G&L Noobie has questions???

Post by Astein2006 »

Hi All. New to G&L here. Well sort of new. I had an ASAT Special back in 1987. Had no idea what I had and foolishly traded it away a few years later. Anyway. Coming back to G&L after all these years. I have a few questions about the new stuff that I can't find the answers for on the site. Well that I haven't found yet.

Are you able to order a Nitro finish? I didn't see anything listed about that
I'm looking to buy a Solamente wanted to know if anyone prefers the MFD or the Alnico for the bridge position?

Thanks everyone

My understanding is nitro is only available on special series runs such as the relic series or special run nitro series. Normal special orders to my knowledge limited to the current finishes found on G&L website.

I have not personally played an ASAT Classic Alnico, but have checked out demos. Personally, I think they both sound great. In my opinion Paul Gagon has done a wonderful job voicing the alnico pickups. I've seen plenty of A/B demos of the ASAT Classic (w/ MFD) vs Fender Telecasters and have found I always preferred the ASAT. I have an ASAT Classic S with the MFDs and enjoy it quite a bit. My vote would be for the MFD, but if you want a more traditional Tele tone the alnico is closer.

Overall I like all the MFD pickups (big single coils in the Special the best). I love the wide frequency range - tone and volume controls are quite useful with the MFDs. No reason to leave them both wide open. High output so you can roll back the volume for the same output of an alnico and have a quieter guitar. They have great clean tones, and are very dynamic responding well to the string attack (something I need to work on!). They work great with distortion and other affects.

Not sure this helps... Maybe the real answer is get both!

Cheers, Dan
