S-500 USA and Bare knuckle pickups

Post by Joseph Joestar »

Hi!

I've got a G&L S-500 USA and I love it. I like the MFD pickups, but I ask you if you think that a replacement with Bare Knuckle Cobra pickups would be a sort of improvement or not.

My question is only because of GAS.

It depends upon your tone goals and playing style. I'd learn all the ins and outs of the MFD's including the adjustable pole pieces under each string before you swap them out. Welcome, Joseph!

Just an opinion, but what makes an S-500 an S-500 is the MFD pickups, and replacing them wouldn't sound "better". Really, the definition of "better" is whatever you like. Since you have GAS I would suggest getting a good playing used Mexican or other Strat and do pickup experiments with that. Personally I like Jason Lollar's pickups, but that's just my preference. I've used Lindy Fralin with excellent results too. Remember to pay attention to quality and values of pots and capacitors as well.
