Lunch Report - September 30, 2024

Lunch today was chicken and rice soup from the home kitchen, along with a slice of blueberry pie to celebrate the passing of summer here in the Rockies.
The leaves are turning, temps are in the 50s at night - the scent of pumpkin spice is in the air.

My G&L pedal collection is complete as I now have the entire spectrum of their stompboxes. All two of them.



I've been out of town for a while so I'm only now able to experiment with these. Anyone know what the Buckshot drive was patterned after?
Once I have a chance, I'll crack the case and trace the circuit to see if it's a screamer, a rat or some other OD.
I love my BBEs. I'm assuming these are simply BBE pedal variants with a G&L paint job. Maybe an experiment that was more trouble than it's worth?

Was fortunate enough to catch one of my guitar heroes live in Cheyenne on Saturday night.
Jimmie Vaughan is back on the road after a bout with throat cancer.
You'd never have known it from the amazing show he put on at the Lincoln theater for about 500 of us.







Always the gentleman, he was full of stories, laughs and soulful Texas blues. He had the Tilt-a-Whirl band with him and the Texas Horns - trumpet, alto and baritone sax. After a full set from his solo work, one or two T-birds numbers and DFW from the album he and Stevie did together, he came back out for an encore that was close to an hour long. Especially moving was his solo rendition of 'Six Strings Down', the song he wrote after Stevie passed.

Don't miss one of the last remaining giants if he tours in your area.

Leftover roast lamb for lunch with gravy and vegetables. British wife so typical Sunday dinner leftovers.

BBE pedals, LOVE 'EM My son has my Soul Vibe but you can see I have old and new versions. Of these pictured I use the newer Sonic Stomp, Old Boosta Grande and Newer Green Screamer on a regular basis. For the others I have many "usual suspects" as option like Carbon Copy, Keeley Compressor, Rat and other trem, chorus or distortion options but the BBE's all hold their own. The 427 is a great distortion if yer looking for something better than a DS-1. No clue about Buckshot origin but it is a cool overdrive. Wonder what is in the works for next pedal?



Lucky you to see Jimmie Vaughn. Will definitely try and catch him.

I'm kind of a minimalist when it comes to pedals. The only BBE pedal I have is the notorious Ben Wah (hijacked by Vertex pedals more than 10 years ago but that's another story) which supposedly has a class A 1967 analog circuitry, a "halo inductor", and I think it has true bypass when off. It has an Eq "Q" pot on the R side for tweaking. I picked it up maybe 5 years ago cause my old '80's crybaby would adversely affect my tone when off. This one does not seem to do that. I don't use it very often, but it does the job. here's a pic...



I love the blues and attend several blues festivals per year. Jimmy Vaughn is a great tasteful blues guitarist, and of course, was a major influence on his younger brother SRV. I've seen his vid's but I don't think I've seen him live yet. My big discovery blues guitarist this year was Joanne Shaw Taylor, caught her set at Briggs Farm Blues Fest in July, and she was absolutely on fire. What a great song writer/vocalist/lead guitarist! I had not heard of her prior to that. She kicked a$$. I've since checked out some of her more recent recordings and they are worth the listen.

I saw this post last week, and sat down three times at work to participate in the conversation, but was pulled away each time, and unable to finish the response.

So today I'll just keep it short. I am having some beef broth, and Whey Protein.

I haven't tried any BBE pedals, though I've heard some good things about them. I tend to play a very simple rig - no more than five pedals on the board at any one time - a muff, an overdrive, a compressor, a noise gate and a wah. Sometimes I swap in a chorus or a delay. More often than not, I play entirely clean - leaving the grit to my amp. I can get away with it, so I do.

I would love to see Jimmy V live. Haven't had the opportunity yet. Apparently he came to a blues festival in my hometown some ten years ago, but it couldn't have been advertised very well, because I didn't hear about it until a few years ago. I would definitely have gone. Perhaps I'll get an opportunity to see him some day. If he comes to town, or is close enough for a road trip, I'll definitely make the effort.

The quality of the video sucks a bit - but this was actually a great little jam on the Carson Show.

Lunch today is cottage cheese and blueberries. Eating light today as I anticipate a celebratory dinner at the Tax Man Brewery on the way home after I pick up my ASAT Classic from Guitarworks in Greenwood. The ASAT Classic is the last of my G&Ls to be treated to a pro setup by master luthier Deric Rush. The playability of all of them went from nice to oh how sweet!

Dan, I was fortunate to see Jimmy V with the Fabulous Thunderbirds when they opened for SRV. Stevie was pretty wacked and tired but he and Jimmy did a wonderful duet playing the same guitar at the end of the show. I saw Jimmy again some years later when he and his own band headlined a Blues Festival in Aptos, CA. When you see him live you can really appreciate what a talented player he is.

I've seen a couple of videos where SRV is playing a double-neck and Jimmy comes and plays the top neck while Stevie plays the bottom. But I know I saw a video with both of them playing their own guitars, with Jimmy fretting Stevie's guitar, and Stevie fretting Jimmy's guitar. I KNOW I've seen it, but I can't seem to pull the right combination of search terms to make it come up. I hope it is still out there, it was epic.
