Observation

Post by joel406 »

Admitted Fender freak here. Been playing Jazz and Precision Bass's since the mid-seventies. Just recently decided to go with some G&L. So, I am now the proud owner of one USA L-2500 and two USA M-2500s and one tribute M-2500. Yes, all 4 are fine basses. But I've spent the last week comparing my G&ls to my Fenders. Now I have a lot of Bass's. 13 at current count. So, 9 actual Fenders. Two American pros. The rest are pro II. All are 5 string. Observation. The M-2500 (USA) has "the" neck. The active electronics are superior to the L-2500. While very usable the L-2500 feels tamer than the M-2500. The neck of the L-2500 feels more comparable to the Fender. While the M-2500 seems faster. Especially my M-2500 with the maple fret board. My other M-2500 is not maple. Whether it's rosewood or something else I don't know. It's not as dark as my Fenders. One of which borders on ebony. But my M-2500 that has it plays better than my L-2500. My takeaway is all of my current inventory is considered keepers. Why G&L put the M-2500 on "build to order" baffles me. The M-2500 is clearly the better bass. The active electronics in the M-2500 are clearly more usable. With the boost/cut compared to the cut only of the L-2500 the M-2500 has a much wider tonal palate. While I still enjoy the L-2500 my go to will be one of my USA M-2500s. But I still find no matter which one of my basses I pick up. I have a great time.

Hey Joel,

I also really like the M series basses, but you'd be surprised how little people actually request them. I suspect sales being low on the model is why it was moved to BTO only.

In the last year that I've been here at the Custom Shop, we've only built 2-3 across the entire company.
