1/2 way through my latest project. Was about to buy a CLF Research ASAT Classic Alnico but since I was in the middle of close copy figured I would wait until I see a G&L ASAT Classic S Alnico Launch Edition for sale.
So, with all the wonderful options on the G&L online shop I grabbed a set of the CLF Research ASAT Classic Alnico Pickup Set and a CLF-100 Alnico Single-Coil Middle, here are the pieces of the puzzle. I went with the white cover for the middle for a different look and to match the white guard, the old pups are on the floor above guitar.
Played a G&L ASAT Classic S Alnico a couple of days before got this back from the shop and I can say these CLF pickups are SWEET!! Played the G&L ASAT Classic S Alnico at a shop through a Deluxe Reverb and my project through my Deluxe Reverb, but my DR is tweaked some. Compared with my standard 62 re-issue, these CLF pups have more clarity. The 62-reissue may be a little higher on the treble end but that is easily adjusted on the tone knobs if that is what I'm after.
But you say it doesn't have the magic of the expander switch. Well, from my favorite project source, G&L online shop, an expander switch is on its way to me as I type! Will give update when switch arrives and installed.
If you are thinking of any pickup change, these CLF Research ASAT Classic Alnico's are a WINNER!

That is one handsome looking project guitar. Good call going with a white cover for the middle. It blends in really well. Play it in good health and I look forward to future updates.

Thanks guys, it's been fun hearing the different tones from these pickups in this guitar. Paul, the more I've looked at it the white cover fits the color scheme to me as well. John, thanks it's a 1992 Japan model. Funny story how it came about - had a 1985 sunburst MIJ 62 re-issue I traded for Baja Tele (WTH!?!), soon realized I did not like the big neck and worked a trade for this guitar that had three pups.
Selector switch scheduled to arrive today but won't be able to make change for a week or so. Did a quick comparison to a Jerry Donahue neck pickup last night and the CLF is surprisingly close in tone. Only did clean option, will spend more time experimenting with clean and overdriven set ups to compare. I really like the Jerry Donahue neck pickup so that could be why I'm drawn to the CLF neck pup. More updates to come.
