea or bad? Does a humbucker mix well with the MFDs?
