You've probably heard by now that Quincy Jones passed away a few weeks ago.
Quincy Jones was a musician, a songwriter, a producer and conductor. An arranger a record label owner a film producer and a magazine publisher - as well as an humanitarian.
A lot of us have heard his work but didn't know it was his work. Most people will remember his association with Michael Jackson on the Thriller Album, but the man has been around producing and conducting when big bands were the rave, and kept in the loop through seven decades (he died at 91).
Few people have had such a colorful and illustrious career in the music industry. In particular I admire his collaborative endeavors, arrangements and ... versatility? The guy had the kind of talent shines brightest through the people he worked with - making them sound colossal.
Here is one of his arrangements from the movie, the Color Purple. If you watch it, be mindful of everything that had to come together to make this scene as big as it is, and sound a great as it does. I love the Jazzy start to this..
