Hey All. Not a lot of content on the old G&L page lately. Thought I'd post a Lunch report to give y'all something to land on.
LUNCH: My lunch today is a laughable packet of Ramen along with some whey protein powder dissolved (more or less) in a half a cup of water. It isn't the Taj Mahal of lunches by any stretch, but it'll do for today. I Keep some Ramen in my desk for days when I skip out of the house and forget to bring a lunch. The protein powder is just something had around, so I've decided that'll be my make shift "get me by" for the lunch hour. I hope the rest of you are enjoying some fairer fare.
Topic, the first: If you won a raffle where the prize was your choice of either an ASAT or a Legacy/S-500 Which would you choose and why? (Of course this is essentially the G&L equivalent of "which is your preference, Tele or Strat?").
My answer is going to be similar to most I suppose. My first guitar was a Gibson Les Paul. I was a big Led Zep fan, and was young enough to buy a GLP because that is what I saw Jimmy Page playing in a few photos. I ended up selling it around the time I found Stevie Ray Vaughan, and bought myself a Fender Strat plus, for more or less the same reason.
In the decades that followed, even though I still greatly admired various players, I became more interested in the guitars themselves - how did they sound? how did they play? What did I like about this on over that one, etc. About ten years ago I more or less decided that I like the teles more than strats. Don't get me wrong, I love both, but I have enough guitars now that I am able to notice that I prefer playing my ASAT to playing (say) my Comanche. I had a Legacy that I liked, but the neck and I didn't really get along and I traded it for something I was interested in at the time.
In recent years however, I find that I like the ASAT Special, more than my other ASATs and certainly more than my strat style guitars. I think it has a lot to do with the playability, the tone, and (as I age) the weight. (my special is semi Hollow). In a pinch, it is the tone that I like the most, but I have to admit, it plays itself, and feels so good in my hands. Every other guitar I have or play, has to measure up against it, and some come close, but not can match it.
In the scenario above - you may be led to believe I would choose the ASAT, but since I already have a fan-freaking-tastic ASAT Special (and a pretty great ASAT Classic), and since I had a Legacy before, I'd go for the S-500 to see how those MFDs sound and feel on a strat style guitar.
Topic, the second: Local Availability of G&L guitars.
I live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The only place I can buy a G&L here is on Craig's list or (a local favourite) Kijiji.ca. I might see 5 or 6 used G&L guitars come up in the course of a year in Winnipeg. When they do come up, it is anyone's guess what condition they'll be in, and whether or not they would tickle my fancy. There is a store in Montreal (redone music) that does some online sales (I bought my LB2 bass online from them) , and another store in Alberta (from whom I bought my blonde ASAT classic online). By and large though, purchasing a G&L guitar is a bit of a hassle up here. Every time I travel in the US, I am on the hunt for a sweet find. Haven't travelled enough to get lucky.
What it look like in your area? Any stores carrying G&Ls where you live?
Topic, the Last: I don't know how your day is going, but give this a listen - it'll be the best seven and a half minutes you spend today:

Re: Lunch report Thursday June 13 2024
hey dan, pbj for me today, hangin with the Mrs. and the grandkids,
it would have to be another asat. got the legacy/s500 thing covered with the comanche.
which asat, not sure. currently have a special and a classic S. maybe one with a mahogany body, semi-hollow, large coil mfd at neck, alnico pup with classic box steel bridge, strings thru body. yup
Atomic music in Baltimore has G&L's pretty regularly. It's an hour trip but worth the occasional jaunt.
thx for the dose of stevie ray! he always leaves me wondrin' how the f*%$ did he do that?

Re: Lunch report Thursday June 13 2024
Quiche for breakfast - skipped lunch as usual
I would go for an ASAT Special because I don't have a G&L with a saddle lock bridge.
The nearest G&L dealer to me is an hour away in Indianapolis. Guitarworks. First visit was a few weeks ago when I took my new legacy in for a pro set up by Deric Rush. Wish I had found this store years ago. Bought my new G&Ls ( except the legacy)through Sweetwater in Ft. Wayne which is three hours away but I am up there visiting family now and again. Used G&Ls purchased via Craig's List and Guitar shows.
Thanks for the SRV. Great way to start my day!

Re: Lunch report Thursday June 13 2024
Lunch was peanut butter toast.
Raffle wise I'd opt for Asat. Just prefer the body style I suppose. Have the Skyhawk in my avatar plus a good Strat. Plenty of Asat options I'd like to get.
Local availability is bad- once in a blue moon something will show up on CL. Detroit is about 4.5 hours away and I don't believe there's much there either- one authorized dealer???
Gotta love SRV.
Here's a random vid I enjoyed the other day

Hey Dan appreciate the LR!
Late to lunch but no lunch last two days after back from vacation.
Raffle winner would be an ASAT variety. Would get a custom build with Z-Coils and big MFD. I recall an online guitar configurator where you could build any G&L build and see what it would look like. Man I wish that was still around.
Local availability for G&L - There is a shop about 5 mile from my house but will not get $0.01 of mine. Will not go into details, but have been to a few of the shops on G&L Premier Dealer list that I have visited. I have shopped at Reverb and Ebay dealers.
SRV always good, and funny he's on your mind while Satch has been in my rotation last few days! Rock on
