Is this a counterfeit G&L?

Post by charleyrich »

I was searching for used G&L semi-hollow guitars and came across this unusual cross between an ASAT Deluxe semi-hollow and a Bluesboy.

Is this a counterfeit G&L?

The serial number is: CLF24669

https://www.sweetwater.com/used/listing ... low-guitar

It has a bridge from a Bluesboy, but the electronics setup of a deluxe. The seller didn't know much about the guitar.

Looks like an ASAT Bluesboy semi-hollow, to my eyes. The Bluesboy usually has the ASAT Classic bridge pickup with a neck humbucker (various makes and versions: Seymour Duncan, G&L). This one appears gilded with options: neck binding, body binding.
As for the seller: who knows? Many people don't know much about a guitar they have, or it may have belonged to a family member... just speculating.

On Jos' yowhatsshakin.com, there's at least one similar guitar with a solid top and rear-mounted controls: http://yowhatsshakin.com/yowhatsshakin/ ... maple.html

It doesn't have the normal bluesboy control bar and pickup selector.

That is correct. There wasn't (and still not) a Reverse Mounted Control option for BTO models. Also, I notice that the body is either a Flame Maple body or that the front AND back have Flame Maple caps. Usually the body wood for Semi-Hollow models would be Swamp Ash or Mahogany. I suggest you contact Memo via repairs@bbesound.com and ask him to look up the SN to get the full specs and any details about this build: could be an employee built guitar or a prototype.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks. I just sent the email to Memo. Is that a person's name?
Is he usually responsive?

Memo Romero is the Service Manager of G&L. I always got a correct response from him sooner or later.
