Lunch Report: Was Santa Nice?

Post by tomanche »

It's two days after Christmas, so it's time for a Lunch Report.

Lunch today was leftover pulao; i.e., curry rice and vegetables, plus tea and a small slice of leftover French silk pie that my youngest made for the first time for Xmas dinner.

Right now, my nearby college radio station, KZSC, is playing a cool cover of Robin Trower's "Bridge of Sighs" by Ann Wilson (of Heart). Great song, great pipes.

Topic: Did Santa bring you any guitar or music-related gifts?

The closest for me is a new CD that my collegian gave me by her friends'/schoolmates' bluegrass band, Big Joe. Well done. My big guitar gift is that I started playing guitar again last weekend after breaking my right collarbone 9 weeks ago (mountain biking). My calluses are soft, my right arm is still restricted in movement, and my left hand felt quite weird at first, but time spent on scales is scraping away the rust. I hope to play a NYE party where we are the live band for folks to sing karaoke-style. It's a blast!

Happy two days after Christmas to ya!

Lunch today was left over beef tenderloin and a variety of vegetables. Last remnants of Christmas dinner but still very good.

Love Bridge of Sighs and gotta say Ann’s pipes fit this song very well.

Santa brought a Pedaltrain Nano board and a D’Addario circuit breaker cable. Trying to shrink things down from Pedaltrain Pro that holds MANY pedals and keep tap dancing to a minimum. The circuit breaker cables are pretty cool in that they eliminate the loud electrical connection noises.

Bummer to hear about the broken collarbone. I did it about three years ago on road bike leaning into a sharp turn. Hope it heals well so guitars and bikes will be back in regular rotation!

So stuffed from Holidays, so I skipped lunch.
Ann Wilson is a very gifted guitarist.
My Sweetie bought me a Gretsch G9420 Alligator Biscuit Resonator for Christmas. Such a treat! I am using it to learn to play with a slide. So much fun!
Not planned, but I got a text from my preferred guitar store Dec. 21. They had a line on a pristine Taylor 914ce-SB and wanted to know if I was interested. The price was reasonable, so Sweetie and I drove up and picked it up on the 22nd. Of course I took her out to dinner to show my appreciation for her support.

hi Tomanche,

sorry to hear about the fx'd clavicle, i had one of those early 2nd year college playing football with buddies, L side, hurt like hell for awhile.
was playing in a band at the time, had a gig and had to sit down in a chair for the night, wasn't going to hang the les paul on that.
they do find a way to heal, best wishes for quick healing!

lunch was cheeseburger and fries at work. back to work this wkd, was off for the Christmas holiday.

no big music gifts, but some smaller ones, a gtr strap with G Dead roses and skulls, my son got his friend to make me a 20% sized stratocaster (HSS) with a 3 D printer. I was impressed, never seen anything like that, the detail was amazing. My wife gave me a nice box to put guitar cleaning and string changing supplies in. It really helped me clean up my little studio, that stuff was all over the place.

SUaPYG, i have the gretsch G9241 for a few years now. it's great. made in China but surprisingly good quality. V shaped neck. mine had a pickup which sucked, so i cut a rectangular hole in the top and mounted an Epi mini humbucker between the resonator and the neck. came out pretty good. Wired it up to the strap button jack and works well. I have alot of fun with that, tuned it to open G and have been learning G and D blues songs on it and working on my slide technique. I take that one to blues festivals, it's reasonably compact, got a gator soft case for it.
Congrats on the Taylor as well, they are really nice!

Thanks all for the well wishes. A bit amazing that in this small sample we have three broken clavicles! Guitar playing is coming along well. I'm eager to get back on the bike, but probably must wait a few more weeks.
Sam, glad Santa brought some guitar goodies. I'll have to look into the circuit breaker cables...
SUaPYG, congrats on the Taylor. One of the finest I ever played was an early 900 series.
John o, I like the skull and roses. I might have to get one of those.

It took some research, but I found that Kenny Wayne Shepard is playing the killer guitar on the "Bridge of Sighs" cover.

Lunch was a pickle dog and bagel and lox. Satisfying.
Very Nice was ol' Santy Clause. Albeit a wee late.
I got to go and purchase, with my wife's blessings and along with a trade of my Reverend Thundergun bass...a CLF SB-2 in a clear Blue. It is amazing. And light. And Growly!
I visited it and played it last week. Wanted to try an SB-1 but alas...none there at Eclipse Music in St. Paul, MN.
Went to a store in Wisconsin today to try and CLF SB-1 in Andromeda. It was a beaut but I kept thinking about the SB-2 and that blue finish. And tone. And feel. Headed back to ol' Bluey and made the buy. Got it home and played it for 3 hours straight. Enjoyable! Love those USA ones. Tried a few Tributes but the CLFs just felt like butter and the tone made me swoon a bit.
Both stores are G&L Dealers and both were very nice to deal with and made me welcome. Eclipse Music in St. Paul. John was super. Talked with Tom at Brickhouse Music in River Falls, Wisconsin and he was truly nice and we spoke deeply of music. And bass.
Was a good day. No remorse.

Sweet! I've always loved the blueburst ever since BBE reintroduced the Comanche in that finish in the late 90s.

I can't put it down...the act of discovery has me in it's grip.

I would have never considered that color...until I saw it. Just smitten by it.
