Climax Plus - A few questions

Post by TexasJack »

Hi Folks,

I'm on the hunt for an HH configuration G&L and have come across the Climax below (okay, it's an HSH) and have a few questions.

Some observations...

1. There is the base for a black locking nut, missing the top locking plates. These guitars were sold with Floyd's so a black lock nut seems to make sense, but...

2. There is a chrome DFV in place - it looks original, meaning I don't see evidence that a Floyd Rose was there and replaced with the DFV.

3. Also looks like someone swapped an SD 'bucker in the bridge for the original Gotoh - or did they ship these with SDs?

I've read what I can find here and on JVS's site. GG, curiously, has no Climax's in his collection. (maybe I should take a hint?)

My questions
Maybe it was originally sold with the DFV and someone added the locking nut later?
Would G&L sell a chromed bridge with a black nut? (I know they'll sell you whatever you want, but was this standard?)

Thanks,
TJ

Here are the three Climax model wiring diagrams in our Gallery:

Here is the 1994 G&L Price List in our Gallery:

Hope this helps.

The DFV bridge on there is the aftermarket DFV bridge [Catalog number BV 100] listed in the G&L Dealers Price List.
The latest Price List with a listing of this aftermarket bridge we have in our Gallery is the July 1, 1990 one.
You can tell by the shape of the bridge plate, which is concaved at the top and is stamped with "G&L Custom". Here is a photo of an early (1982) aftermarket DFV:

If it was built at the factory as a production model they would use a standard DFV bridge. Here is a photo of the standard DFV bridge:

Perhaps it might be an employee built guitar and they choose to use the aftermarket DFV bridge.

We do have two Climax Plus with DFV bridges (one does have the aftermarket DFV bridge) listed in the G&L Registry, see:
https://www.guitarsbyleo.com/AUTOREG/in ... nter_fmt=1.

You might contact Memo and ask him to lookup the Serial Number to get the history and specs on this guitar. His contact email is repairs@bbesound.com.

Hope this helps.
